I am going to church with my girlfriend on friday. She goes to a roman catholic church, and I have no idea what te sermon is going to be like! Can you give me some tips on what I might expect so I dont make a fool out of myself?
The sermon (homily) is up to the individual priest this is the easiest part just sit and listen. As for the litergy. Just follow what everyone eles does and following allow with the missle for some responces. Just to give you a heads up there will be many that you don't know because it's not written anywhere. But for a heads up there will be
an opening song/prayers {stand}
reading/responce from Psalms(sung)/ reading {sit}
Gospel {stand}
homily/sermon {sit}
Prayers of the faithful {stand}
offertory {sit}
prayers {stand}
after holy holy is sung {kneel}
after great Amen (usually sung) {stand}
Our Father/ sign of peace {standing} say peace be with you shake hands of people around you
Sing Lamb of God then {kneel}
remain kneeling Catholic will then go up to recieve the Eucharist
Theologically, Catholics hold that Communion is the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus in the form of bread and wine. According to St Paul, anyone who receives of the cup unworthily is sinning. If you allow people who do not believe to recieve, then you are allowing some to recieve unworthily. Also, to recieve communion, you show yourself to be a member of the Church. It is a sacrament of Initiation, has it has the effect of binding us together symbolically and spiritually. To receive when you are not a part is to show a unity that sadly does not exist, but should be worked towards.
Non-Theologically, to ask the Church to open the sacrament to those who do not agree with her is to ask her to violate God's commands. We are to be a people set apart. It is a sacrament given to us by Jesus and man has no right to alter the rules.
Remain kneeling
general rule when the priests sits you sit or when others around you sit you sit
Final Blessing/ Song {stand}
I hope you enjoy your visit to the Catholic Church! : )

In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost
(Matt 28:19; cf. John 14:13-14; Acts 2:21)
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sin, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
Lev 5:5; Neh 1:5-9; Dan 9:3-19; James 5:16)
Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
(Matt 6:9-13; cf. Luke 11:2-4; Mark 14:36; Gal 4:6)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. (Luke 2:14; cf. Rev 4:11; 5:11-14)
O my Jesus, forgive us of our sins. Save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls into heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. (Luke 1:28)
Blessed art thou among women (Luke 1:41-42a,Luke 1:48),
Blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus (Luke 1:42b)
Holy Mary, Mother of God (Luke 1:43)
Pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen (Luke 2:35, John 2:3-5)

Indeed. I mean, NONE of what the Catholics pray is Scriptural...except for all the stuff you mentioned, of course. Wait...all that stuff is the basis of the Rosary, isn't it? ;)
Edit: I'm sorry, I misread your question. I thought it said, "Why don't Catholics pray the Gospel?" Oops...I'm not awake yet, despite the fact I've been awake for three hours.
It's just amazing to me that many Protestants don't think the Rosary is Scriptural, when in fact, it's ALL Scriptural, though it wasn't called the Rosary until later.
Exodus 20:8-11—
8 Remember The Sabbath Day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
10 But the Seventh Day is the Sabbath of Yahweh your Heavenly Father. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your wife, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor the stranger who dwells within your gates.
11 For in six days Yahweh made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them; and rested the Seventh Day. Therefore, Yahweh blessed the Sabbath Day, and hallowed it; Yahweh made the Sabbath Day holy.
It seems to me that Yahweh's command to keep the seventh day holy is as plain as it can get. The definition of Saturday, from Webster's Complete Unabridged Dictionary, Second Edition, 1979, Simon and Schuster, New York, NY, tells us that Saturday is the seventh day.
Sat/~ur.day n. [AS. Sæterdæg, or Sæternes-dæg, Sætern, from L. Saturnus, Saturn.] the seventh or last day of the week; the day of the Jewish Sabbath.
However, the definition of the word Sunday shows that it is the first day of the week.
Sun/day, n. [AS. sunnon dæg, day of the sun; used as transl. of L.L. dies solis, day of the sun.] the first day of the week; it is observed as the Sabbath by most Christian denominations.

