How come the Catholic Church accepts donations from well known Atheist?

The critical role of the Catholic Church in passing national health care reform legislation is coming under serious media scrutiny. But the story has taken a strange turn. It has now been revealed that George Soros, the billionaire hedge fund operator and well-known atheist, has been pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into "progressive" Catholic groups that are significant players in the national debates over health care and immigration.

On the surface, it would appear that Soros would be opposed to many positions of the Catholic Church.

A major financial backer of the ACLU, Soros supports such causes as drug legalization, the rights of "sex workers" and felons, euthanasia, radical feminism, abortion rights, and homosexual rights. He does all of this in the name of promoting an "open society."

But a review of the records of his Open Society Institute finds that a group calling itself

Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good (CACG) has received $200,000 from them over the last several years.

James Todd of Pewsitter.com, which represents traditional Catholics, calls such groups "CINOs," or Catholics In Name Only. He explains, "This group and several others have sprung up recently-I suspect purposely organized and funded-to counterbalance the growing influence of the faithful Catholics AND to try to deceive and mislead the middle of the road Catholics that have determined the last 13 Presidential elections."

An AIM investigation also finds, however, that Soros money has gone into the Catholic Legal Immigration Network (CLINIC), an organization established by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops back in 1988. It has received at least $530,000 from the Open Society Institute.

The two issues merge in the fact that the Catholic Bishops are demanding that national health care legislation cover illegal aliens.

In a story headlined, "Religious Leaders Seek Healthcare for Illegal Immigrants," the Los Angeles Times recently quoted Kathy Saile, director of domestic social development with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, as saying that illegal immigrants should be included in any healthcare reform plan. Father Richard Estrada of Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Los Angeles was described as being part of a religious service and phone bank "to urge congressional leaders to include illegal immigrants in any healthcare reform plan." His church has in the past offered sanctuary to illegal immigrants.

CACG played a role in House passage of H.R. 3962, the bill known as Pelosicare and boasts that it had joined with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Catholic Health Association, and "dozens of other Catholic and faith-based groups in celebrating this historic vote."

The group's blog even offered a "Health Care Reform Prayer," asking for God's help in passing federal legislation.

John Gehring, CACG media director, told AIM that "We have been primarily focused on highlighting the moral dimensions of this issue and articulating how Catholic social teaching addresses health care as a human right central to a just society. Along with other faith-based groups like PICO National Network, Faith in Public Life, Sojourners and others we brought citizens and faith leaders to Capitol Hill several weeks ago to meet with representatives and they emphasized the urgency for reform and specifically the critical issue of affordability. For example, Fr. Joseph Shad, S.J., a hospital chaplain at Mercy Hospital in Portland, Maine, came to Capitol Hill and met with representatives. He shared stories we have collected from citizens across the country as part of our project, Voices for Health Reform."

The Catholic Church is just a remnant of times long past. They will accept monies from anyone in order to remain in the public forum. They will also pander to the organizations that "bestow"
them with operating wealth. It would be interesting to learn what Soros's plan is re: the church and his motivation to offer monetary support.

The church is monetarily wealthy. Read about all their vineyards in the chateaus all over the world. Additionally, the church has multiple Holdings in real estate world wide. So perhaps Soros and the current pope and his "henchemen" are working a deal.

How is the "Catholic Climate Covenant" influencing Congressional votes on Cap and TAX?

"Unprecedented Initiative Asks Catholics
"Who Is Under Your Carbon Footprint?"

WASHINGTON, DC.(April 21, 2009)--As the nation marks Earth Day, the Catholic community is launching an unprecedented initiative, the Catholic Climate Covenant, to bring together in new ways religious obligations to care for creation and care for "the least of these" as a distinctive Catholic contribution to the climate change debate.

Leading national Catholic organizations are calling on Catholic individuals and families, parishes and schools, religious communities, colleges and hospitals and other Catholic organizations to take a unique St. Francis Pledge to Care for Creation and the Poor.

Organizational partners and sponsors of the Covenant Campaign reach into every corner of Catholic life here and abroad, including:

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

Catholic Charities USA serving nearly eight million people in more than 1,700 local Catholic Charities agencies and institutions

The Catholic Health Association of the United States serving one in six Americans in hospitals

Catholic Relief Services reaching more than 80 million people in more than 100 nations

The National Catholic Education Association, the largest private education system in the world

The Conference of Major Superiors of Men and the Leadership Conference of Women Religious representing hundreds of religious communities who lead with a sense of mission and real world examples of how to care for people in poverty and for God's gift of creation.

Participants also include: the Franciscan Action Network, the National Council of Catholic Women, the National Catholic Rural Life Conference, the National Federation of Priests Councils, the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, and many others.

The effort responds to and builds upon the leadership of Pope Benedict XVI, the U.S. Catholic Bishops, and many Catholic religious communities who believe that our response to climate change must be guided by the exercise of prudence, the pursuit of the common good and a priority for the poor.

Pope Benedict most recently referenced "troubling climate change" in his Easter message to the world. Before Easter, the Catholic Coalition on Climate Change sent resource packets (in English and Spanish), including the St. Francis Pledge, to all of the 17,000 Catholic parishes and 6,300 Catholic elementary schools in the nation. The Campaign and Pledge are also being promoted by a wide range of other Catholic organizations to reach deeply into every part of Catholic life.

