An Archbishop is a bishop that serves an Archdiocese (a big or important Diocese)

TCC 3 - The Hierarchy of the Catholic Church

This is just a [very] quick rundown of the institution of the catholic church.

What is the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic church?

I'm not sure how to phrase this question.

I know that there are bishops, cardinals, deacons, and the Pope -- but I'm wondering what the hierarchy is within the church. The... "pecking order," for lack of a better word.

The Church's highest earthly authority in matters of faith, morality and Church governance is the Pope, currently Pope Benedict XVI, who holds supreme authority in the Church in concert with the College of Bishops, of which he is the head. Collectively, these bishops make up the Holy See in Vatican City in Rome.

Let's start from the bottom. One or more priests with the help of deacons (generally religious in training to be priests) hold services at the local parrish churches. Each parrish church belongs to a diocese. In 2008 there were 2,795 Catholic dioceses worldwide headed by a bishop. These dioceses then are group into an archdiocese with a cardinal or archbishop heading the archdiocese.

Said another way, the local priest reports to a bishop, who reports to an archbishop or cardinal, who reports to the Pope.

Godspeed.

Does the Catholic Church hierarchy condone child abuse?

This is truly a sick story: http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/world/53750 29/vatican-defends-brazil-excommunicatio n/

Upshot is a nine-year-old girl in Brazil was raped by her stepfather and wound up pregnant with twins. Her mother arranged for her to have an abortion as she likely would not survive the pregnancy. The church excommunicated the mother and the doctors who performed the abortion, expressing grief for the "two innocent persons" who were "eliminated". Brazil law only allows abortion in cases of rape, incest, and to save the life of the woman (or, in this case, girl). The person responsible for the girl's abuse was not excommunicated because his crime was not as serious, as heinous, as the girl having a life-saving abortion.

This is the same group who have conspired for decades to protect priests who sexually abuse children by moving them from parish to parish.

What on earth is wrong with the Catholic Church that raping a child is not as severe a sin as that child having an abortion to save her life?
Lesbin, of course I don't. But considering the history of the church, and that doctors said the child would not survive the pregnancy, I think we have to go with their opinion, not those of misogynist clerics who know bupkes about medicine.

I heard this story on the news last night, and sadly I wasn't so shocked! The catholic church has done even worse things than this (let's not forget the inquisition). It has nothing to do with God and what he wants, it has nothing to do with Jesus. The church is worse than any mafia! They're only there to manipulate, to frighten, and to control. It makes me sick.

I believe in God with all my heart, but these people have nothing to do with him. And since you asked, it seems like they do have a lot of sympathy for child abusers!

Does the Catholic Church hierarchy condone child abortion?

Show me if there is any example of such cases.
How come more Christians get abortions than non-religious people ...
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index? qid=20080525231120AAD7WLu

No, the Catholic Church does NOT condone abortions. Special dispensations for abortions are given to Catholic women by a Bishop should they be facing a life-or-death situation in continuing a pregnancy.

Ectopic, or "tubal" pregnancies does not require dispensation.

As far as why Christians get more abortions: I don't know why. I know that is true in my personal life as well. I have had more Christian friends have abortions than my atheist friends.

How does the current power structure and hierarchy of the catholic church in any way reflect gods word?

Where in the bible does it even suggest that we should have a quasi-governmental powerhouse dictating God's political policies? How is being one of the richest organizations on the globe reflect the spirit of giving and love that is lauded by the bible? How can we ,as (wo)men ELECT divinity via a pope? How does that catholic church reflect the bible in any way?

I am looking for reason why not statements of agreement.

The current hierarchy of the Church Christ founded is exactly as Christ set it up - priests overseen by bishops, with one bishop holding "the keys to the kingdom", the universal symbol of supreme authority.

The Catholic Church, in Christian giving and love, provides more human services to the needy people of the world than ALL other churches COMBINED. Money isn't the root of evil. LOVE of money is. The Church usues its money to express love of God's people. Do I detect a note of jealousy?

Elect divinity??? The Pope isn't divine. He is a man, a sinner, whom God has chosen to hold authority over His Church. It works. 2,000 years of unity of belief, unity of teaching, unity of worship, just as Christ commanded. Record of religious tradition without such genuine authority - 500 years of disintegration into thousands of conflicting manmade deniminations, in direct opposition to the stated will of God, "that they all may be ONE".

Anyone who knows the history of the Bible should realize that the Bible cannot contain anything contrary to Catholic teaching. The Catholic Church compiled the Bible for its own use. It should go without saying that the Bishops of the Catholic Church, in compiling the 73 divinely inspired books, did not include anything that was contrary to the teaching and practice of their own Church.

    BBC, Apr 2 2010

Pope Benedict’s personal preacher, Rev Cantalamessa, said in a sermon at Good Friday prayers in St Peter’s Basilica, attended by the Pope, that Jews throughout history had been the victims of “collective violence”, and drew a comparison with recent attacks on the Church. He read the congregation part of a letter from a Jewish friend. He quoted from the letter:

Matthews demands accountability of the Catholic hierarchy

Chris Matthews is taking the latest child-abuse scandal in the Catholic church hard. He loves the church, this story shakes him to his unreconstructed core. He gathered his kinsmen, Pat Buchanan and Joan Walsh, on Hardball tonight to talk the scandal over. They were all good, though Buchanan struck a slightly parochial note, saying that this just gives ammunition to the "enemies" of the Catholic church. But Matthews dismissed him. He said, I know that, but so what. What should be done? he kept saying. Then at the end he said, emotionally, the children come first, before any concern for the priesthood. The children had no power here.

It was important for Matthews to account for his church in the eyes of the world. Yes, he gathered Catholics who love the church, and no he didn’t talk about celibacy; but he addressed non-Catholics in his closing remarks.