PAPAL POWER ACKNOWLEDGES THIS ACT
What power has claimed authority to change God's law?
The Papacy.
NOTE__"The Pope is of so great authority and power that he can modify, explain, or interpret even divine laws...The Pope can modify divine law, since his power is not of man, but of God; and he acts as vicegerent of God upon earth." Translated from Lucius Ferraris, Prompta Bibliotheca (Ready Library), "Papa,'' art. 2.
What part of the law of God has the Papacy thought to change?
The fourth commandment.
NOTE: They [the Catholics] allege the change of the Sabbath into the Lord's day, contrary, as it seemeth to the Decalogue; and they have no example more in their mouths than the change of the Sabbath. They will needs have the Church's power to be very great, because it hath dispensed with a precept of the Decalogue. The Augsburg Confession (Lutheran). Part 2. art. 7, in Philip Schaff, The Creeds of Christendom (Harper), Vol. 3, pg. 64.
"It [the Roman Catholic Church] reversed the Fourth Commandment by doing away with the Sabbath of God's word, and instituting Sunday as a holiday." N. Summerbell, History of the Christian Church (1873), pg. 415.
Why did God command Israel to hallow the Sabbath?
"For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it" Exodus 20:11.
NOTE: As the Sabbath was given that man might keep God in mind as Creator, it can be readily seen that a power endeavoring to exalt itself above God could do this in no other way so effectually as by setting aside God's memorial, the seventh-day Sabbath. To this work of the Papacy Daniel had reference when he said, "And he shall ... think to change times and laws." Daniel 7:25.
Does the Papacy acknowledge changing the Sabbath?
It does.
NOTE: The Catechismus Romanus was commanded by the Council of Trent and published by the Vatican Press by order of Pope Pius V, in 1566. This catechism for priests says: "It pleased the church of God, that the religious celebration of the Sabbath day should be transferred to `the Lord's day'." Catechism of the Council of Trent (Donovan's translation, 1867), part 3, chap. 4, pg. 345. The same, in a slightly different wording, is in the McHugh and Callan translation (1937 ed), pg. 402.
Question: How prove you that the Church hath power to command feasts and holy days?
Answer: By the very act of changing the Sabbath into Sunday, which Protestants allow of; and therefore they fondly contradict themselves, by keeping Sunday strictly, and breaking most other feasts commanded by the same Church." HENRY TUBERVILLE, An Abridgment of the Christian Doctrine (1833 approbation), pg. 58. (Same statement in Manual of Christian Doctrine, ed. by Daniel Ferris [1916 ed.], pg. 67.)
Question: Have you any other way of proving that the Church has power to institute festivals of precept?
Answer: Had she not such power, she could not have done that in which all modern religionists agree with her; she could not have substituted the observance of Sunday the first day of the week, for the observance of Saturday the seventh day, a change for which there is no Scriptural authority. STEPHEN KEENAN A Doctrinal Catechism (3d ed.): pg. 174.
The Catholic Church by virtue of her divine mission changed the day from Saturday to Sunday. The Catholic Mirror official organ of Cardinal Gibbons, Sept. 23, 1893.
"1. Is Saturday the 7th day according

