What would happen if a person became a Priest, and wanted to leave the Priesthood?
Let's say....Because he fell in love? Or felt that he was wrong about his calling?
I know, I know....The seminary is meant for those reasons....
But if you were a Catholic Priest?
Is there a way to leave the church in good standing?
And still be able to receive the Eucharist?
But leave the Priesthood?
Thanks!
=)
Yes, there is a way. Catholic author Michael Dubriel was a priest at one time, and now he's married. And yes, he can still receive the Eucharist whenever he is in a state of grace.
When a priest begins to doubt his calling for whatever reason, he should consult his spiritual director (and the bishop, if that's not who his spiritual director is). Generally, a retreat or sabbatical is recommended for extended time to pray and be prayed for. If he and the bishop agree that he should be released from his vows, then he is. He's still a priest, though -- sacraments can't be undone. He's just a laicized priest.
If you have ever thought about becoming a Catholic Priest, or wanted to know more about the priesthood, this film is for you.
I have felt there is something missing & feel I may being called to preisthood. How do you know its authentic? I am tall good looking gainfully employed and definitely heterosexual. Just feel that God possibly could be calling me to this vocation. When I look around at the decisions being made by many people today, I just feel that most of it is not god centered. This nagging feeling permeates most everything I do. Could it be that god is calling me, as someone normal, socialized and prepared to answer his call? I love the lessons in the gospel and how attending Mass makes me feel. Have dated many women in the past and for one reason or another feel that I could be called to a more meaningful vocation. Has anyone else struggled with this? Im in early thirties and farrrrr from a bible thumper per se, attend ballgames, drink beer with friends etc. Could someone like me be called to this type of vocation?
Thanks for any responses!!
Lots of money in that field. You should do it.
all of a sudden decided to forgo their copying of the Roman priesthood with the white collar and everything. I saw a clergyman from a Church that is not Catholic who normally wears the Roman collar but he was wearing regular pants and a polo shirt. You would think if the outfit was merely a statement of your position with God it would be good to wear no matter what huh?
I was raised in a Protestant denomination.
None of its clergy EVER wore collars.
I realize that this rule has always been dispensable, and that the current code of canon law no longer has it that birth out of wedlock is an impediment to priestly ordination. I just wanted to know why it used to be the case.
because in the middle ages, the clergy was made up of the legitimate sons of the aristocracy, not their bastards. Families paid for their sons' education in the church, and it was generally the third and fourth sons who became priests. The first inherited the land, the second joined the military, and the third joined the priesthood. It was just what was expected.
It can't have the words job, career, essay, paper, or priest in it.

Ratzi's personal preacher has today likened the attention being served upon the pontiff and his church for the legion of innocents abused and molested by catholic priests, and abetted via both their superiors and peers turning a blind eye, as well as actively covering up for the crimes, to the "collective violence" suffered by victims of the holocaust. yes, if you were sent by nazis to the gas chamber for no better reason than the accident of your birth, your plight is no more serious and significant than that of clerics (finally) being asked pointed question about their complicity in the well-documented, pervasive and systematic rape of children. the decidedly un-reverend raniero cantalamessa claims that a "jewish friend" ("yes, and some of my best friends are jewish") wrote to him to say...
Chrism Mass homily excerpt on the Crisis in the Catholic Church ...
People expect that one who is consecrated with the holy oil of Chrism, will act in an exemplary manner, and never betray the trust which people know they should be able to place in a Catholic priest. At his ordination we pray: Bless this chosen man, and set him apart for his sacred duties. And yet to our shame some have used the awesome gift of the holy priesthood for base personal gratification, betraying the innocent and devastating their lives.
When that happens, our first concern must be for those innocent young people who have been abused, to help them overcome their suffering, and to resolve to take whatever steps are needed to be as sure as is possible that this does not happen again. We have all had to learn through failures and mistakes and that is especially true of bishops, who have sometimes failed in their responsibility to act effectively.
