Why is child molestation so common in the Catholic church?

On a per-capita basis, there are more molestations in the Catholic church than any other church.

Why is this? Is it because the priests cant get married and have to force themselves upon defenseless kids?

It is easy to get away with it when the hierarchy supports or defends what you are doing.

Possible Solution to the Catholic Church molestation thing...? Agree or disagree??

Castration. Why not? Aren't catholic priests not allowed to get married anyways?

Agree or disagree? Why?
Of course I havent thought this out very well, I was just asking what you guys thought.

Castration doesnt seem so bad. People mutilate themselves everyday in all walks of life. There has to be consequences though for the priests who DO touch little boys inappropriately and of a sexual nature. Not just getting suspended. I'm not Catholic but aren't priests bound to a code of ethics or morality that does not permit any sort of sexual misconduct?

Michael Jackson should be castrated, just for the hell of it.

Pastor Billy says: so what do you have planned for all the Protestant Pastors who together have a higher rate of molestation cases not sure if their wives would agree to castration. This is a serious reply to your question fact is the rates of abuse among Protestants is actually higher and of course the rate of abuse amongst the general populus is higher even more.

I think your solution isn't a solution or you haven't been exposed to more raw data on the topic to really understand the demographics. For example I would bet you aren't even aware that out of the total number of child abuse cases in America today the majority involve abuse by women and not men. Don't see any women priests in the Catholic Church do you?

see article for government source below:

The National Child Abuse and Neglect Data Systems was developed by the Children’s Bureau of the U.S. Department of Human Services in partnership with the States to collect annual statistics on child maltreatment from State child protective services agencies. For the year 2001, it was found that approximately 903,000 children were victims of child maltreatment, 10 percent of whom (or 90,000) were sexually abused. It also found that 59 percent of the perpetrators of child abuse or neglect were women and 41 percent were men.[i]

why wasn't the Pope investigated in the Catholic Church molestation inquiries?

Why won't you people listen, how many times do i have to tell you? Priests make a lot of money for the church. Children are expendable. The Catholic Church is all about the money.
Where have you been living?

What does it mean when the institution of the catholic church sanctioned child molestation for decades?

And don't tell me it was a few bad apples. It was an institution across continents, sanctioned by the church heirarchy. The cases, law suits, the thousands of victims, the convictions, prove this history.

Sanctioned? No, but "Condemned". Some actions of Bishops here in the US have not been the greatest, but for most of the preists that have been accused of this crime, have been dealt with according to the law.

As a Catholic, there is no excuse for a priest that forsakes his vow of celibacy and attacks children.

That being said, it is not only Catholic priests that have been accused of molesting Children.

"We would be naive and dishonest were we to say this is a Roman Catholic problem and has nothing to do with us because we have married and female priests in our church. Sin and abusive behavior know no ecclesical or other boundaries." Rt. Rev. William Persell, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago, Good Friday Sermon, 2002.

According to some statistics(not knowing what years these statistics cover), there have also been the following accused of molesting children.

ALL Protestant denominations - 838 Ministers
147 Baptist Ministers
251 "Bible" Church Ministers (fundamentalist/evangelical)
140 Anglican/Episcopalian Ministers
38 Lutheran Ministers
46 Methodist Ministers
19 Presbyterian Ministers
197 various Church Ministers

One of the most extreme cases of clergy sex abuse in U.S. history involved a Pentecostal minister named Tony Leyva, who molested several hundred boys in the 1980s. But few Americans have heard of Leyva, while some molesters who are former Catholic priests have become household names.

Lets not leave out...

Teachers
Policemen
Firemen
Etc., Etc., Etc.

Child molesters come in all forms and places, not just the Catholic Church.

On Sept. 1, 5th Judicial Circuit Court judge Randall R. Jackson overruled a motion to dismiss a civil sex abuse lawsuit against Huffman Memorial United Methodist Church in St. Joseph. It is also against the Pony Express District of the United Methodist Church in St. Joseph and the Columbia's Missouri Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, both of which are overseeing Methodist bodies. "This ruling is significant because it is the first time a Missouri court has held that a negligence case could be pursued against a church for sexual abuse," said Ken Chackes, the plaintiff's attorney, who has handled about 100 cases involving alleged sexual abuse involving the clergy. In earlier lawsuits, victims had to prove that the church knew the abuser was going to harm children and failed to...

A letter circulating the Catholic churches of America's armpit — signed by "bishops from Newark, Metuchen, Trenton, Paterson and Camden" ‐ warns parishioners that gay fmilies are going to eat their children. Or something as ridiculous.

"As citizens, Catholics also have the right and responsibility to oppose laws and policies that unjustly target people as bigots or that subject them to charges of unlawful discrimination," reads the letter in part , "simply because they believe and teach that marriage is the union of man and a woman. … As Catholics, we must not stand by in silence in the face of the many challenges that threaten marriage and, in turn, children and the public good."
