what american holiday does El Dia de los Muertos (day of the dead) correspond with? Catholic holy days?

El Dia de los Muertos is the Mexican day of the dead. What I need to know is what American holiday and what Catholic holy day it corresponds to. Thanks [:

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is celebrated on the Catholic holy days All Saints Day (November 1) and All Souls Day (November 2).

Some aspects of the Day of the Dead are somewhat non-Christian. One of these is the belief that the souls of children are believed to return first on November 1, with adult spirits following on November 2.

Catholic Schools Taking Away Holy Days As Days Off From School?

It used to be that years ago holy days were made to be days off from catholic school so that kids will be able to go to Mass for that day. This day and age the schools are realizing that these kids are not doing that anymore so are deciding to bring back these days as part of school. All Saints Day, The Assumption.. are examples of these days.

Of course parents and kids are complaining that they want or need the days off. Do you think they should remain closed for school or have them back to school as the kids don't use them for Mass.

Years ago, more moms were at home, too. Not the case today.

The majority of Catholic schools share a campus with, or are otherwise very near, the parish church -- and students can go to Mass on holy days as a part of the school day. Most in my area go in groups to the mid-morning and/or noon Masses.

If it's left up to the kids whether to go or not, of course, they probably won't -- day off, or no day off. But if it's expected of them by the school AND their parents, they will.

Who determines which days are Catholic "Holy Days of Obligation?"?

Is this determined by the Pope, The Holy See, The College of Cardinals, diocease bishops, or parish priests?

The Roman calendar is under the jurisdiction of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in the Vatican, under instruction from the documents of the Second Vatican Council. But regional councils of bishops have some latitude in assigning the observance of holy days, and individual bishops may grant dispensations as they see fit when the obligation poses a difficulty, such as feasts that occur the day before or after Sunday.

Although Epiphany is normally observed on January 6th, the United States observes it on the Sunday after January 1st. And in the Western U.S., Ascension Day is the 7th Sunday of Easter, instead of the Thursday before as in most other places. Certain countries observe obligatory holy days that others do not because of patron saints associated with them. But ultimate responsibility for the calendar resides with Rome.

What are the Holy Days Of Obligation in the Catholic Church? Is Easter Sunday one of them

Ta

Holy Days of Obligation are feasts on which Catholics are required to assist at Mass.

In the United States these are:
• Christmas, the Nativity of Jesus, December 25
• Mary Mother of God, January 1
• Ascension of the Lord, forty days after Easter
• Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 15
• All Saints' Day, November 1
• Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, December 8

Every Sunday is considered a Holy Day of Obligation. Therefore Holy Days that are always on Sundays like Easter are not listed.

Outside the United States, cultural variations of Holy Days may occur.

  • Easter in Poland Reveals Unknown Traditions: Coloured Eggs or Wet ...

Easter in Poland seems to be for many Poles the most important Christian celebration, even more important than Christmas. It also involves a lot of preparations to all events which take place every year and without which, Polish Easter wouldn’t be traditional and that’s what seems to attract and gather Polish families especially at this time of the year.

It all starts with the Palm Sunday, which in Christianity is the Sunday a week before the Easter Sunday. On this day, the Poles gather in their churches and carry Easter palms, traditionally made of willow branches and decorated with paper flowers and ribbons. In many regions of the country, there are contests organised for the tallest Easter palm. The record breaking so far was a palm nearly 33,5 metres tall.

Bill O#39;Reilly Comments on the Catholic Church and its Current ...

Today is Good Friday and for the world’s more than 1.1 billion Catholics (of which I am one), we spend the day fasting and remembering how Jesus Christ was tortured, crucified, and murdered for his message of peace. While I am not the best Catholic on the planet, I do try to adhere to most of the restrictions and regulations put into place by the Catholic Church for holy days of obligation such as Good Friday. So… I won’t be eating today as it’s a day of fasting and abstinence in the Church.

Anyway, for some time I’ve wanted to put up an entry on this blog about the Catholic Church and its current scandals. However, I haven’t been able to find the right words to say that the scandals – while individually horrible – are not the proper way for the public to frame the Catholic Church. FOX News commentator Bill O’Reilly actually wrote a column on his personal website yesterday that perfectly addresses the way that I think most Catholics view the scandals in the Church. The column, in its entirety, is below.
