Excerpts from quot; The Catechism of the Catholic Churchquot; on what the Church teaches on the topic of abortion. Public Domain Song is quot ...
The Catechism of the Catholic Church states in article 2272: “Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life.” Generally agreed-upon examples of “formal cooperation” might include the individual who had the abortion, and the doctor who performed it. There’s debate, however, about whether more indirect roles should be included. For example, last year an auxiliary bishop in Austria caused a stir by suggesting that a businessman who rents space to an abortion clinic is guilty of “formal cooperation.” More commonly, there’s debate about whether politicians who vote not to restrict abortion, or to widen its legality, are guilty of “formal cooperation.
Hollow77 - the Catholic Church does not teach that all sin is equal. They consider abortion to be the "killing of the innocent" - a mortal sin.
A politician who supports abortion is in direct cooperation with the abortion. Abortion being allowed without criminal penalties is a policy made by politicians. If that politician supports abortion ,then he or she should withdraw from the church. And if not, be thrown out. If the church has the spiritual guts to do just that.

Some Catholics claim that the “Catechism of the Catholic Church Article 6 On Moral Conscience” permit them to take exception to the Catholic Church official stand on the abortion and Papacy apostolic exhortation disapproving abortion.
Do you believe you can invoke Article 6 of Catechism to support abortion?
Article 6 of Catholic Catechism states that man has the right to act in conscience and in freedom so as personally to make moral decisions. He must not be forced to act contrary to his conscience. Nor must he be prevented from acting according to his conscience, especially in religious matters.
Catholics might with equal reason invoke Article 6 of the Catechism to support any number of things expressly forbidden by God, and these Catholics would be sadly mistaken in doing so.
The article in its entirety must be read for a full understanding of the Church's teaching on conscience.
The first portion of the article discusses the respect and autonomy that is to be accorded to the individual conscience, on the one hand . . .
. . . . and the second part of the article discusses the fact that an individual conscience is not infallible. People can make mistakes in judgement in matters of conscience, and they are culpable for any harm that may ensue from such mistakes.
The most egregious of these mistakes, if unchecked by lawful authority, may trample upon the fundamental human rights and dignity of innocent third parties.
A civilized society must balance the right of the autonomy of individual conscience against society's duty to protect the vulnerable.
Contrary to recent propaganda by supporters of abortion, the Catholic Church has from time immemorial reiterated that a direct assault upon the unborn infant in the womb constitutes a sin of homicide, one of the "Sins that Cry out to Heaven for Vengeance". (Others include "oppressing the poor" and "defrauding the laborer of his wages.")
No appeal to freedom of conscience can justify the commission of such sins, and no civilized society stands by and allows the innocent to be harmed in these ways.
It is to inflate the authority of conscience far beyond all reason to propose that the an appeal to the free exercise of conscience would trump the right of innocent persons to be protected from willful murder and other similar serious transgressions against their human rights, or that it should trump the obligation of a civilized society to protect the rights of the most vulnerable.
My children, age 17 and 19, are disagreeing on these 2 issues. We have searched the Catechism and cannot find the appropriate reference.
This discussion was prompted by the protest at Notre Dame. Why were only Pro-Life Abortion activists there and not those opposing the death penalty?
In other words, does the Catholic Church see these 2 things equally wrong??
In theory? No difference.
In practice? Nobody said Squat when GW Bush spoke at Notre Dame and he presided over more executions than any other Governor.
2271 Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law:
You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish.75
God, the Lord of life, has entrusted to men the noble mission of safeguarding life, and men must carry it out in a manner worthy of themselves. Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes.76
Then the footnotes for 76 refer to: GS 51 # 3
I don't think this is a bible passage, so what is it referring to?
GS refers to the Gaudium et spres. All abbreviations are found in the index of your Catechism.
Does Nancy Pelosi believe she is the spokeswoman for the Catholic ...

Nancy “I’m trying to save the planet” Pelosi is just another far left, radical socialist and that’s what she is the spokeswoman for. That is, except when it comes to her money, then all bets are off. I mean, does anyone really take her seriously? What a choice in San Fran;Pelosi or Cindy Sheehan. I’d rather be shot in the face than have to make that choice.

The Catholic Church has ALWAYS said that life begins at conception.
There is NO doubt on that.
The fact that Obama says that knowing when life begins is “above his pay grade” is a sad reminder of how inexperienced he is!
...Nancy Pelosi Continues To Scandalize On Abortion
“I talked to the Catholic bishops about this… There is no federal funding of abortion in this bill. …This bill that passed the Senate does not have federal funding of abortion”. Catholic Speaker Of The House Nancy Pelosi lying, again, about the abortion provisions firmly ensconced in the senate “healthcare reform” bill. Though lying directly to the may be taking it up a notch, misleading people over abortion is nothing new for Ms Speaker.
Actually, the only time “practicing Catholic” Pelosi, as she always seem to refer to herself when speaking publicly about abortion, even mentions the Catholic Church, is when she is blatantly distorting the Church’s Catechism on abortion in order to mislead and corrupt others.