Lets keep it simple.
Your question: Why are these preacher lying about the Keepin Sunday instead of Saturday, the Sabbath?
The answer: For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; (1st Titus 4:3)
Every one tries to observe all ten commandments and God said that if you love me, keep all of my commandments. The fourth commandment that God asked of us is to "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work. But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God : in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the Lord made the heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh : wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it" (Found in Exodus 20 : 8-11). Since we are God's children, we have to follow God's law and try to follow what God does. Since God himself rested on the seventh day, then we must as well. Even Jesus observed the sabbath. In Luke 4 : 16 it says " And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read". In Ezekiel 20 : 20 it says "And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the Lord your God". So how did people actually start worship on Sunday ?
You observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday. (Reference : Peter Geiermann, C.S.S.R., The Converts Catechism of Catholic Doctrine (1957), p. 50.)
"Regarding the change from the observance of the Jewish Sabbath to the Christian Sunday, I wish to draw your attention to the facts:
"1) That Protestants, who accept the Bible as the only rule of faith and religion, should by all means go back to the observance of the Sabbath. The fact that they do not, but on the contrary observe the Sunday, stultifies them in the eyes of every thinking man.
"2) We Catholics do not accept the Bible as the only rule of faith. Besides the Bible we have the living Church, the authority of the Church, as a rule to guide us. We say, this Church, instituted by Christ to teach and guide man through life, has the right to change the ceremonial laws of the Old Testament and hence, we accept her change of the Sabbath to Sunday. We frankly say, yes, the Church made this change, made this law, as she made many other laws, for instance, the Friday abstinence, the unmarried priesthood, the laws concerning mixed marriages, the regulation of Catholic marriages and a thousand other laws.
"It is always somewhat laughable, to see the Protestant churches, in pulpit and legislation, demand the observance of Sunday, of which there is nothing in their Bible." (Reference : Peter R. Kraemer, Catholic Church Extension Society (1975),Chicago, Illinois. )
May I add that these are written by devoted Catholics that proclaimed the truth.
Last but not least, in Mark 16 : 9 it reads " Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devil"
Now if the Sunday worshippers worship on Sunday because that's the day Jesus risen from the dead, then Sunday is the first day of the week, and Saturday must be the seventh, so the sabbath is on the seventh day. If you are a Sunday worshiper, I pray that you take this into consideration and that you don't follow the majority of the world (that worship on Sunday) but you follow Christ. If you have any comments or concerns, please mail me back. May God bless you, and spread the word. Now what do you think?
Misty could you please provide biblical evidence as to changing the Sabbath after Jesus died because that's the first time I ever heard of that?
The Sabbath day is the seventh day of the week, Saturday.
The observance to remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy was part of the Law of Moses, the Old Testament.
In the New Testament, there is no command to observe the Sabbath. Instead, Christians in the New Testament met upon "the first day of the week". (Acts 20:7, 1 Cor. 16:1-2)
In fact, the Old Law was nailed to the cross with Christ. (Colossians 2:14) This being the case, the New Testament states, "Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to... a Sabbath.." (Colossians 2:16)
Remember the Sabbath is part of the Old Testament. We can learn a lot from a study of the Old Testament, but for instructions on how to worship and serve God we now need to look to the New Testament.
In Galatians 5, some were trying to bind an Old Testament command on New Testament Christians. Verse 3 says if they bound this one item, they were "debtor to keep the whole Law"!
If we bind one command because it is in the Old testament, we must keep it all (animal sacrifices, feasts, yearly trips to Jerusalem, etc.)! "For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all." (James 2:10)
If we try to Justify ourselves by the Law of Moses, then we have fallen from grace! (Gal. 5:4)
The New Testament now gives the instructions for our worship. The examples in the New Testament show Sunday worship.
Sunday, however, is never called the Sabbath in the Bible, but we are not under the Law that commanded the Sabbath.
Jehovah's Witnesses am I accurate about religious government heads and Jesus kingdom by Jehovah in heaven?

