Is there and age requirement for Bishops? (Catholic Church)?

How old should a person be to become a Bishop of the Catholic Church? If there is no age requirement, then who is the youngest Bishop?

Around 40 is the youngest I think don't know the exact age limit but there is one in canon law. He has to be at least 35.

CHAPTER II.

BISHOPS

Art. 1.

BISHOPS IN GENERAL

Can. 375 §1. Bishops, who by divine institution succeed to the place of the Apostles through the Holy Spirit who has been given to them, are constituted pastors in the Church, so that they are teachers of doctrine, priests of sacred worship, and ministers of governance.

§2. Through episcopal consecration itself, bishops receive with the function of sanctifying also the functions of teaching and governing; by their nature, however, these can only be exercised in hierarchical communion with the head and members of the college.

Can. 376 Bishops to whom the care of some diocese is entrusted are called diocesan; others are called titular.

Can. 377 §1. The Supreme Pontiff freely appoints bishops or confirms those legitimately elected.

§2. At least every three years, bishops of an ecclesiastical province or, where circumstances suggest it, of a conference of bishops, are in common counsel and in secret to compose a list of presbyters, even including members of institutes of consecrated life, who are more suitable for the episcopate. They are to send it to the Apostolic See, without prejudice to the right of each bishop individually to make known to the Apostolic See the names of presbyters whom he considers worthy of and suited to the episcopal function.

§3. Unless it is legitimately established otherwise, whenever a diocesan or coadjutor bishop must be appointed, as regards what is called the ternus to be proposed to the Apostolic See, the pontifical legate is to seek individually and to communicate to the Apostolic See together with his own opinion the suggestions of the metropolitan and suffragans of the province to which the diocese to be provided for belongs or with which it is joined in some grouping, and the suggestions of the president of the conference of bishops. The pontifical legate, moreover, is to hear some members of the college of consultors and cathedral chapter and, if he judges it expedient, is also to seek individually and in secret the opinion of others from both the secular and non-secular clergy and from laity outstanding in wisdom.

§4. Unless other provision has been legitimately made, a diocesan bishop who judges that an auxiliary should be given to his diocese is to propose to the Apostolic See a list of at least three presbyters more suitable for this office.

§5. In the future, no rights and privileges of election, nomination, presentation, or designation of bishops are granted to civil authorities.

Can. 378 §1. In regard to the suitability of a candidate for the episcopacy, it is required that he is:

1/ outstanding in solid faith, good morals, piety, zeal for souls, wisdom, prudence, and human virtues, and endowed with other qualities which make him suitable to fulfill the office in question;

2/ of good reputation;

3/ at least thirty-Five years old;

4/ ordained to the presbyterate for at least Five years;

5/ in possession of a doctorate or at least a licentiate in sacred scripture, theology, or canon law from an institute of higher studies approved by the Apostolic See, or at least truly expert in the same disciplines.

§2. The definitive judgment concerning the suitability of the one to be promoted pertains to the Apostolic See.

Can. 379 Unless he is prevented by a legitimate impediment, whoever has been promoted to the episcopacy must receive episcopal consecration within three months from the receipt of the apostolic letter and before he takes possession of his office.

Can. 380 Before he takes canonical possession of his office, the one promoted is to make the profession of faith and take the oath of fidelity to the Apostolic See according to the formula approved by the Apostolic See.

Three Anglican Bishops move to Catholic Church

January 7, 2011. A simple ceremony in London#39;s Westminster Cathedral is enough to welcome the first three Anglican bishops who have turned to ...

Who were the first bishops of the Catholic Church?

1) Who made them bishops?
2) When were they made them bishops?
3) Where were they made bishops?
4) Why were they made bishops?
5) How were they made bishops?

