I was wondering around what year (1960, etc) did Anti- catholic and also Anti-Irish racism die down in America? I heard it was still prevalent until the 60s, and until JFK was elected it was very prevalent. Am I wrong?
It still exists among many protestant intellectuals in the Northeast. There, it usually is in the form of talking about Catholics as if we are a bunch of simple-minded idiots.
In the Southeast, there still is a significant amount of bias against Catholics among mainline protestants. I think that is almost entirely due to the actions of Catholics to defend the rights of minorities, especially black people. The first black Christian minister to be ordained in the United States was a Catholic priest. That was back in the 1800's. The Catholic Church has long been attended by people of all races, and I think the Southeastern U.S. still has a lot of racist white people, and racist black people who hate white people and Hispanics. I have spent a lot of time in the Southeast, and I have seen and heard it myself.
In general, bias against Catholics has declined with an overall improvement in the education of the general population. Bigotry tends to be based in part on genuine ignorance. When people learn more about a group they tend to be less bigoted against that group. This is somewhat true about the relationship between non-Catholics and Catholics in the United States.
I think the image of Catholics in general, in the U.S. and around the world, has been greatly improved by the improvement of excellent communication world-wide. When people saw Pope John Paul II so often on television, his personal warmth and kindness was obvious. When people saw the great work done by Mother Theresa of Calcutta, they could not continue to look at the Catholic Church as a cold organization that spends money only on beautiful cathedrals. Throughout the 1950's and 1960's, there was a great Catholic bishop on television who was very popular among Catholics and non-Catholics alike. That was Bishop Fulton Sheen. He was a very capable speaker whose education, warmth and wit all made him attractive to millions of people. I think he changed the minds of lots of non-Catholics.
I am Roman Catholic.
Peace be with you.

What is one reason anti-Catholic sentiment stengthened during the 2nd great awakening?
A) Americans had a sense of renewed hostility toward the traditional religion of Great Britain
B) Catholicism was not rigid enough for Americans who wanted to return to traditional values
C) Catholicism was the religion of many new immigrants from Ireland
D) Preachers endorsed the penalty of death, which was opposed by Catholicism
E) Catholicism was a religion popular only with the aristocracy in America
I do not like doing homework but it's either a, or c, and given how early the 2ndGA was and the anti British leanings of that time I have to go with a.
On multiple choice always start, unless you know the answer cold, by eliminating the patently wrong answers: this reduces the field improving the chance that the answer you choose from the remainder will be the right one.
I've been working through my homework here, and no, it's not one of the questions on the form. I am reading through the effects of the Great Awakening once it reached the colonies and I would like to know why there was such great anti-Catholic feeling. I know King James was eliminated from the throne which allowed people to rise up against Catholics....
I think I'm basically missing the linking factor. Was it because King James was harsh in his rule?
The root of this anti-Catholic feeling was just a holdover from the Reformation and religious wars of the 16th century. But unfortunately, it soon reached extremes; such that Catholic worship was made illegal in some colonies, and in others the Catholic Church was forbidden from owning land.

seriously, every Bible-fundie I've encountered are acting like qualified and inerrant theologians, but all they do is bash the Catholics and back their bashings with their own interpretation of the Bible.
so, my question is, is reading and listening to anti-Catholic sentiments makes you a qualified theologian?
"realchurch", if I would ever decide to take the Bible seriously, I would go directly to the Church that compiled it in the first place.
and that would be the Catholic Church.
"realchurch" you do that too. so don't act like an angel there.
You don't raise your own belief by putting other beliefs down.
To what extent did the Republican party incorporate the anti-immigrant and anti-Catholic positions of the Know Nothing party and how important was their adoption of nativist beliefs to their success as a party?
in the 1850s. sorry.
Wait, are you saying that the Republican Party incorporated the anti-Catholic laws? (as of today or way in the past and no longer incorporated)
Or is it just only about the Know Nothing Party and the Nativist, and nothing got to do with the GOP using the anti-Catholic ideology
isn't that Un-constitutional?
I'm kind of confused

Proof BBC Scotland is anti-Catholic but loves the Orange Lodge ...
The sketch in question is one where the Burnistoun branch of the lodge decides to undergo a rebranding exercise – Orange is now too associated with the phone company and Order sounds too militant – with hilarious results. I hear that the sketch was the highlight of the preview night where the Burnistoun team carried out preview screenings, so I was looking forward to it.
Robert , Kirsty and the gang had already shown that they could easily shoot down some sacred cows – their gags with Jesus/God and Jesus as a DJ and the Virgin Mary in a drug sketch had shown they could be really funny.
Now I’m as lapsed a Catholic as they come (and now well in Agnostic territory), so I found the above hilarious, and I was looking forward to the Lodge sketch as well (I’ve got mates in the Lodge. It’s not my thing, but if they want to do it, fair play) because if you start poking fun at one set of sacred cows, all of them have to be fair play. And the Burnistoun team are funny.
...Update: Kayak pulls anti-Catholic ad from YouTube ...
. It will also no longer appear on television.
I think it is very clear that we sent Kayak a strong message: anti-Catholic advertisements aren’t acceptable. And Catholics will take their business elsewhere if our faith and faithful are mocked.
That said, I consider this matter closed. And I’m now open to using Kayak again.
I sent negative feedback via kayak.com, and frankly was impressed with the personal resonse (not a form letter) and what seemed like genuine sincerity. They said they only intended to run the ad on Comedy Central and the like. I don’t think its appropriate anywhere, but I suppose to those desensitized by the likes of Penn and Teller, this ad would be considered pretty tame.
