A little help with the renaissance catholic church?

We're doing a debate in school, and I've pretty much finished my brief, but I could use a little biblical backup with my case against the Catholics.

This was around the time when the church was led by corrupt popes and priests, and indulgences were sold.

I just need a few quotes, and not the money is the root of all evil one, I already have that.

Wow, what are public schools comeing too? This is also the time when Catholic Humanists are talking about the equality of mankind and denouncing warfare. This is also when the "corrupt" Popes are demanding that the Spanish treat the Native Americans with respect and dignity. This is also the time when Ignatius Loyola and the Jesuits are denouncing anti-Semitism and witchhunts while building universities to promote human intellect and reason. Do a sense a slight anti-Catholic bias in the historical record? Well Pop Culture historical record anyway. If you study this era in college, it is a bit more fare to the Catholics.

Sorry I didn’t really answer your questions. I would argue against you on this one.

ADDITION

I wouldn't argue what indulgences were not sold. I just dont see what was wrong with it. Do Protestant faiths not accept donations? German Princes donated lands and money to Luthers followers. Why is this ok, but bad when Catholics donate to St. Peter's? The bottom line is this, Martin Luther thought the Catholic Church was corrupt and for some reason, High Schools teach history by saying Luther was right. If you would have asked Sir Thomas More he disagreed with Martin Luther. Charles V diagreed with Martin Luther. Henry VIII diasagreed with Luther. Francois I disagreed with Luther.

So why does history teach that Martin Luther was right? Well Protestant England came to agree with him and we in America take our history traditions from Protestant England. If you take upper division History at a university, you learn how inaccurate English historians really were. Just in the last 20 years some major revisions have been made.

How had the Catholic Church become too powerful during the Italian Renaissance?
Facade of the Salvador Church at Cedrillas (Teruel, Spain) / Fachada de la Iglesia del Salvador en Cedrillas (Teruel)

What SPECIFICALLY caused people to be FEARFUL of the Catholic Church during the Italian Renaissance?
Some have offered the Inquisiton. But I can't find a connection between the Inqusition and Italy during the late 1400s and the early 1500s.

The Spanish Inquisition is at the beginning of the time period I'm discussing and the Roman Inqusition begins at the end of the time period I'm focusing on.

I'm focusing on late 1400 early 1500. Most specifically Florence Italy and how the Catholic Church made people fearful.

This is a side trip on other research I've done indepth. I just feel I need to elaborate a little. All references I find merely say "the Catholic Church had become too powerful and people became fearful."

I can't find details.

The Catholic Church became as powerful as it did, because the people were ignorant. They trusted in an entity they thought uncorruptable.

Another reason the Catholic Church became as powerful as they did, is they took away learning, knowledge, and the right to read from the people.

If they people are kept in "The Dark", then they can not know you are lieing to them. Hence, the name "The Dark Ages". The Catholic Church, and the Pope became as powerful as King, that is why the US Constitution has "Seperation of Church and State" in it. The Catholic Church was a major influence over the Kings and Queens back in the Middle Ages, or Dark Ages.

Did growth in opposition to the Catholic Church cause the Renaissance?

Who's up for a second one by taking it farther?

No. The Renaissance was more a product of weather and relative peace in Europe.

The Renaissance, Reformation and the Catholic Church?

How did the Renaissance and the Reformation threaten the Catholic Church?

The Renaissance threatened the Catholic Church because the printing press led to improved education. People started thinking for themselves rather than doing what the local priest told them to do.

The Reformation led to Protestant faiths. King Henry started the Anglican faith. Calvin and Luther started new faiths. Local princes in Germany especially liked this because then they did not have to give ten percent of the taxes to the Catholic Church.

You need to take a look at a monk called Savonarola. He was very right wing and was specific to the city of Florence during the Renaissance. He was feared and also exalted. The Florentines used to give up vanities, such as fine clothes, paintings etc and they were burned in the Bonfire of the Vanities which took place in the Palazzo della Signora. Even Sandro Bottecelli, who painted loads of pagan paintings threw some of his art into the fires and was so afraid of violent retribution that he started painting a lot of religious scenes.(Not that religious paintings were unusual at the time). You could look at the inquisition too. This will give you good grounding.

In short, although this was a time of enlightenment, it was still very dangerous to speak against the teaching of the church. Look at what happened to Galileo and he had the powerful Medici as patrons.

  • BBC News - Outrage at anti-Semitism comparison by Pope preacher

Jewish groups and victims of sex abuse by Catholic priests have condemned the Pope's preacher for comparing criticism of the pontiff to anti-Semitism.

US-based abuse victims' group Snap said the remarks were "morally wrong".

The head of Germany's Central Council of Jews described the Easter sermon as unprecedented "insolence".

The Catholic Church has been rocked by abuse scandals this year. The Vatican said Raniero Cantalamessa's remarks did not represent its official view.

Drawing such parallels could "lead to misunderstandings", Vatican spokesman Rev Federico Lombardi told the Associated Press.

    'Repulsive and offensive'

Fr Cantalamessa's sermon was printed in full on the front page of the Vatican's official newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano.

Many veteran Coin collectors buy expensive coins to shore up the value of their repository.

At present, the art of coin collecting has fascinated millions of people all over the world. Most of the famous museums in the planet showcase collections of rare and valuable coins.
