The Los Angeles archdiocese, its insurers and various Roman Catholic orders have paid more than $114 million to settle 86 claims so far. The largest of those came in December, when the archdiocese reached a $60 million settlement with 45 people whose claims dated from before the mid-1950s and after 1987 — periods when it had little or no sexual abuse insurance.
One buys specific insurance to pay for damages in the (unlikely) event that such a thing may happen. In this case, the Catholic Church found a (chump) insurance company that took the chance that sexual abuse cases had been over and done with. They lost. We do not know the premiums for such insurance, and it could have been in the hundreds of millions; nonetheless, it was probably a whole lot less that the court's demanded payout, which the insurance companies will fight to the end, or until everybody dies or goes away.
In other words, they bought the insurance because they (obviously) thought they needed it.

The church actually has insurance policies to protect it against the kinds of law suits. The leadership has knowingly moved active pediphiles to different parishes, they deny, deny and dny, while behind closed doors, they openly discuss the issues brought about by this a-moral behavior. I bet that there will be someone who responds this post that will condone the behavior and make an excuse for their lack of interest in protecting our children.
As one of the richest institutions on the face of the planet, they don't want to lose any more money than they absolutely have to because when it comes down to it, it is a business decision, and limit the liability and save the ship is more important than the lives ruined by the priests that the catholic church tries to protect.

We are getting married in 3 months! We were both raised Catholic, but are not official members of a specific church. I read somewhere that they will not marry you any less than 6 months away. We wanted to have more time but we have to speed things up because I am loosing my job and my insurance, so if we are marred I can get on his. I have a chronic medical condition so this is a must.
All these questions are typical of the non-catholic Conciliar
system since their "vatican 2" church sprouted. Such
a "dragged-out" system of catechizing is absolute nonsense.
To pretend to teach the Faithful about the responsibilities of
the Marriage Sacrament and of their future lives together has
nothing to do with the sanctity of the sacrament since that
same so-called "teaching" includes the teaching of heresy of
catholic divorce!
That is abominable and condemned by the True Church !
A true Catholic church only marries Catholics in good standing
and publishes BANNS four weeks in a row in the Bulletin of the
chapel. This is according to Canon Law and it is imperative for
the sake of society.
There is no question about the sacramental nature of marriage
but it is not a year or even 6 months, a length of time which is
UNJUST for the parties willing to join themselves in a bond with
Christ for perpetuity.
Traditional chapels which are fully in conformity with Canon Law
exist throughout the country. You may contact them at any time
and become members of True Catholicism and be married
under the laws of Christ in His One Holy Apostolic Roman
Catholic Church of Christ.

My husband and I recently got married by the courthouse. We did this because we knew we wanted to get married and thought it would be best since I need to get health insurance and it would be beneficial. We are both Catholic and having our marriage blessed in the church is extremely important to us and our family. I was wondering do I continue to have bridesmaids and do the ceremony like a wedding? I don't know what is traditonal. If you have experience let me know. Thank you!
Hi Ashley and congratulations!
Before you take anyone's advice on here, you need to call your priest and speak with him!! What is or is not allowed could vary by parish. But, here is what I know from doing a little research and being Catholic myself. Usually a blessing of the marriage (called a validation ceremony) is NOT viewed as a wedding. It is a small ceremony with usually some family present.
I cannot say this strongly enough....but you need to call your local church/priest. The reason I say this is because a while back (on this forum)...perhaps about 6 months ago, a girl was in a real pickle about her "blessing" ceremony. The reason was because she did not specifically ask her priest what was appropriate and not appropriate. She had numerous bridesmaids/groomsmen, aisle runner, flowers, etc. etc. all in place, and THEN she questioned the priest about a month before and he said "absolutely none of that is permitted." So....she was left in a real pickle as to what to do.
So...it's best to go right to the source and call your priest. Good luck and congratulations!
My husband and I were planning a big wedding. My husband even received all of his sacraments through the R.C.I.A. program at our church. Unfortunately, I became extremely sick and was diagnosed with lupus. I had to quit my job and lost my health insurance. My husband tried to add me to his but needed a marriage license to do so. We eloped with out telling anyone. Eventually we shared the news and our families were both very happy for us and still wanted to plan a church wedding. We have been married for 3 years now and have a beautiful 15 month old son. We wanted to receive the sacrament of Holy Matrimony on our 4 year anniversary, however, we were told that we could not have a Nuptual Mass because we are already married. If the church does not recognize civil ceremonies then were are not technically married. Right? If this is the case we should be allowed to have our Nuputal Mass. What do you think???
The Church recognizes your marriage already.
It can and will bless the marriage that already exists.
This is called a Convalidation of Marriage and may be able to happen during a Mass. Here is an article about the steps involved: http://www.americancatholic.org/Newslett ers/CU/ac0604.asp
Talk to your parish priest to get the process started.
With love and prayers in Christ.

I may be missing something, but I think this scandal is somewhat overrated. In Philadelphia there are perhaps 50 or so nonorthodox (that is, Reform or Conservative) synagogues with maybe 100 rabbis in all. I can personally name at least three cases of rabbis having affairs with congregants, secretaries, etc., at least one of whom murdered his wife and another of whom lost his pulpit. But nobody says there is an "epidemic" of this sort or that it reflects something rotten at the core of Judaism as a religion. I am not saying the pedophilia scandal is not real or that the church's stonewalling strategy has not made it worse. I am saying that it is being viewed through the prism of a more or less virulent anti-Catholicism that pervades western intellectual circles and does no credit to its adherents.
