Catholic & Orthodox ?
Basilica North End

What s main differences between them?

There are today a lot of theological differences, some big, some small. Here are a few:

1. filoque: Roman Catholics state that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father AND the Son. Orthodox Catholics state that the Holy Spirit proceeds ONLY from the Father.
2. papal authority: RCs grant the the head of the Church greater authority than OCs do. Following from this, RCs believe in papal infallability (when speaking for the Church, on religious matters, with the authority of St. Peter), and OCs do not.
3. Purgatory: RCs believe in it, OCs do not.
4. The Immaculate Conception of Mary (saying she was born without sin): RCs believe in it, OCs do not.

When they split, both Churches excommunicated each other. In recent years, there have been efforts made towards reconciliation, if not reunion. For instance, OCs are once again allowed to receive communion in RC churches.

What about female deacons in the Catholic & Orthodox churches?
(Untitled)

Scripture and Tradition give evidence of female deacons, why do the Orthodox and Catholics no longer allow them?

There is absolutely no reason not to restore the practice of female deacons.

Non-Catholic/Orthodox Christians, do you use the sign of the cross for any of your prayers?
St Anthony the Great

The reason I said Non-Catholic/Orthodox Christians is because I know you use the sign of the cross. I was wondering do any other Christians out there use the sign of the cross or ever felt moved to do so.

In addition to the Catholic Church, the Sign of the Cross is prayed by the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches, and the Anglican and Lutheran Churches.

I open my hand and touch my brow, and say,
"In the name of the Father"

Then I touch my heart with my hand, and say,
"and of the Son."

I touch my shoulders left and right, and say,
"and of the Holy Spirit"

I say,
"Amen."

The Sign of the Cross is
+ A statement of belief in the Holy Trinity
+ A statement of belief in and thanksgiving for Jesus' sacrifice on the Cross
+ God blessing us
+ Us Blessing God ("I will bless the Lord at all times")
+ A prayer using your entire body
+ A Bible quote (Matthew 28:19)

"At every forward step and movement, at every going in and out, when we put on our our clothes and shoes, when we bathe, when we sit at table, when we light the lamps, on couch, on seat, in all the ordinary actions of daily life, we trace upon the forehead the sign (of the cross).
-- Tertullian, De Corona 211 C.E. http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/te xt/tertullian04.html

In French: Au nom du père, Et du fils, Et du Saint-Esprit. Amen.
In Latin: In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.
In Spanish: En el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. Amén.

What are the differences between catholic and orthodox church architecture?
(Untitled)

I've been searching for differences between the two types of architectural styles but I can't find anything I can actually understand and I was wondering if someone could explain, simply, what are the main differences between Orthodox Churches and Catholic Churches except for the whole standing and sitting thing.
Thank you in advance!

Eastern Orthodox Churches have:
- domes
- iconostasises
- no sculptures
- are always built on the plan of circle, cross or square

What's the difference between Catholic and Orthodox?
(Untitled)

This is kind of odd because I have Lutheran Grandmothers, Catholic Grandfathers and other members of my family are Russian Orthodox. What's the difference between Catholic (Eastern European), and Russian Orthodox?

The Ministry of Saint Peter the Pope.

Both agree in a unique ministry for the Pope, but disagree with the range of authority. Very close to bridging this gap between this great schism of over a 1000 years. Pray that we may be One Body in Christ completely.

" Or the FSSP and IBP. Remember, as Cardinal Ratzinger, His Holiness was more than happy to celebrate the traditional Latin Mass. And he was very supportive of the formation of the FSSP. The IBP came into being during his pontificate. He certainly shares the liturgical outlook of these groups: one has only to see the reforms he has made to the Papal liturgy, which looks increasingly like the traditional Latin Mass. Even Stephenson remarks on the: ". . . But his convergence with the SSPX does not stop with liturgical matters. If one examines the Holy Father's approach to ecumenism, one finds a similar approach. Recently, Cardinal William Levada addressed a gathering in Canada where he said that "ecumenism of the return" was the real ecumenism. This could not be more in line with SSPX thought,...

Today in Catholic History – The Siege of Constantinople « Catholic ...

On this day in 1453, the forces of the Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II surrounded the city of Constantinople to begin a siege of the city that would end on 29 May 1453 with the fall of that city to the Ottoman forces and the end of the Byzantine Empire.

While the last Roman Emperor Constantine XI appealed for help from the West, Pope Nicholas V was unwilling to send help without an agreement to accept the decrees of the Council of Florence regarding union between the Orthodox and Catholic Churches. Though it is questionable how much help Nicholas could have provided considering the limited assistance Pope Eugene IV was able to provide in 1438 when the Emperor of Constantinople did agree to acknowledge papal authority.

Still some Western forces did arrive from the Italian city states. But the forces of Constantinople numbered only 7,000 [of which 2,000 were foreign mercenaries] and they faced a besieging army of 100,000.
