I am a born-and-raised, non-practicing Catholic. Both my parents are as well, and to the best of my knowledge, so are all my ancestors. My grandfather, who was more devout, had a Catholic memorial service. There was a cross in his coffin and priests said chants over him and whatnot. I was uncomfortable with this aspect of this service and decided that I do not want a Catholic funeral. But I do want to be buried in the Catholic cemetery where all my family and ancestors were and are buried. So my question is, can I be buried in my ancestors' Catholic cemetery, WITHOUT first having a Catholic service beforehand? I don't think so but I am not sure, and if this were allowed, it would be the "best of both worlds" for me. If not, I guess I will just have to bite the bullet (metaphorically speaking; I'll be dead) and have a Catholic service.. thoughts?
I dont know if you have to have the Catholic service, but my Grandmother's service, wasnt about chants and all that... it was located in the catholic church but we had a friend do the service. and she was buried in a catholic cemetry.
but what would it matter? you are dead, right? your sould probably wont attend the service.

This morning a good friend of mine passed away. Tomorrow night there is a memorial prayer for her at a Catholic church. I am not Catholic and I don't really know what to expect. I don't want to be rude by not taking communion or anything else. How do I still pay respect to a friend without seeming rude?
Good question! You don't mention having a religious affiliation yourself, so I'm going to assume you don't have one. I was brought up Lutheran (Missouri Synod) and the church services are very similar to Catholic services.
First, don't take communion in a church if you're not affiliated with that religion. Communion is a sacrament and it would be improper for you to do so. When people begin to file out of the pew to take communion, file out with them then step back when you reach the aisle. When everyone is finished filing out of that pew, return to your seat.
There's a lot of standing up, singing from a hymnal, recitation and sitting down at a church service. Because you're in His house, I think you should go through the motions along with the congregation out of respect. You can bow your head during the times of prayer, and pick up a hymnal and silently read along, if you choose not to sing.
I'm sure you know this, but just a gentle reminder, make sure you turn off your cellphone before going in (better yet, leave it in the car).
I hope you find the service consoling during this difficult time, and I offer my condolences to you on the loss of your friend.
Peace be with you.
I'm going to a Memorial Day service at a Catholic Cathedral, but I'm not sure on what to wear! Should I wear black or white? Or maybe even something else? Please no silly answers because this is something completely serious.
Personally, I would wear Navy Blue and have a white blouse with red heels as those are our most patriotic colors. However, please know that all colors are appropriate except maybe very loud colors, which I don't believe you are interested in wearing or you wouldn't be asking this question to begin with. Same goes with style of clothing, whether you chose a dress; skirt outfit or slacks as a woman is not nearly as important as the fact that you wear something that shows good taste, obviously no low cut blouses and that sort of thing. God Bless YOU for going to the service and showing your respect.

Ever since he first stepped onto the court as a skinny freshman in November of 2006, much has been expected of Catholic Memorial senior T.J. Bray .
After building a reputation as an outstanding player at Holy Apostles Grade School in New Berlin, Bray wasted little time cementing his reputation as an outstanding high school player.
At the 2006 Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Shootout at the Al McGuire Center, Bray came off the bench just nine games into his prep career to score eight huge points in helping Catholic Memorial shock a loaded Indianapolis Franklin Central team that included four future NCAA Division I...
