Why didn't the Catholic Church keep records of the children of the apostles?
PRIMATE PONTIFICATE canvas

As in, when the Catholic Church came together, they were putting the history of the Church together. Why didn't any of them record the lines of Jesus "cousins" or the lines of Peter? Or the lines of any apostles?

Why leave that part of the History out?
joe b, are you Christian?
doesnt matter when they came together, why didnt they record the children is the question. ^_^

For almost 300 years those people and their descendants and relatives did play a leading role in the church but that all changed In the year 318AD when the Bishop of Rome, Sylvester, with the backing of the the Emperor Constantine and the might of the Roman Empire, broke with tradition and appointed Greek Bishops to run the historic original Apostolic churches of Jerusalem, Antioch, Ephesus and Alexandria AND he made Rome the "Mother Church" whom all the others had to follow.

Prior to this Christians of Jewish origin (and often relatives of Jesus) headed those important churches in the East and Bishops of Gentile origin headed the Churches in the West.

The Church in Jerusalem was the original Mother Church to whom all the other churches looked to for guidance and it was church tradition that the Bishop of Jerusalem was to be a relative of Jesus. For example, James the brother of Jesus was the first Bishop of Jerusalem and all the other Apostles and Bishops always sought James's advice on church and spiritual matters.

When James was martyred, Jesus' cousin Symeon was appointed Bishop of Jerusalem and head of the Mother Church and we he was martyred one of Judas' sons was elected Bishop (not Judas Iscariot, but Jesus Brother who was also called Judas) and so on until 300 years later Constantine and Sylvester broke this tradition.

It would seem that other Uncles, brothers, cousins and nephews of Jesus also held various positions in the Jewish branches of the church in the Holy land.

There is a record of a delegation of these relatives of Jesus visiting Sylvester and trying to reason with him and get him to
change his mind about appointing Rome the New Mother church and also to get him to cancel the appointment of Greek Bishops in the East and follow the Apostolic tradition of having relatives of Jesus lead the churches there.

But as Rome had conquered all these countries and ran their governments, Sylvester could see no reason why Rome shouldn't also run the Church as well and Constantine was keen to have a single universal religion that the whole Empire could follow, so Constantine backed Sylvester up and the true heirs to the Eastern Churches were sent packing and disappeared into history, Some think they went into hiding for fear that the Roman Catholic church would hunt them down and kill them just as the she had done to other Christians that refused to bow down to her. Eventualy after 2 - 3 generations of hiding their identiy the relatives of Jesus, Joseph, Mary etc lost all knowledge of who they were.

Question about Catholic Church baptism records?
Copacetic Comics, Polish Hill

On all the baptism records I've seen, the mothers are listed by their maiden names (eg; Parents: John Smith and Mary Jones). So I'm wondering... does the same apply to the sponsors' names? If the female sponsor is Anna Brown, is Brown her maiden name or married name?

Brown is her married name, if married. Parents were tracked by birth name because that's how priests tracked you from birth to death to ensure they could keep of each person in the sacramental registers. If you married 4 times, you were still tracked by birth name so that the priest knew you were a Catholic in good standing...i.e. neither bigamist nor adulteress, let alone excommunicated heathen.

They weren't as meticulous with sponsors.

how to contact the catholic church for family records?

I was told to contact the Roman Catholic church to possibly be able to get information about my family... ie birth-death certificates, marriage license and sooo forth. but how do i go about this and where do i go to find away to contact the church... im looki´ng for a church in caserta italy, help :)

Get as much info on your family in America before you jump back to Italy. Now, the Mormons at their FHCs have a lot of records they have obtained from Italy. The Church allowed then in for a year to get information from what I heard at FHC several years ago.

For instance if someone was baptized in Italy and confirmed or married in the U.S., the church where they were confirmed will have the name of the parish where they were baptized in their confirmation records. So getting as much information in the U.S. first can be helpful.

I know in our Diocese the baptismal, first communion, confirmation, marriage and death registers are periodically sent to the Diocesan Chancery to be microfilmed. Now, if you request this information from a church or Diocese you need to send them some type of stipend for their efforts. It would be very costly for them to be providing info to people who want the info for genealogy purposes. But truthfully Catholic records can be a great source of information.

I know here when a child is confirmed he holds a little card in his hand and a priest walks with the Bishop as he confirms each. The priest takes the little card from the confirmand and reads off the confirmation name to the Bishop. On the other side of that little card is all the baptismal information. The parish uses that to post their confirmation records and then they go to their baptismal records and note in it that that child was confirmed in their parish on such and such date. If he was baptized in another parish, that little card is mailed to the parish of baptism for them to note in their baptismal register that the child was confirmed in such and such parish on such and such date.

Websites like Legal Detective can be a come on. Some people keep giving links to them as a source and I wonder if they are not in the pocket of Legal Detective. I have found websites like this will tell you they will search for free. Then when they find a name they will tell you they have persons you are interested in but ask for payment. Once you pay you find that the names are not the same people at all.

  • Piety, Inc. » Church resisting records release

The Roman Catholic Church is balking at the release of Indian residential schools documents that name individual church members, insisting its concern is purely about respecting Canada’s privacy laws and not an attempt to cover up new allegations of abuse.

But the research director for Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission says the denominations involved in residential schools are being unco-operative, and suggests the Catholic church in particular fears more abuse stories will come out against living members.

Featured website - Decca records singing nun search - CathNews

The Decca music label has embarked upon a global, multi-media search for religious sisters, to record an album of plainsong and chant in preparation for the Pope's historic visit to the UK in September.

Adverts have started appearing internationally to encourage nuns to send inexamples of their singing. "This is a genuine appeal to find what you could call a 'sister act' for the 21st century," an executive said.

This site contains details and information about the unusual talent search.