1- the 11 apostles
2- St. Peter wass made the first prior to Jesus's crucifixtion. Jesus said you are peter and upon this rock I shall build my chuch, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven whatever you lose on earth shalll be lossed in heaven ie who's sins you forgive are forgiven who's sins you retain are retained -- these are the words of ordiantion and we still use them). Next Jesus said I give you the keys to the kingdom thus making St. peter not just the first bishop but the first pope. That is he gave him the keys to his kingdom on earth -- the catholic church. He did not give him the keys to his kingdom in heaven, because the father has those. Jesus new he was to be killed so he had to hand the rins to somebody. We have documented the doctrine of pterian primacy throughout the new testament. St Peter is always first to the point of after Jesus was crucified and St. John rus to the tomb he stands and waits before going in until St. peter arrives and he lets St. peter go in first.
The remaining 10 were ordiained when Jesus had risen. He came back and said the words who's sins you forgive are forgiven who's sins you retian are retined. These are the words of ordination or holy orders that we still use today.
3- you can lookk that up.
4- This is the story of the new testament. Jesus picks his bishops, trains them and then ordains them. Jeus scame to establish his kingdom on earth -- the cahtolic church. That is what the newt esstment is the story of the ofudnaiton and ealry formation of the kingdom of god/heaven on earth -- teh cahtolic church. Jeus came as we rememebr in the parable of the vineyard and the tenants The tenats -- the jews -- were not getting it. Teh father sent prophets who they paid no attention to, then he ent his son whom they killed. Jeuss in the parable said what would the owner do -- the ownere being god the father, well he would give the vineyrad to others -- in reality Jeuss did this he established his kingdom the vineyard and opened it to all who believe and do.
5- I covered that with the words of ordiantion that the church still uses.

What's the order of the Bishops for the Roman Catholic Church?

My Catholic friend does not even know! Like is the archbishop "higher" up than the bishop?

In pure theological terms, all bishops are equal.

In terms of authority over various areas of the Church, Cardinals are bishops who closely advise and assist the pope.

Archbishops preside over large dioceses, and typically supervise the work of a number of other bishops under them.

Is it true that the bishops of the Catholic Church can trace their line of succession to the twelve apostles?

Is it true that the bishops of the Catholic Church can trace their line of succession to the twelve apostles? If not, where does the line of succession trace to?

It is true. In fact, when I went to Saint Peter's basilica in Rome a few years ago, there was a lineage carved in stone (in a side room as I recall) that traced the Bishop of Rome's line (in other words the Pope's succession) from John Paul II, all the way back to the Apostle Peter. The line is unbroken to this day.

Why do Protestants not believe that the Twelve Apostles were the first bishops of the Catholic Church?

Christ gave the power to teach, to sanctify, and to rule the members of His Church to the Apostles, the first bishops of the Church.

St. Peter was the first Head. After a miraculous escape from prison in Jerusalem, he founded his See in Antioch; here the followers of Christ were first called Christians. Peter made frequent missionary journeys through Judea, Samaria, Galilee, Asia Minor, and probably even Greece. He finally fixed his See at Rome.

St. Peter presided at the Council of the Apostles in Jerusalem in the year 50 A. D. At the same time that St. Paul was beheaded, St. Peter was crucified head downwards, on Vatican Hill, Rome, 67 A. D.

St. John, the Beloved Disciple, lived at Ephesus and governed the Church in Asia Minor.

In the time of Trajan he was thrown into a caldron of boiling oil, but was miraculously preserved. Later he was banished to Patmos, where he had the revelations which we call the Apocalypse. He died at the age of about 100 years, the last of the Apostles, and the only one who did not die a martyr's death. He left his Gospel and Epistles.

St. James the Greater, St. John's brother, labored in Judea, and according to tradition, travelled as far as Spain.

He was the first of the Apostles to be martyred being beheaded in Jerusalem in the year 44, by Herod Agrippa.

St. Matthew preached among the Ethiopians, Persians, and Parthians, and was martyred in Parthia. He wrote the first of the four Gospels.

St. James the Less was Bishop of Jerusalem. He was cast down from the pinnacle of the Temple in 63 A. D. He left one Epistle.

