catholic rosary

I recently wrote a story where I had a Catholic character who regularly wore a rosary. Today I read where someone said it was wrong to wear rosaries, they're supposed to be an aid to prayer. Well, that's why my character wears it--so he'll have it handy to pray with. I understand why it would be offensive for a non-Catholic to wear it just for looks, but is there a problem with a devout Catholic wearing one? It seems to me it would be better than just stuffing it in a pocket.

Right or wrong, that's an interesting attribute for a fictional Catholic character. Part of a good solid works of fiction is making a strong symbol of an object that most if not all of the main characters come into meaning contact with during the course of the story. This Rosary could be that object.

If one is wearing a Rosay simply because it looks like a nice; with absolutely no consideration for it's theological significance, this IS wrong.

However, it's not wrong for a Catholic to wear a Rosary if the intention is to indirectly make a quiet statement/profession about one's association with the Church.

I seriously doubt a non-Catholic Christian is going to wear a Rosary. Any that do WILL be mistaken for Catholics, I guaranteee.

As far as Catholics are concerned, it's the context in which the Rosary is worn that makes the difference.

Right - unless - this character of yours is in the practice of praying the Rosary at every possible opportunity. This could make the contant pulling it out and putting it back a real hassle. It would be more productive and constructive to simply wear it. You can have this in mind for your character.

The bible didn't mention anything about His believers wearing or praying upon them.

Jesus said:Do not repeat over and over.that will not get you an audience with the Father
You, however, when you pray, go into your private room and, after shutting your door, pray to your Father who is in secret; then your Father who looks on in secret will repay you. 7 But when praying, do not say the same things over and over again, just as the people of the nations do, for they imagine they will get a hearing for their use of many words. 8 So, do not make yourselves like them, for God YOUR Father knows what things YOU are needing before ever YOU ask him.
