Like, Michael, the archangel, is the patron saint for soliders because he is known to fight Satan. He is the guard of the Kingdom.
But as for Dymphna, patron saint of people with mental illnesses, I was wondering how the Church comes to the decision of what a saint will help us with? Anyone know? Thanks!
yeah, I know there is a reason but some saints did a lot in their lifetime and I'm wondering how the Church decides on it.
Some saints are recognized as patron saints of certain peoples, places, things, and occupations due to circumstances surrounding their lives.
For example:
People: Saint Peter was a fisherman before he became a fisher of men and is the patron saint of fishermen (and popes).
Place: Saint Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland and is the patron saint of Ireland.
Things: Saint Claire was near death and was unable to attend Mass, she turned in the direction of the Chapel. The wall between her and Chapel vanished and she was able to both view the Mass and participate. For this reason, she is the patroness of TV.
Occupation: Saint Matthew the Apostle was a tax collector and is the patron of accountants, bankers, bookkeepers, and, yes, tax collectors .

Catholic Church rejects Mumbai 'miracle'

A devotee seeks blessings at St Michaels's Church in Mumbai
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MUMBAI (AFP) — The Roman Catholic Church in India's financial capital Mumbai has rejected claims of a miracle, after devotees said a framed image of Jesus Christ began "bleeding" on a holy day.
Crowds of worshippers flocked to Saint Michael's Church in the Mahim district of central Mumbai on June 27 -- the holy day of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour -- after it was thought the depiction had started running blood red.
The Archbishop of Bombay, Cardinal Oswald Gracias, also visited and ordered a scientific analysis of the painting.
But he said in his weekly newsletter released Sunday: "The tests have now been conducted and it has been established that there are no traces of blood in the red rays emanating from the Heart of Jesus in this image of Divine Mercy."
Gracias, who leads some 500,000 Catholics in the Mumbai area, said he was at a loss to explain the phenomenon, but suggested that large crowds that day at the church, plus monsoon humidity, may have contributed.
The Catholic Church can be disappointing . But you would think with all of those witnesses they would call it a miracle.
Should the miraculous fact that he turned white over his short life span be a credit in his favor? He has been exonerated from accusations of child molestation hasn't he? This seems all too common a practice in the Catholic church anyway. Is there anything else the Church should know before he is Canonized Saint Michael the Holy One? I understand it has already been requested he be exempted from the traditional waiting period before canonization. Should the Pope approve?
No the problem is he wasn't Catholic. Missed it by that much.

Famous Historical Churches in Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston is a charming beautiful city with a population in excess of 100,000 people that dates back to the late 1600's and contains a number of famous historical churches. All six of these churches or houses of worship are architecturally and historically significant buildings in Charleston, South Carolina and all five are worthy of a trip by visitors to this classically elegant city along the Atlantic seaboard.
St. Michael's Episcopal Church at Broad and Meeting StreetsSt. Michael's Episcopal Church is located at Broad and Meeting Streets in the heart of Charleston. St. Michael's was built from 1751 to 1761 and is the oldest standing church in Charleston. The steeple at St. Michael's is 186 feet high not including the 7 1/2 foot weather vane that sits atop the steeple. Tuscan columns adorn the front of the church and inside are authentic Tiffany windows and lights dating to 1905. Parts of St. Michael's were imported from England in 1771. Two signers of the United States Constitution, John Rutledge and Charles Pinckney are buried in the church cemetery.
...Church…Dying a Slow Death « Chewing on Life#39;s Gristle
To me the question is what will replace the Church 1.0 release that has been gradually dying out over the recent decades. The growth of the “mega-churches” with multi-thousand members certainly indicates that “church” as a concept isn’t going away and that it can morph into something new.
But I also wonder if the vacuum left by the death of classic churches will open the door to new ecumenical religion(s) — ones that worship something/somebody while preaching acceptance, tolerance, and inclusivity.
