I was wondering, what hymn, song, or musical piece do you think is most precious to us Roman Catholics?
I personally love Schubert's Ave Maria, taken from the Bible. The music is beautiful, and the words remind me of the precious gift of Christ, the sacred 'yes,' of his mother, and my own duty as a Christian.
If I had to chose the one song most precious to the Catholic spirit, however, I would suggest the simple Alleluia. A shout of joy and praise to God, it is practically the same in all languages. It is at the very heart of our religion.
Stephen Tharp plays Holy God, we praise thy Name at Saint Patrick Cathedral in NYC. The rattling noise heard in the background is the Cathedral ...
As a child it was my 90 yr old dad' favourite - The Bells of the Angelus. I am 60 and I too learned it at school. It is the same tune as the hymn we know now as Immaculate Mary I have searched loads of web site but nothing.. Under is the first few lines. Hope it can jog someone's memory. Thank you.
The Bells of the Angelus - are calling us to pray
In sweet tones announcing the sacred Ave -
Ave, Ave, Ave Maria(repeat)
It's called Bells of the Angelus.
The bells of the Angelus, Call us to pray.
In sweet tones announcing the sacred Ave
Ave, Ave, Ave Maria.
Ave, Ave, Ave Maria.
An angel of mercy, led Bernadette's feet,
Where flows the deep torrent, Our Lady to greet.
Ave, Ave, Ave Maria.
Ave, Ave, Ave Maria.
Immaculate Mary, Our hearts are all thine.
Protect us, your children, Who kneel at thy shrine.
Ave, Ave, Ave Maria.
Ave, Ave, Ave Maria.
recording? It is a very old hymn.
I'm not sure it's that old. AFAIK the hymn is called "All I Ask of You", written by Gregory Norbet of Weston Priory, and it can be found at their websites (see links).
Okay, I heard this song at my parish during Advent and have been looking for it ever since and can not find it. I really like it and was wondering if someone could tell me what the name is. I only know a few of the lyrics, It goes like this:
Come Lord, maranatha! Come and bring us your peace. Come Lord, maranatha! Come to us, set us free.
Maranatha

hope this helps :D
You can't play a non hymn in a Catholic church in Ireland for a funeral.
If you want to write one yourself, what is the format and does it take years to approve?
I would just like to know, for when I am old I can play a song I actually like that is original.
Cheers
Somebody told me do, you can get a modern one improved by the church, but it is hard to do.
Yep we have plenty, but nice have something new.
Thanks anyway.
They should have hymns for you already, Catholic Hymns are bible verses put to music and sung. I am not sure the protocol in Ireland but maybe you could put something together for the reception/memorial?
God Bless and Good Luck.

Question about Wedding Music? :Wedding Questions.net
Here Comes the Bride is not set in stone, even in a Catholic church. I believe there are restrictions on some kinds of secular music, but even Here Comes the Bride is actually a secular tune, since it was written for Richard Wagner’s opera Lohengrin. The most commonly used music for the recessional also comes from an opera, Mendelsohn’s opera of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Both were written late in the nineteenth century, and thus are not that long-standing as traditions go.
But there are many churches that allow a wider selection of secular music, and many couples who are not marrying in a church, or even using a clergyperson.
So, yes, there are a lot of brides walking up the aisle to something other than Wagner. Me? I was lead up the aisle by a bagpiper who played a lovely traditional Scottish tune called Highland Wedding. Pachelbel’s Canon in D has been a very popular tune for wedding processionals for the last thirty or forty years. JS Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, and Purcell’s Trumpet Voluntary are also popular, as are a wide variety of hymns and classical pieces.
...Roman Catholic Identity: Crux Fidelis: Faithful Is the Cross, One ...
Today at the Solemn Veneration of the cross we will sing the Crux Fidelis , a hymn about the Cross of Christ written by St. Venantius Fortunatis in the late 6th century. Traditionally sung during the transferal of the Blessed Sacrament during the Good Friday Liturgy, it was written for the reception of a large relic of the True Cross from the Byzantine Emperor Justinian II to the monastery of St. Croix at Poitiers.
