catholic deacon

can anyone tell me how to become a deacon? or give me a link to a web page that tells me? thankyou

It is different in every Diocese.

First there are two types of Deacons, permanent and transitional. A transitional deacon is a man studying for the priesthood. He receives this first level of Holy Orders several months before his ordination to the priesthood- kind of on the job training.

A permanent deacon is just that- permanent. He is generally a middle age or older man in a long term, stable marriage. Once he is ordained to the diaconate he cannot remarry- even if his wife dies. Some deacons who are widowed go on in their studies and become priests.

You need to contact you Diocesan Vocations office for information on the discernment and selection process and the deacon formation programs in your area.

I know priests aren't allowed to marry or have a family, and deacons can, but that's pretty much the extent of my knowledge on the issue. If someone knowledgable could enlighten me, it would be much appreciated.

I know that the deacons in my old protestant church just helped out the pastor make church decisions, like what to spend the money on, etc etc. Are catholic deacons similar?

The priest is a professional, the guy in charge. Being a Catholic minister, a priest cannot marry.

The deacon is a lay person, kind of like a paraprofessional. Being a lay person, a deacon can marry in the Catholic Church. They can be "deputized" to perform some of the functions of the priest, like serving Communion to the sick in their own homes, but they cannot preside at Mass.

I do not feel comfortable purchasing religious or personal items for someone my spouse knows through his profession who invited us to his ordination. I can't purchase vestments, and think all the religious articles will be covered by his friends and family or those closer. Or is money appropriate?

A card would be nice, or something for the home. It doesn't have to be a religious gift. I think it's very likely that he will have many bibles already. I wouldn't give money. It's always appreciated but seems impersonal. Maybe something related to a hobby he has?

a delmatic is a vest wear by catholic deacon when he assist the prist on a mass.

I think only in a mass where he is assisting. Like priests don't wear their gear unless they are helping/co-celebrating a mass.

My fiancee and I are having a terrible time trying to schedule our wedding- the priest doesn't have time to marry us until next June!

The church offered the services of the permanent deacon to perform our wedding. I've never been to a Catholic wedding performed by a deacon- how would it be different? Is it still a sacramental marriage? Obviously it cannot be a full Mass, but can we still share the Eucharist with our guests?

The deacon cannot consecrate the Eucharist but he should be able to distribute Communion from the Tabernacle. Be sure to ask.

Just about everything else is the same.
