catholic church wedding music

We're getting married in a Catholic Church and are hiring a guitartist to play but I just heard somewhere that he can only play religious music. Does anyone know if this is true because I was hoping to choose a song that I know and have him perform it as I walk down... :|

Are there any good sites that could help us in choosing the music and maybe listen?

if you are going to have a mass then the music director will meet with you or you should schedule an appointment but for my wedding:
bridal party walking down aisle
bride walking down aisle
unity candle
bringing up gifts (wine/communion)

I am wondering if there are restrictions on what music you play. I am getting married in Lady Chapel in Maynooth in Co.Kildare. Any advice would be great
No it's nothing horrible, it's a sweet lil song, it has lovely words, but it's not religious music, like Ave Maria, which alota weddings play.

If the parish had strict policies, they would have already told you. There are official suggested guidelines from the church, but if you decide on something else you would like, nobody's going to say nay. They won't stop you walking down the aisle because they don't like your choice.

I am getting married an a catholic church and was just wondering if anyone knew what type of music is allowed to be played. I would really love to be able to walk down the isle to the 'canon in D' played by pachelbel, but i don't know if that is allowed to be played in the church..?

Pachelbel is definatly allowed in any church since it's classical. Thats what i'm having at my Catholic wedding.

The church should explain to you everything that is allowed and not allowed in a Catholic wedding ceremony. We were told by our priest that the only music permitted is classical or religious pieces, and it has to be a live musician because apparently recordings aren't considered sacred enough for church (which i thought was stupid). However, rules could differ among parishes so check with yours and see what they say.

I have heard Trumpet voluntary, Jesu Joy of Mans Desiring, Canon in D, and Here comes the bride. But those tunes besides Jesu Joy of Mans desiring arent really sacred. So can you use other classic pieces not common with weddings. ex.(pomp and circumstance, Four seasons from vivaldi, the planets from Gustav Holtz) or some piece of music you or a friend wrote, or orchestral background music from a wedding (Ex. Harrys Wonderful World, from Harry Potter, Happy Ending from the Little Mermaid)

As far as I know, and I was a church musician for many years and sang at lots of weddings, you can have anything played at your wedding you wish as long as it is respectful (and, of course, wordless). Certain other songs are allowed during the ceremony, but only hymns are allowed during the mass itself. Ask your music director at your church or your church organist for more suggestions or information.
