What do you base your moral standards upon and why do you feel they are superior to Catholic ones?
If you base your morality on what you think is right, then don't you think you're a little biased?

Are any moral standards superior to Catholic ones? Superior moral standards would imply that a person considers themselves above another. Moral standards should be decided by the individual based on their core beliefs, values, and so on.
Mine have been gathered through a lifetime, and they generally tend to be based upon what brings joy, comfort, and peace to other people. I would not say, however, that they are superior to Christian morals, or anyone else's morals, for that matter.

It is always forbidden. Sex is reserved for marriage. The virtue of chastity means even keeping thoughts of sex at a distance due to the obsessive and overwhelming nature of lust. Very conservative Catholics might say that sex is meant only for reproduction. I prefer Christopher West's understanding, which is that sex is for the unity of the couple, from which procreation and intimacy both arise.

I think Augustine said it very well - the hunger for sex is not like other hungers. A glutton can eat so much and then is full. A drunk can drink so much and then passes out. But a man full of lust can never really be satiated. This is another reason to control one's desires, and why sex before being in a committed marriage is so emotionally burdensome.

Did anyone else catch the distictive Catholic morals and virtues displayed throughout the Lord of the Rings trilogy? J. R. Tolkien was a devout Roman Catholic who almost converted C.S. Lewis before his death. I have read articles written by priests comparing the Lord of the Rings to good Catholic virtues and morals, and I myself have seen a lot of similarities with Catholic prophecy in the stories. I was wondering if anyone else has an opinion on this?
Pickles, I know C.S. Lewis was a protestant. I meant that J.R.R. Tolkien almost converted him to Catholicism before he died.

Tolkien's spirituality, says Birzer, was not generically Christian but specifically Roman Catholic: the lembas that sustains the company represents the Eucharist; Galadriel and Elbereth exemplify traits of the Virgin Mary; and the company looks to the restoration of a kingdom similar to the Holy Roman Empire. The best chapter of Birzer's study explores how Tolkien's "sanctifying myth" was informed by such Roman Catholic beliefs; Tolkien told a Jesuit friend, for example, that the trilogy was "a fundamentally religious and Catholic work; unconsciously so at first, but consciously in in the revision." Other chapters place Tolkien more generally within the usual canon of 20th-century Christian humanists, including his on-again, off-again friend, C. S. Lewis.

very good scorpio B. Actually, J.R.R. Tolkien described Sauron as the greatest demon under the Tolkien mythological Satan. So he would be the equivalent of the anti christ or one of the greater anti christs. If you read the Silmarilian it really gets into where Sauron stands. Very interesting book.
I believe it was one of the documentaries I watched about Tolkien that mentioned him nearly converting C.S. Lewis. I will have to do a little looking around too.

Writers do put their world view into things. The ring represented power. The quest represented the choice to do the right thing and all the hardships that such an ongoing path will bring.
