What is the Leadership Structure of the Catholic and Orthodox Church?

Hey! What is the leadership structure of The Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church? I found out that they were different, but how different? Who has authority? The Catholic Church has the Pope but who does the Orthodox Church have?

The hierarchy of ordained ministers in the Catholic Church mirrors how Jesus and the Apostles set up the original Christian Church.

There are three levels of Holy Orders, Deacon, Priest, and Bishop.

Bishops are the Apostles of today. Each one leads a diocese. Special types of bishop are archbishop, cardinal, and pope (who leads the whole Church).

Priests are co-workers of the bishops and can lead a parish. A special title for a priest is monsignor. Priests are called presbyters in the Bible.

Deacons assist the bishop and priests in the celebration of the Eucharist, in the distribution of Holy Communion, in assisting at and blessing marriages, in the proclamation of the Gospel and preaching, in presiding over funerals, and in dedicating themselves to the various ministries of charity.

+ Saints +

Catholics share the belief in the Communion of Saints with many other Christians, including the Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, Episcopal, and Methodist Churches.

The Communion of Saints is the belief where all saints are intimately related in the Body of Christ, a family. When you die and go to heaven, you do not leave this family.

Everyone in heaven or on their way to heaven are saints, you, me, my deceased grandmother, Mary the mother of Jesus, Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II.

As part of this family, you may ask your family and friends living here on earth to pray for you. Or, you may also ask the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Andrew, or your deceased grandmother living in heaven to pray for you.

Prayer to saints in heaven is simple communication, not worship.

Asking others to pray for you whether your loved ones on Earth or your loved ones in heaven is always optional.

Should the catholic church end and start off on a new structure, say a new name and type of belief?

i don't see the catholic church staying in existence,it is getting sued by the hundreds of millions, schools and high scholls are closing!

lol..you MUST be jesting!
Believe me, the RCC can take care of their financial problems. The Catholic church isn't just a church. The Vatican is its own state. Likewise they have many investments, their own banks..etc..etc..

Why is the structure and authority of the Catholic church necessary?

Because the only safguard against disunity and heresy is an authority with the power to say these are the truths the church stands for, and if you do not accept these you are not a part of us.

You can see what happens without a strong hierarchy if you look at the present schsims within Anglicanism. Some liberal churches are changing their doctrines about homosexuality, whilst conservative ones are sticking with tradition. Both claim to have support from their reading of Scripture, and there is no person with the power to determine which faction is right and which is wrong. Thus the church splits and the true Christian message becomes obscured even further by false teachings.

How does the current power structure and hierarchy of the catholic church in any way reflect gods word?

Where in the bible does it even suggest that we should have a quasi-governmental powerhouse dictating God's political policies? How is being one of the richest organizations on the globe reflect the spirit of giving and love that is lauded by the bible? How can we ,as (wo)men ELECT divinity via a pope? How does that catholic church reflect the bible in any way?

I am looking for reason why not statements of agreement.

The current hierarchy of the Church Christ founded is exactly as Christ set it up - priests overseen by bishops, with one bishop holding "the keys to the kingdom", the universal symbol of supreme authority.

The Catholic Church, in Christian giving and love, provides more human services to the needy people of the world than ALL other churches COMBINED. Money isn't the root of evil. LOVE of money is. The Church usues its money to express love of God's people. Do I detect a note of jealousy?

Elect divinity??? The Pope isn't divine. He is a man, a sinner, whom God has chosen to hold authority over His Church. It works. 2,000 years of unity of belief, unity of teaching, unity of worship, just as Christ commanded. Record of religious tradition without such genuine authority - 500 years of disintegration into thousands of conflicting manmade deniminations, in direct opposition to the stated will of God, "that they all may be ONE".

Anyone who knows the history of the Bible should realize that the Bible cannot contain anything contrary to Catholic teaching. The Catholic Church compiled the Bible for its own use. It should go without saying that the Bishops of the Catholic Church, in compiling the 73 divinely inspired books, did not include anything that was contrary to the teaching and practice of their own Church.

  • What are the ten most peculiar (and sad) things in the Catholic ...

Any reasonable person understands that people can make wrong choices, people and their expectations can change dramatically as life goes on and forced hanging on a choice turned sour can really ruin the rest of the life for the whole family.

But you see, the Catholic Church has this thing called dogma. The creators of this faith had no personal knowledge whatsoever of married life and in fact did not have any personal experience of any kind of relationship involving sexuality in any form. However these very people did a very long time ago decide that it is not allowable to have a divorce and end an unhappy or even violent relationship. They at the same time decided that these dogmas can never be revoked or even changed in any way.

Of course there is a good intention behind all this. The creators of this faith sincerely believed that preserving the integrity of the family was of paramount importance for the society. There is nothing wrong in defending the noble institution of marriage as such. This dogma will go on creating misery as long as this dogma is upheld and there are people that really believe that Catholic Church can give them direct orders on how to act and live their lives.

The goal of this blog is to help you hold your own in political discussions--especially when the other guy's fighting dirty. Some dirty tricks are obvious, others are subtle. But even when they're blatant it can be hard to know what to say. I'll help. I lean Democrat myself, but I'm as against Democrats using underhanded tactics as I am against Republicans doing so. Fair is fair, and this blog aims to help anyone who shares this belief. 3. To make (2) possible, most of a priest's day-to-day duties are distributed among the congregation, with no one getting a portion too big to be done by someone who also has a day job. In computer science this is called distributed processing. It lets a network of ordinary computers do many software operations that used to require a big honking mainframe. Someone...
