How will you greet someone this Christmas?
Joyful meeting

There are those who use the traditional "Merry Christmas"
So prefer "happy holidays"
Some like "Seasons greetings"

There are those (non Christians) who got offended when someone greet them "Merry Christmas" as this refers to the Christian practices.

Others prefers the the neutral way of greeting without offending someone such as Happy Holidays or Season Greetings.

Political correctness oftentimes causes much arguments in many society. I'm asking this in Philippine forum for I know Phils is predominantly Christian/Catholic. Have you ever encounter someone who prefer "happy holidays"/"Seasons Greetings"?

What are your thoughts about this?

I greet family members, relatives, friends, work mates, clerks at stores and public officials/employees either "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas."

I don't practice any religion and I don't take offense how am I greeted. There is no offensive word in my opinion, the offense is only taken by a person. Words don't have power over us if we don't allow them to.

I'm considering converting to Catholicism. Would a Catholic please answer these questions?
emlékkép / afterimage

In the name of the LORD.

Greetings to you,

I wanted to ask:

1. What exactly is the Pope to Catholicism? Is he considered Divinely appointed or is he just an elected official?
2. Why make the priest be referred to as "Father," when the Bible says in Matt. 23:9: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?sea rch=Matt.%2023:9;&version=31; ?
3. Do Catholics genuflect to any statues or images?
4. Do Catholics pray to others besides God? If so, are these prayers to others mandatory or could one just pary to God if he/she wanted to?

Thank you very much in advance for your answers.
dave-o, maybe you "have a devil," to use Biblical language. I'm being sincere.
mahek, I was just thinking about it for personal reasons.

Great questions for those sincerely thinking about converting to the one, true Catholic Church that Jesus founded. Once you understand the answers, the anti-Catholic hate speech that is prevalent won't affect you anymore. I am a convert also. I recommend looking at the Catholic Answers website at www.catholic.com.

They also have free pocasts through itunes that you can download and they address these very questions regularly. Search "Catholic Answers Live" in the itunes store.

I also recommend any of the Surprised By Truth books. You can get them on amazon.com.

Catholics do not pray to others besides God.

Serene Solstice! How do you celebrate the start of winter?

Greetings to my pagan, Wiccan and "nature religion" friends

I am a Catholic Christian and I am getting ready fro Christmas and I celebrated the 4th Sunday of Advent

Happy Hannukah and happy (civil) New Year to all!

Nollaig shona dhuit!
Beannachtai na Nollag! Christmas blessings
Pd, I like the poem

The Shortest Day by Susan Cooper

And so the Shortest Day came
and the year died
And everywhere down the centuries
of the snow-white world
Came people singing, dancing,
To drive the dark away.
They lighted candles in the winter trees;
They hung their homes with evergreen;
They burned beseeching fires
all night long
To keep the year alive.
And when the new year’s sunshine
blazed them awake
They shouted, revelling.
Through all the frosty ages
you can hear them
Echoing behind us- listen!
All the long echoes
sing the same delight,
This Shortest Day, As promise wakens in the sleeping land:
They carol, feast, give thanks,
And dearly love their friends,
And hope for peace.
And now so do we, here, now,
This year and every year.

Welcome Yule!

Does anyone else celebrate Christmas - the birth of Jesus Christ?
St.Patrick Cathedral , Karachi.

...by baking a birthday cake for baby Jesus? My family started this years ago and it is a wonderful tradition in keeping with the Christian faith. Although we live in a politically correct world; there is supposed to be separate church/state. So the next time someone says "Happy Holidays" wish them a "Merry Christmas" if you are catholic and solidify YOUR own faith! Don't dismiss other greetings either...just recognize your own!

"christmas", as in December 25, has absolutely nothing to do with the birth of the Christ.
By all research he was born during the month of Tishri (Sept/oct)
December 25 was chosen by Julius I in AD360 as a date for Christmas to appease the christians, and still celebrate the pagan holiday of Winter Solstice (December 25 is the first day after Winter solstice that days become noticeably longer on the way to Summer Solstice)

Does anyone know much about Bavaria?
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

I have to give a general presentation about Bavaria tomorrow (in German) but I have no idea what to talk about as I don't really know much about the area, all I know is that it is in south Germany and it is a highly Roman Catholic state where everyone greets each other 'gruss Gott' (greetings God is the literal translation to that I think)
So if anyone has any ideas I would be grateful

Thanks

Sure, I just got back from living there for 5 years.
Bayern (Bavaria is what americans call it) is more old fashioned and conservative compared to the rest of germany, holding more to old religious beliefs and family structures.
Bayern is often viewed by germans the same way americans look at southern states, Bayern also has a unique dialect much like the south has a southern drawl. Its about as understandable to the rest of germany as the deep south accent is to people from northern states.
The best beers in germany are brewed in Bayern, in fact, many breweries there have attached bars.
Bayern has ALOT of farmland
Bayern has 2 holocaust memorials (that I know of)
The fairy tale castle, Neuschwanstein, is in bayern
Little known fact, Snake Road outside of Grafenwoehr, Bayern is where hitler tested his personal drivers. They had to navigate the winding road no slower than 100km/h (about 60mp/h)

  • Ed#39;s Blog: Greetings from Dubai!

This week was quite different for me. On Tuesday night I traveled to Dubai to help host an admitted student reception for our new students and their families from the Middle East. It was great to get a sense of the issues facing them as they prepare to come to Boston this fall. They are a very talented group of young people who we are excited to have join our Northeastern community in September! I am thankful that our Dean of Admissions Ronne Turner asked me to accompany her team. Gregory Smith and Brian Howard did a terrific job answering the many questions parents and new students had about being a student at Northeastern. And it provided me with an even greater appreciation of the contributions our international students make to our global campus. This is what makes Northeastern...

Catholic Register: “Easter Bunny Must Die”

Another egregious example of the trend is that stupid cupid.  St. Valentine, priest and martyr, gets a pagan symbol of lust as his mascot, it’s not right.  It’s not even a good pagan symbol of lust, not that I am an expert in pagan-lust symbology, but I am quite certain there must be a better symbol than an overweight baby with wings and a bow.  I am not sure for which day a fat baby with wings is a good mascot, but the feast day of a priest and martyr isn’t one of them. Some aspects of modern Easter celebrations, however, pre-date Christianity. Some Christians even refuse to celebrate Easter because of these pagan customs that they say have nothing to do with Christianity. In fact, Easter was originally a pagan festival.

The ancient Saxons celebrated the return of spring with an uproarious festival commemorating their goddess of fertility and spring, Eastre…
