Catholic Catechism: When it refers to something as "gravely disordered" does that make it a sin?
Katechismus 70

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church actions and behaviors are labeled as "gravely disordered" or "intrinsically disordered" are those euphemisms for "a sin" ?

The actions are contrary to their purpose ( such as masturbation and homoerotic acts) and so are disordered.

The actions are objectively sinful but need full consent of will and sufficient knowledge to be mortally sinful and only God can judge anothewr as to his state of grace and ultimate outcome.

What does the Catholic Catechism say about competition?
Katechismus 69

I have a project for school due pretty soon and i would love help as soon as possible. I need to figure out the christian alternative to competition is and what they say about competition, but the major part is to use what they say about competetion in relation to what the catechism says. I'm not sure about the catechism and would love some exact lines, and passages that relate to their beliefs about competition and their overall take on the idea.
Thanks so much this can really help.

Competition is not contrary to Christian values as long as you remember to love your neighbor as yourself.

I think this means that if you win, you do not rub your opponent's nose in it. This would also preclude trash talking. If you defeat someone, you should praise them for their effort and encourage them to try harder next time. If you happen to lose, you should congratulate the winner and praise him on his effort. Do not hold grudges or make excuses.

Have you examples of how the catholic catechism has changed?
Katechismus 61

For example Limbo went belly up recently, presumably other changes have also been introduced over the years.

Homosexuals are no longer an abomination but are "objectively disordered", which presumably is now politically correct, catholic-speak for "an abomination".

Have you got other examples?

Slavery is out.

The Bible does not condemn slavery. Colossians 3:22 even states, "Slaves, obey your human masters in everything."

This was much debated before and during the U.S. Civil War (1861-1865), four hundred years after the Catholic Church became one of the first groups to condemn slavery.

The condemnation of slavery is one of those nonbiblical doctrines that Catholics have developed through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit over the centuries.

+ In 1462, Pius II declared slavery to be "a great crime" (magnum scelus). Note that this was 30 years before Columbus "discovered" America.

+ In 1537, Paul III forbade the enslavement of the Indians

+ Urban VIII forbade it in 1639

+ Benedict XIV forbade it in 1741

+ Pius VII demanded of the Congress of Vienna, in 1815, the suppression of the slave trade

+ Gregory XVI condemned it in 1839

+ In the Bull of Canonization of the Jesuit Peter Claver, one of the most illustrious adversaries of slavery, Pius IX branded the "supreme villainy" (summum nefas) of the slave traders.

+ Leo XIII, in 1888, addressed a letter to the Brazilian bishops, exhorting them to banish from their country the remnants of slavery -- a letter to which the bishops responded with their most energetic efforts, and some generous slave-owners by freeing their slaves in a body, as in the first ages of the Church.

What quotes from scripture and quotes from the catholic catechism relate to this prayer?
Katechismus 58

Christ has no body now on earth but yours,
no hands but yours,
no feet but yours,
yours are the eyes through which Christ's compassion
is to look out to the earth,
yours are the feet by which He is to go about doing good
and yours are the hands by which He is to bless us now.
~St. Teresa of Avila

I am having great difficulties finding scripture passages, also, I don't really know the bible all that well...

"In so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers, you did it to me" (Mt 25:40).

"Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?" (Acts 9:4-5) --because the use of 'me' when Saul was having Christians imprisoned

How has the Catechism of the Catholic Church affected AMERICA?
Katechismus 64

I am working on a research paper for AP US History on a book that has made a change, or has impacted America. I chose the book Catechism of the Catholic Church in hopes of enlightening my homosexual history teacher with the teachings of the Catholic Church. Only problem is that im having trouble finding a significant change it has made on AMERICA. Any suggestions

It hasn't even had a significant effect on Catholic America. Only now are textbooks being published with corrections and the right amount of emphasis on things.

Change your topic to the change from a Church of immigrants to a Church of middle class (and possibly the impact of Vatican II on the American Church).

Don't prostelyze with your term paper. It makes it an inferior term paper.

The use of public schools to educate Catholic children on how to be American led to the establishment of private Catholic schools. This is related to the establishment clause in the Constitution.

  • Catholic Educator: JPII: Five Years After

Hello! Welcome to my "Catholic Educator" site. For 25 years, I have been a Catholic school teacher, principal and president and I am now the headmaster of Pope John Paul II High School in Nashville, TN. I hope to use this site to post my weekly addresses to the students of JPII, but also to reflect on Catholic education and issues in our Church more generally. These articles represent my own personal views and do not necessarily reflect the views of the school or diocese for which I work.

There are now 12 high schools in the United States, with a 13th being built in Huntsville, that are named “Pope John Paul II High School” or “John Paul the Great High School”. I believe it’s a just another hint as to what history...

New catechism introduced to Catholic schools | UCA News

JAKARTA (UCAN) — The Commission for Catechetics of Jakarta archdiocese has introduced new Catholic teachings with more emphasis on faith experience for junior high school students.

About 100 Catholic teachers from various Catholic-run schools as well as state-run and private schools attended a March 20 workshop introducing the new Pelajaran Agama Katolik (PAK) — Church teachings — held in the hall of Assumption of the Virgin Cathedral Church in Central Jakarta .

The new catechism includes analysis on several issues including the environment. It also contains lessons on service to the poor from Blessed Teresa of Kolkata and Father Yusuf Bilyarta Mangunwijaya, an Indonesian architect, writer and Catholic religious leader.

“This new PAK is in line with the Jakarta archdiocese’s pastoral direction, which is to empower basic ecclesial communities as well as schools in order to encourage the grassroots and students to experience their faith more,” Father Bernardus Hardijantan Dermawan, the commission’s head, told the gathering.
