I have to ask because I continuously here the 1 billion figure, 1 in 6 people is Catholic. However, I know plenty of people who were baptized and confirmed in the Catholic church who now identify as atheist or are part of another religion. Somehow I feel like these people are still getting counted as Catholic. So is it based on polling? or Church registry? Please don't answer if it's just what you think, I want to know. It's a waste of time.

Catholic countries have lower suicide rates than Protestant ones and "even within Protestant countries those areas with Catholic populations [have] lower rates." It is worth noting that "the reduced suicide rate of Catholics relative to Protestants is independent of their minority status."

A national survey conducted by the Barna Research Group (Ventura, California), determined that in the U.S., Catholics and Lutherans have the lowest divorce rate among major Christian denominations. (Baptists had the highest divorce rate).

More science fiction and fantasy writers belong to the Catholic Church than to any other religious body. Notable among these are G.K. Chesterton, Andrew Greeley, J.R.R. Tolkien, R.A. Lafferty, Anthony Boucher, Clifford Simak, Walter M. Miller, Jr. and Gene Wolfe. On a per capita basis, there are more practicing Catholics than practicing Protestants among mainstream sf/f writers. However, there are some specific religious bodies other than the Catholic Church which are better represented on a per capita basis. In the introduction to Sacred Visions, Andrew Greeley (the famed priest-sociologist-novelist) suggests Catholicism fits better with science fiction than Protestantism. The Jesuit priest/scientist is one of the most common types of religious characters in science fiction literature.

There are approximately 400,000 Christians in Africa. Of those 400,000, how many are Catholic? Please provide your source.
Oh wait, 400,000,000
It's an outdated religion book, back from over a decade ago, so it isn't exactly right, but the number they give is 400,000
There are way more Christians than that in Africa.
The Catholics say they have 158 million in 2006: http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/new.ph p?n=12752 but your 400,000 isn't even reasonable. That is the big place the church is growing.

How has the Catholic church addressed the concern of an exploding world population?
God is the person that said be fruitful and multiply is he not? So it is not a Catholic issue.
If the world followed The Church and scripture we wouldn't have a population problem.
1) Do not have sex until married
2) Do not commit adultery
3) Only have 1 wife
So this leaves only Married people having children.
What would the world population be at if there were no illegitimate children?
Maybe you should address this to the Muslims who have many wives and many, many children?
Peace be with you.
Since without illegal mexicans jumping the border, catholicism would be dying in america. Right?
The Church has no borders. It doesn't matter to the Church where a person resides. If they support immigration I would expect it to be for legal immigration, with all the benefits as any other human in the US. I would expect the Church to be against illegal immigration to prevent exploitation by those who worship money.

Local Catholic Population Expected To Double Over Decade
With every seat filled at the Monday evening Mass welcoming Bishop Vasquez, it's apparent the Catholic church is growing in the Lone Star State.
"In the next 10-15 years it supposed to double which should put us right at a million. If that's the case, that something we have to ready for. It's exciting but at the same time, it's not something that we can just let happen. It's something we have to plan for, be ready and prepared for," said Bishop Vasquez.
A native Texan, Bishop Vasquez plans on relying on area Priests to continue that trend.
"The more I listen to my priests, the more I know how they're able to serve the people in this diocese and that helps me to be a good sheppard, a good leader. And that's what I'm supposed to do," said Vasquez.
"Here at Texas A&M we recognize the gift that the students are to whole diocese. We have about 15,000 Catholic students between Texas A&M and Blinn College," said Father David Konderla of St. Mary's.