St. Andrew, St. Peter's brother, preached along the lower Danube, and was crucified in Greece.

St. Thomas preached in Persia, Medea, and went as far as India. He was martyred in India, pierced with a lance at the command of the king.

St. Philip preached in Phrygia and Scythia, and was crucified at Hieropolis.

St. Bartholomew preached in India, Arabia,.and Assyria. He was flayed and crucified in Armenia.

St. Simon preached in North Africa, and was martyred in Persia.

St. Jude preached in Syria, and was martyred in Persia. He wrote the "Catholic Epistle".

St. Matthias, chosen to take the place of Judas, preached in Ethiopia, and was martyred in Sebastopolis.

St. Paul was converted miraculously (Acts 9) in the year 34. He of all the Apostles labored the most abundantly. He wrote many Epistles.

He is called the Apostle of the Gentiles, because he carried the Gospel to the pagan world. He travelled extensively and successively to Seleucia, Cyprus, Asia Minor, Phrygia, Galatia, Macedonia, Thessalonica, Athens, Corinth, Miletus, and finally Rome. From Rome he went to Spain and the East, then returned to Rome, where he was martyred in 67 A. D.

Christ intended that this power should be exercised also by their successors, the bishops of the Church.

The Apostles first preached in Judea on the very first Christian Pentecost. Then they dispersed throughout the different countries of the then known world. Everywhere they preached, baptized, and ruled the Christian communities. They were the first bishops of the Church.

"As the Father has sent me, I also send you" (John 20:21).

The Apostles chose men to assist them, imparting to them greater or less powers. Before leaving a place, they chose a successor with full powers (Acts 14:22).

Those who received only a small part of the powers of the Apostles were called deacons. Those given greater power were the priests. Those appointed successors to rule in the place of the Apostles were the bishops.

Christ had given the Apostles full powers to choose successors, when He gave them the powers His Father had given Him (John 20:21)

It was His wish that the Apostles should have successors to continue the Church, which He said would last till the end of the world (Matt. 28:20). Without successors to the Apostles, the Church would have no rulers, and being unorganized would never have lasted.

If they admitted that, then they woould have to conclude that Jesus started the catholic Church and would have to become Catholic

  • Bishop: #39;Church failed abuse victims#39; | World | News | Ottawa Sun

VATICAN CITY — At a solemn Good Friday service, Pope Benedict XVI’s personal preacher said allegations that the pontiff covered up sex abuse cases by Catholic clergymen reminded him of the “more shameful aspects of anti-Semitism.”

Within hours, a Vatican spokesman sought to distance the pope from his preacher’s remarks after both Jews and a leading abuse victims group reacted sharply, criticizing the comparison with violence that culminated in the Holocaust to the accusations made against Benedict.

The Vatican has been on the defensive in recent days, saying the church has been singled out and collectively stereotyped for the problem of pedophilia, which it says is a society-wide issue.

Good Friday is a particularly delicate day in a decades-long effort by Jews and Catholics to overcome a legacy of mistrust. Particularly harmful to the relations was the long-held Catholic belief that Jews were collectively responsible for executing Christ. A landmark achievement of the Second Vatican Council of the 1960s was a declaration stating the Jews should not be blamed for the crucifixion.

As Roman Catholics around the world commemorated Good Friday, the head of Germany’s Catholic bishops issued a statement denouncing past failures and mistakes in the church’s handling of abuse cases.

Archbishop Robert Zollitsch of Freiburg said members of the clergy have neglected to help abuse victims by a “wrongly intended desire to protect the church’s reputation.”

Zollitsch condemned “the appalling crimes of sexual abuse” and urged the German Catholic church to face its painful record on the handling these cases.

The Catholic church in Germany, Pope Benedict’s homeland, has been rocked by a widening abuse scandal in recent weeks.

Hundreds of cases of alleged harsh physical punishment in Catholic institutions and cases of alleged sexual abuse — most of them dating back years if not decades — have been publicized.
