I would like to play with the church orchestra but it is a Catholic church. I am not religious but love music?
DSC_8496

Can I play with the Catholic music group at the Mass if I am not Catholic? The requirement is a good musical ability Grade 6 or better and if you enjoy the music at Mass. A friends mum said they were looking for musicians you see but | am not religious and have never been to a church service. I love to play my Clarinet and Saxophone.

It seems like an acceptable venue to play your instrument if you are interested in joining their orchestra, and they are willing to have you. I've found that as long as you don't disrespect their faith while in the church, most Catholics I know are pretty easy going about having non-believers participate with them.

I would caution you to not participate in communion during Mass if you are not a follower. That can be considered rude and insensitive.

I hope this helps.

How did the Roman catholic Church influence music in the middle ages?
DSC_8475

Wannabe Hit it Head on additionally,

The Roman Catholic Church was the primary patron second only to royalty for the arts in the middle ages. Some of the world’s greatest composers Bach, Mozart etc, created musical masterpieces for the church. The Church also promoted the construction of great pipe organs. Not to mention the Gregorian chants named after Pope Gregory the Great.

Catholic, do you think this music is OK in the church?
DSC_2995

I am catholic, but i have been to many churches that play this music in the worship service. Do you think that people get emotional in worship because of the loud music. What are your thoughts on this? I really like this kind of music, but this maybe the reason the youth groups are leaving the Catholic church. Because, they visit another, and discover that it is much more entertaining to worship with a rock band playing. I personal do not see nothing wrong with this, but maybe this is something the church should think about in keeping the youth. Do you think that the true presence of God is disrupted, or is it increased by helping those open up completely.

Wow...where to begin?

1. "Getting emotional" has NOTHING to do with worship. I mean, you can get emotional during worship if you are compelled to, but you can still worship without getting emotional. You know, worship God intelligently, for example.

2. The kind of music you like or dislike as NOTHING to do with worship. You don't have to enjoy the music to engage in worship.

3. If youth are leaving the Catholic Church, it has less to do with the kind of music that's being played and more to do with an abject lack of education about who Christ is and why He deserves their attention. The priests have a role in educating the youth, but it is the PARENTS who have primary responsibility for instilling faith in their own children. They do this by example more than anything. If parents don't take their faith seriously, they can't expect their children to take the faith seriously.

4. The presence of God cannot be disrupted by ANY human endeavor. Do you think He is some sort of puppet that we control? Ridiculous! God makes Himself present where He wishes to make Himself present, regardless of the kind of music that is being played.

5. Music does NOT help people open up to God. They either open up to Him or not. There is no point in blaming or crediting a certain kind of music.

6. WORSHIP IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE ENTERTAINING YOU or anybody other than God. Apparently, you have been under the misconception that worship and maybe even the entire Mass is all about YOU, you likes and your opinions. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, W-R-O-N-G. Worship is an action that is directed to GOD. You're supposed to be forgetting about yourself and focusing on JESUS. Who cares if you like the rhythm? Who cares if you hate organ music? Who cares if you're tired because you stayed up too late? Who cares if you have an itch? For one hour, one measly, stinking little hour of your week, you're supposed to train your eyes and your heart on JESUS. Is that hard to do? Well, yeah, in a society that's taught you to only care about yourself and your own comfort and how entertained you are. But it's possible to figure it out and actually engage in Christ-centered worship. Give it a try, won't you?

Can you only have religious music in a Catholic Church wedding?
DSC_8024

We're getting married in a Catholic Church and are hiring a guitartist to play but I just heard somewhere that he can only play religious music. Does anyone know if this is true because I was hoping to choose a song that I know and have him perform it as I walk down... :|

Mostly.

You parish should provide you with guidelines for your music selections.

  • Msgr. Bartolucci: “The bCatholic Church/b has renounced itself and b.../b

Today the fashion in the churches is for pop-inspired songs and the strumming of guitars, but the fault lies above all with the pseudo-intellectuals who have engineered this degeneration of the liturgy, and thus of music , overthrowing and despising the heritage of the past with the idea of obtaining who knows what advantage for the people. If the art of music does not return to its greatness, rather than representing an accommodation or a byproduct, there is no sense in asking about its function in the Church.

Music is Art with a capital “A.” Sculpture has marble, and architecture has the edifice. You see music only with the eyes of the spirit; it enters within you. And the Church has the merit of having cultivated it in its...

Speaking as someone who is a youth minister and who has a youth mass for his parish, I agree that especially for the youth, there needs to be a greater appreciation for Chant and Sacred Music, and not just praise and worship music. If we are trying to form "Lifelong Disciples" and not just "High School Disciples" then the recovery of the full tradition of the Church's liturgical practice needs to occur particularly in youth group settings.