Obama and pope link changed but still about them yet. JW's note any points there made needing noticed!
Ezekiel 39:7 "And my holy name I shall make known in the midst of my people Israel, and I shall no more let my holy name be profaned; and the nations will have to know that I am Jehovah, the Holy One in Israel.’" And the nations will have to know that I am Jehovah, is that talking about fleshly or spiritual Israel today? Fleshly Israel is not using Jehovah's name today so it could only be a spiritual Israel. And fleshly Israel is killing and fighting wars just like all other nations around the world so not an example to follow or believe Jehovah would be backing them. Jehovah's Witnesses are a nation of people but not a nation in one place. So when Daniel 2:44 takes place Jehovah's people will be left to fix things these governments today have no power to fix aright. They do not want to call on his name Jehovah for help so they have no hope of really fixing anything aright in a lasting way! So how soon will it be before they ALL have to know him by his great hallowed name Jehovah? SOON!
Debbie22 said to answer, "Government has committed fornication with the Catholic Church for decades. The government is likened to a wild beast.....and the church to a harlot riding atop the beast...making it do her bidding....but soon the beast will turn on this harlot and devour her.....Politics is through with letting religion rule it....it will destroy all religion soon....Our only hope is to be worshipers of Jehovah God because he is the true God and will be able and willing to save us through Armageddon." Debbie is talking about Revelation and she is right! If you want life ask Jehovah's Witnesses what Revelation says about our day and government and religion! Your free will choice to ask! No force, we came to your door to give you that personal choice. We will not mix in government business to make laws forcing you to hear what we have to say. Your religions do that and that is not the way Christ said to do things and you know that, do you not? If you know anything about the Bible!
Poto Said "Get a grip and grow up.
Jehovah's Witnesses don't "force" anything on anyone. We come around to share with you the Bible's hope for the future. If you want to listen, great....if you don't, we move [on] and try to find someone else who does want to listen.
Nobody's forced into anything."
Just like I Divine Truth said too here, "Your free will choice to ask! No force, we came to your door to give you that personal choice. We will not mix in government business to make laws forcing you to hear what we have to say. Your religions [clergy] do that [Not JW's] and that is not the way Christ said to do things and you know that, do you not? If you know anything about the Bible!" So Poto and I are saying the same thing just different wording. Any religion mixing in government business is bad business Revelation shows and the U.N. and those who back it will cooperate and stop that bad business soon! The conflict between government and religion is starting to be noticed by all!
Fadex said, "You can't force people to believe. It's a presonal choice." That is true and that is why about 7,000,000 JW's earth wide make a personal choice to loving go out and talk with others about Jehovah's Kingdom message because the clergy will not or teach their followers to do such a loving caring deed for others! They like having people just come to their churches and pay a fee to preach them out of hell into heaven. Which their idea of heaven and hell are Pagan not Christian teachings. So the people get nothing for their paid fee. Sounds like on Y/A the clergy still preach that because all those that conflict with us JW's out there want to lovingly send us there. They will not lovingly come to our door and peacefully for free teach us how to be more loving. Only thing we keep hearing is come worship our three headed Jesus are he will cook you forever in hell. The Bible Jehovah God and his Son Jesus Christ does not think like your Pagan form of Jesus thinks! Your FREE CHOICE!
Get a grip and grow up.
Jehovah's Witnesses don't "force" anything on anyone. We come around to share with you the Bible's hope for the future. If you want to listen, great....if you don't, we move and try to find someone else who does want to listen.

10 Very Strange British Traditions - Listverse

The Egremont Crab Fair – one of England’s weirder events – gets its name from crab apples rather than the marine variety. It started back in the 13th century when the Lord of the Manor gave away crab apples to the populace. In fact, to this day, the Parade of the Apple Cart, where apples are thrown into the crowds on the Main Street, is part of the fair. There are a host of other non-mechanized, traditional events – greasy pole climbing, a pipe smoking contests, a talent show, Cumberland wrestling, a hounds trail. But lets face it, the reason Egremont makes the news every year is the gurning competition. Home of the Gurning World Championships.
Gurning, involves a rubber-faced skill that is totally bizarre and unique to this part of England. Contestants put their heads through horse collar or braffin while they create the ugliest, most grotesque faces they can manage. A certain amount of skill is involved but a lot of beer and a certain amount of toothlessness probably has an impact as well. Celebrities occasionally have a go and the national news usually features the winning gurners. If you are in Cumbria visiting the Lake District, nearby, in September, stop in at the Egremont Crab Fair. You won’t see anything like this anywhere else and you won’t soon forget it.