Pressing the issue of responsibility for the impacts of climate change, the Campaign asks the haunting and provocative question "Who is Under Your Carbon Footprint?" in mailings to every parish in the nation, posters, and print ads in Catholic publications, and in major newspapers across the country.

A new website (www.catholicclimatecovenant.org), offers concrete help in carrying out the St Francis Pledge.

"The St. Francis Pledge is at the heart of this effort," says Dan Misleh, Executive Director of the Catholic Coalition on Climate Change. "By linking prayer, reflection and learning to assessment, action and advocacy, many more Catholics will become aware of the moral implications of climate change, make the connections between their own carbon footprint and their obligation to the poor and take private and public action to address the causes and consequences of climate change."

The whole world is insane it seems.

Is this Health Care Bill really being "rammed" down our throats like Hannity and Rush say it is?

With the Catholic Nuns association, and the Hospitals all across the country behind the new legislation, it doesn't sound like its being rammed to me. The Catholic Health Association which represents some 600 hospitals also support the bill as well. After reading the entire bill which the Nuns say has no provisions for funding abortions, they are confident that the passage will help many who do not have health coverage in this country.
Wow, unlike many of you who would rather listen to Rush, Sean and Mark Levin telling you lies and not fact checking behind them, they actually read the bill. The tell you the American people don't want this and are using "Chicago style strong arm tactics" and making you fear this administration instead of telling you the truth. The are a whole lot of people who strongly believe that doing nothing would be more taxing on our society than not passing a bill at all.
Evil: so you trust talk show puppets instead? Nice alternative...let them tell you whats going on of all people!
Ice: Where do you get those numbers?

It's being pushed forward because if no bill passes (admittedly this bill is not great), no health care reform will be enacted before the present system health care system collapses like our financial system did.

Nuns against priests, I choose the nuns side.

How do opponents of healthcare reform explain this?

Given that so many industry insiders support the plan how do you rationalize your opposition?
Well the right-wing media machine has definitely done its job. There are so many misinformed people people here that we end up disagreeing on details of the bill that are completely made-up.
First poster - You prove my point. You claim that supporting Obama's goals is not the same as supporting "the BO solution." Obama has not personally authored a bill, he's only laid out broad goals. So supporting those goals is exactly the same thing as supporting Obama. You are a prefect example of what misinformation can do. You make emotional responses without grasping the facts and you only end up confusing the issue for yourself and everyone else.

You can fool some of the poeple all of the time and you can fool all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.

Dawkins once said that Sexual abuse was not as bad as being raised a catholic, how does that makes you feel?

Just to show that i (unlike some) am being factual

"As horrible as Sexual abuse was, the damage was arguably less then the long-term psychological damage of bringing up a child in the catholic faith"
The God delusion

now unlike mr Dawkin let us look at the actual evidence

a 1996 study found that women who were sexually abused were 3 times more likely to attempt suicide.
[J.R Davidson 'the association of sexual abuse and attempted suidice' 1996]

NOT ONLY THAT

The American Journal of Psychiatry found that people who were raised in a relion were found to be in generally better health and less likely to commit suicide

did you get that

ATHEISTS ARE MORE LIKELY TO COMMIT SUICIDE, BE SEXUALLY ABUSED AND HAVE WORSE GENERAL HEALTH
[2004- an american hournal of psychiatry 161. ]

in light of the evidence what do you think of Mr.Dawkins claim?
i think its page 317 of the God Delusion. by Richard Dawkins
someone accused ME OF LYING

HMPH- talk about double standards
(here is the exact quote)

"Once, in the Question time after a lecture in Dublin, I was asked what i though about the widely publisized cases of sexual abuse by Catholic priests in Ireland. I replied that, as horrible as sexual abuse no doubt was, the damage was arguably less then the long term psyhcological damage inflicted by bringing up the child catholic in the first place"

  • Catholic Health Association benefits financially from new health ...

.- In a Catholic Advocate article on Wednesday, author Anne Hendershott criticized the Catholic Health Association's (CHA) support for the new health care bill and outlined the details of how she believes the group will benefit financially from the legislation.

Hendershott, who is chair of the Politics, Philosophy, and Economics Program at The King’s College in New York City, began her article recalling the words of Sr. Carol Keehan, CHA's director. On March 11, Sr. Keehan wrote a letter to the House of Representatives which urged the congressmen to “move quickly” to support the Senate-approved bill. According to Hendershott, the letter “was simply a confirmation of what many of us already knew – that Sr. Keehan’s organization has been supporting the President’s plans for health care reform from the earliest days.”

The insurance reforms will make the lives of millions more secure, and their coverage more affordable. The reforms will eventually make affordable health insurance available to 31 million of the 47 million Americans currently without coverage.

CHA has a major concern on life issues. We said there could not be any federal funding for abortions and there had to be strong funding for maternity care, especially for vulnerable women. The bill now being considered allows people buying insurance through an exchange to use federal dollars in the form of tax credits and their own dollars to buy a policy that covers their health care. If they choose a policy with abortion coverage, then they must write a separate personal check for the cost of that coverage.
