Is it part of the Catholic Church? Who can be invited to join the order? Is this the same Order refered to in the opening of Godfather III?
The Order of Saint Sebastian referred to in Godfather III was as fictional as the rest of the story.
There are various groups calling themselves the "Order of Saint Sebastian" but they are not official orders of the catholic church.

Usually on each side of the altar will be placed The Blessed Virgin and St Joseph....but a Crucifixion of Jesus is in the center of the altar.
Her soul magnifies the Lord (Luke 1:46-55)! Think of what that means for just a moment.
Everything about Our Lady points straight back to the Father, Whose faithful daughter she is; to the Son, Whose mother she is; and to the Holy Ghost Who overshadowed her. There is no one in all of History whose relationship with God is as complex, fulfilled, and achingly beautiful as Mary's. She is not only the greatest of Saints, she is our Mother, as Jesus is our Brother and Savior. In honoring her, we honor Him -- and imitate Him, as we are admonished to both honor our parents and imitate Christ, Who loved His Mother. Our relationship with Mary is that of a child to a blessed Mother who was given to us as Jesus gave her to John at the Cross. She is our spiritual Mother (Revelation 12:17 -- And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ), and she wants to pray for us.
The Hail Mary Prayer
Hail, Mary, Full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death.
St.Paul is probably the best known case of persecution complex. It seems like he could not put pen to paper without reminding the receivers how much he had suffered, how many lashes he received, how long he had been in prison, how many times he had been shipwrecked, how horribly he was tortured... his fingers were probably itching to add how many times he'd been killed.
My question is, did he start a trend?
I see this in the Catholic church's focus on martyrs and martyrdom. If you see a Catholic procession with statuary, most of them show someone being tortured and mutilated in gory detail. Many of their saints are famous practically only for that. St. Sebastian stuck with arrows, St. Lawrence roasted on a spit.. others beheaded, bits cut off, fed to lions, etc.
Even today, here on Y!A, Christians are about the only group where people regularly come online to ask why are they soooo persecuted. There are other groups who might be forgiven for this, such as the Falun Gong in China, but what do Christians have to complain about so much?
What is it with Christians and wanting to portray themselves as persecuted?
Hey, fishy guy with no name. No, I'm not asking you to apologise. I'm merely trying to make sense of the fact that Christians constantly complain of being persecuted even when they're not.
Korban: yes, suffering is something that everyone experiences in life (and everyone tries to avoid, Christian or not). My point is that Christians seem to actually want to show the world that they are suffering, and actually exaggerating things. No offence, but it does remind me of a child with a finger held up in the air with some sticking plaster on it, wanting everyone to notice it.
Well, Christianity IS about pain and suffering.
You become a christian because of the promise they can spare you eternal pain and suffering through the temporary pain and suffering of their founder. In the past, if you would not join, they would cause you pain and suffering. In their quest to identify with their founder, a lot of christian mystics sought out pain and suffering. They even venerate martyrs famous for their pain and suffering.
I think it's just wallowing in the notion - a perverted masochism.
Blllaaahhhhh.
St. Sebastian Pastor: Maureen Dowd and the NY Times: Anti-Catholic ...
I am appalled at Maureen Dowd’s two recent columns. Op-Ed pieces need to be accurate in their presentation of the facts. I suggest that http://www.catholic-sf.org/news_select.php?newsid=&id=57030 and http://catholicanchor.org/wordpress/ be required reading and that appropriate action be taken to redress the factual errors Ms. Dowd has advanced in her recent columns. I have cancelled my subscription to a newspaper that I have read faithfully since 1965. It is clearly no longer the "newspaper of record." Ms. Dowd's piece today was the last straw; I should have done it years ago!
