Will a Catholic high school give me a significant boost in college admissions?
WMA111911_081

The Catholic School: No AP classes, but plenty of honors. Not quite as many options.

The Public School: Tons of APs, ranked by Newsweek as one of the top high schools in the nation.

Also, if I go to the Catholic school I will have to drop one of the languages I am taking (German and Spanish) and take theology.

Normally, I would think the answer was clearly the public school. However, I hear that colleges are more likely to admit Catholic school students because the curriculum at Catholic high schools is harder. Is this true? And which should I choose?

Interesting choice. Even though you may have an idea of what to major in, your choice will likely change as you grow as a student over the next four years.

Honestly, AP classes count a great deal, and national rankings count even more - if you're trying to get into a highly competitive school (especially a Public Ivy like Michigan or Illinois). Then again, what counts about the AP isn't the class but the test. You can take an AP or CLEP test regardless of what high school you attend.

I went to a Blue Ribbon public school that sent several graduating seniors to the Ivy League every year. I chose a small, public midwestern liberal arts school (it's had pros and cons).

If you're looking at Catholic universities, I don't want to say they give preference to Catholic high schools, but you'd have to take theology there anyway.

Now that I've thought out loud, I'd say go with the public school - especially if you plan on using your language background and want to test out of some of your freshman year. This will help you save up some money for college, as well as give you a greater breadth of electives.

One of the reasons so many of my public school classmates got into top research schools (Illinois, Northwestern, Purdue, Bradley) is because they took microbiology as a lab science and a second semester of calculus - neither of which were offered by the smaller Catholic school because they didn't have the critical size to support the courses.

Good luck!

Can getting suspended at a Catholic school in 7 gr affect your chances of getting into a Catholic High School?
WMA111911_418

I am in 7th grade, and I go to a Catholic/Christian elementary school. I got into a fight and got suspended. Will this affect my chances of getting into a Catholic High School ? I also have straight A's and one A-.

Maybe. I know that when I tried to go to a Catholic high school the school said that my discipline record was so bad that the only reason they accepted me, much less considered me, was because of how impressive my academics were (pretty much all A's, some B's, and one or two C's, and the standardized entrance exams I took placed me at a college level in every subject except math which placed me at a 12th grade level. I pretty much scored in the 99th percentile on every test I took). The reason for my poor discipline record was because I had been bullied severely in grades 6 and 7 and thanks to my public middle school's "zero tolerance" policy both the bully and the victim (me) got punished exactly the same. And in 8th grade I got in a lot of trouble because I went to a private school where I got in trouble for things like forgetting to wear my glasses and not holding my broken arm right in a sling.

Anyway, I opted just to go to public high school since said catholic school would only have admitted me on probationary status (meaning if I got in trouble for anything, no matter how minor, I would have been expelled). Things worked out pretty well though. The public high school was a really good one academically, the students were well behaved, and I ended up going to a prestigious university.

Anyway, one suspension does hurt you but it probably won't kill you. As long as it's your first one I'd imagine most schools will ignore it considering your academics.

Why do the Private Catholic Schools dominate High School football?
WMA111911_174

Where I live (central california coast) there are a handful of Catholic High School football teams that rarely lose. Knowing the practices of the Catholic Church, I feel that something less than ethical may be going on. Anyone know for sure?

Easy. We have reputations for good football teams. Amazing coaches, and players that go to our school to get the sports college scholarships.
Also, my school's extremely focused on sports. Rich alumni like sports. Are we seeing a pattern? :)

Have you ever transferred from a public high school to a catholic high school?
WMA111911_197

I'm thinking of doing it. I don't have the time to type a big long thing right now but be warned I will later. I've attended catholic school my whole life. This year (I'm a freshman) I decided to go with two of my friends to my town's public high school. All the other girls save 4 in my class went to an all girls catholic high school. Now I'm thinking of transferring there. Have you done something similar or would you?

I went from a catholic preschool, middle school and high school to a public one for the last two years.
It was really good for me, I meet new people with different opinions about life, religion, politics, etc.
And after school I went to private college and I liked it to, it all depends on how you see things and if you can enjoy every different situation.
You want to go to the new school? go what do you have to loose?

    Here’s a preview:

If you catch the full feature (or order your own copy ), you can relive the team’s 2007-08 season. It’s the year that the team pursues its 23rd state championship and that the inner-city school, which subsists on donations, tries to raise enough funds to stay open for another year.
