Catholic Church and Protestant Reformation?

Can anyone bring to light what was really wrong with the catholic church at the time to cause such a huge separation (birth of the "protestant") during the Reformation? Thanks.

The Catholic church to begin with was massively corrupt. One of their abuses was a system called indulgences in which, in exchange for donations of money for church building projects, the pope would give the wealthy a statment forgving their sins and reducing their time in purgatory. In addition many church offices were literally for sale to the highest bidder. Anyone with a lot of money could buy themselves or family members a position as a bishop or a cardinal. The popes themselves were frequently corrupt, many of them had mistresses and illegitimate children as well as spending massive amounts of money on their own personal indulgences. There were many other reasons for the reformation which is too complext to answer here.

Reformation led to the revival of a strong belief of the teachings of the Bible which had been trampled by the catholic papacy. The fire of reformation was never put off by the catholic heresy and false pretences as the reformers dug deep into the Bible to unravel the hidden truths, and indeed they did. This truth set Europe and the rest of the world free although by rivers of blood. Reformation started in 1517 in Europe. In early 16th century, Reformation was the ever greatest Christian movement that was started by Martin Luther to restore biblical teachings that have been trampled down by the Roman Empire and papacy. One of the causes of this reformation was indulgences which were not defined by Bible. Another cause of the protestant reformation was the killings of the earlier reformers like John Huss, Wycliffe and many others by the Roman Catholic or papacy. Moreover, the cause of the reformation was because Roman Catholic was no longer using and standing by the Bible principles. They were corrupt and they even acquired wealth through bloody hands. Learned men had discovered the truth and they were agitated to reform the church. Prophetically this was the right time to start the reformation. The most important cause of reformation was to oppose the conduct and papacy’s claims of pardoning sins of people. They claimed to be the intermediaries between God and mankind therefore the pope had powers to forgive sins. People killed others and they went to pope to be forgiven after giving him some money, an open defiance to the Bible’s teachings which they confessed that it was their guide. They also believed in purgatory, in that if a person dies a sinner pope or priests will be given gifts to pray for him so that his soul goes to heaven and he will never go to hell. These were false teachings and beliefs which justified reformation to take place. The reformers referred every teaching to the Holy Bible. This period of time was referred to as dark ages which many definitions but this is the time when the truth had been banished in Europe. It is not that dark denotes little or unknown, but during this period the state and the church were united and the Roman emperors were rulers in their various kingdoms. Kings who were under the Romans got decrees from the Roman emperors. Through these excessive powers the truth of the bible was subverted. The earlier reformers who wanted to reform the church and return the Bible teachings were butchered mercilessly. The dark ages got its definition from these atrocities that met the true preachers of the truth, those who were opposed to papacy. There were untold and horrible massacres of reformists everywhere in Europe.

Christianity and Art During the Protestant Reformation

In 1517, Martin Luther nailed his ninety-five theses to the door at Wittenberg Castle. A new professor at an insignificant German university, Luther requested an academic symposium on suspect practices of the Catholic Church, chiefly, the sale of indulgences as authorized by Pope Leo X in 1514.

The resulting movement, later called the Protestant Reformation, emphasized the power of the individual to interpret the Bible – an avante garde idea with the seeds of Renaissance humanism simultaneously taking root. Christianity’s greatest revolution overhauled the entire structure of the faith – including its relationship to the arts.

    The Protestant Reformers

The Protestant Reformation, although generally attributed to Martin Luther, was actually the combined work of several Reformers. In Germany, Martin Luther sought to reform the Catholic Church from within. In Zurich, Huldrych Zwingli called for a return to the simpler times of the New Testament, and purity of the Bible’s teachings.
