The Melkite, or Greek Catholic, Church in the Holy Land

The Melkite, or Greek Catholic Church, is a church of Byzantine tradition in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church.

My sister in-law was married in both Catholic and Greek Orthodox Church. Only a month apart Which is valid?
St. Vladimir and St. Olga

She wanted two weddings and after the Catholic Church told her they would not marry her, she lied to them. She told them that she would not be getting married in the Greek Orthodox Church after all. Then did it anyway after she got her wedding in the Catholic Church. Her Catholic wedding was in the United States and the Greek Orthodox was in Australia. My husband her brother has a real problem with her decision to lie to the Catholic Church, I think he should just leave it alone.

I would say the first church they got married in is the valid one. Last time I check lying to a church is a big sin...she must not be that religious and according to their rules she is going to hell for lying/

What main points differentiate the (Greek) Orthodox Church from the Catholic Church?
St. Nestor the Chronicler

I've realized that the Orthodox church is the denomination of Christianity I know least well, and yet it's so important to history.

The Greek Orthodox is not a denomination. It is a branch of the Catholic Church. The Vatican donates money to it and considers it a sister church. Denominations are divisions within Protestant churches.

Main differences are theological teachings. Same Sacraments. Same purpose. Leadership respects each other and is united in Catholic faith.

Not sure why you consider Greek Orthodox so important to history? It is confined to a small geographic region (indeed, that's why it exists).

What led to the fundamental split of the Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox Church? How did this split influence later history

Roman Catholic Church became secular and heretical to the dismay of the Eastern Orthodox Church.

In 1054, legates of the Pope deposed the bull of Excommunication on the Altar during the Divine Liturgy.

In 1204, Catholic Crusaders sacked Constantinople, weakening the Byzantine Empire and paving the way for conquest by the Ottoman Turks.

In 1964, the bulls of excommunication were recalled but reunion has not been achieved. Probably the AntiChrist will pull this one off down the road.

What are the difference and similairtys between the roman catholic church and the greek orthordox church?
Holy Orders

1. One of the most important differences between the Catholics and Orthodox Greeks is the doctrine that the popes of Rome have absolute authority over all other bishops throughout Christianity and that they are infallible in matters of doctrine. Both dogmas had never existed until the 9th century, when more and more Roman popes were seeking to assert their spiritual authority as the supreme expression of the Faith. Eastern Orthodoxy cannot accept such beliefs because these ideals were never part of the early Church. Early Christian bishops, including Eastern Orthodox ones, have always utilized a consensus of opinions and spiritual authority, usually by council or synod. It is this wider perspective of decision-making that is considered infallible r egarding matters of doctrine and absolute authority.

2. In the 5th century a new doctrine surfaced which was called the Filioque. The Filioque is the name of an additional phrase of the Nicene Creed that says, "and the Son". The Nicene Creed originally said, "I believe.....in the Holy Spirit....who proceeds from the Father." The Filioque makes the Creed say, "I believe....in the Holy Spirit....who proceeds from the Father and the Son." This additional phrase became more and more accepted in the west over the centuries until the 9th-10th centuries when more and more popes began to declare it divinely inspired. This phrase was recognized as creating a false perception of the Trinity, as though there is a hierarchical structure to the Trinity, rather than a perfect Triad. This is why Eastern Orthodoxy cannot accept this new doctrine.

3. The Catholic church also began to believe in another new doctrine, which states that the Virgin Mary was conceived and born without sin. The early Church, including Eastern Orthodoxy, believes that the Virgin Mary was capable of sinning, but she successfully resisted sin her whole life. If she had been created without sin, then this would mean that she was not exactly human, and therefore Christ's Flesh was not exactly human, and so He could not have taken on our whole human flesh in the truest way in order to save the human race.
