Late Afternoon Catholic Good Friday Service Times in Columbus Ohio?
111117_RomanMissal_JM

I have to work until 3:30 at one job on Good Friday, and I have to be at my other job at 8pm. I would really like to go to a Catholic service that day, but they all seem to be at noon, 3, or 7. Does anyone know if there is a 4, 5, or 6pm service in the Columbus area that day?

The Bible tells us that Jesus died and was buried before sunset on Good Friday and so most of the services are before sunset.

The Cathedral of St. Joseph will have a special prayer service at 8 pm: http://www.saintjosephcathedral.org/Bull etins_2009/2009_MARCH_29,_FIFTH_SUNDAY_O F_LENT_-_BLTN.doc

2009 - Catholic Service: St Michael's

Sunday Mass at St. Michael The Archangel Church in Canton.

What is a typical Catholic church service like?

I need to know as much detail as possible. I have been to baptisms, weddings, and funerals in the Catholic church but never a regular service.

Here is an outline of the Mass:

• Introductory Rites
. • Entrance (All stand)
. • Greeting
. • Act of Penitence
. • Kyrie Eleison (Greek for "Lord have mercy")
. • Gloria
. • Opening Prayer

• Liturgy of the Word
. • First Reading - usually from the Old Testament (All sit)
. • Responsorial Psalm
. • Second Reading - usually from a New Testament Epistle
. • Gospel Reading (All stand)
. • Homily (All sit for the sermon)
. • Profession of Faith (the Nicene Creed) (All stand)
. • Prayer of the Faithful (prayers of petition)

• Liturgy of the Eucharist
. • The Preparation of the Gifts - the bread and wine are brought forward and placed on the altar, our monetary offerings are also collected at this time (All sit)
. • The Prayer over the Offerings (All stand)
. • The Eucharistic Prayer - during this prayer the bread and wine change into the Body and Blood of Christ (Catholics kneel, visitors may kneel or sit)
. • The Lord's Prayer (All stand)
. • The Rite of Peace (We offer each other a sign of peace)
. • The Breaking of the Bread
. • Communion - non-Catholics are requested out of respect not to receive Communion, they may approach the altar with their arms crossed over their chest to receive a blessing (Stand or kneel according to local custom)

What is typical dress for attending a Catholic service?
TX_Colleges_Nov 2011_1559

I'm thinking about visiting my local Catholic church to see what it's like... what should I wear? I don't want to appear over-dressed or under-dressed. Also, what should I expect?

Thank you for showing respect by asking. And welcome.

Please:
• Dress in business casual or better
• If you feel comfortable then pray and sing with the rest of the congregation.
• Sit and stand when everyone else does.
• If you feel comfortable kneeling during the Consecration then do so, otherwise sit.
• Out of respect do not to receive Communion, according to local custom, and only if you wish, you may approach the altar with your arms crossed over your chest to receive a blessing.

How can i respectfully evesdrop on a Catholic service?
TX_Colleges_Nov 2011_1542

I kind of want to go and have a sticky beak at a cathedral mass. I'm an atheist so i'd feel guilty taking part when i wasn't a believer, it seems kinda blasphemous? I wouldn;t take communion etc. of course. But I suppose i should sit and stand at the rights times? any ideas, i imagine they wouldn't mind me comming along for a look? they seem pretty "open door"?

Nobody checks IDs at the door. Anyone is welcome. As for the sitting and standing, etc., just do what those around you are doing -- except that when everyone kneels at the Consecration, you're not required to do so and may just remain seated unless you feel odd about it. You already know not to go up for Communion, but it's very likely that there will be others who remain seated then too. That includes Catholics who, for one reason or another, know they shouldn't receive at that time.

There's usually a missalette, either in the pews or as you enter, that has the prayers and responses in it. You needn't do either but it can help you keep up with what's going on.

If you do go to a Mass out of curiosity, plan on staying for the whole thing as a matter of courtesy. Just taking a peek by popping in and then popping out whenever you figure you've seen enough would be noticed, and perhaps taken as an offense.

What is the difference between a Presbyterian service and a Catholic mass?
TX_Colleges_Nov 2011_1554

I'm a Presbyterian. My dad decided to become one like my mom, as he was raised a Catholic. All of his side of the family is Catholic. I was curious as to what differences there are between a typical mass and the Presbyterian service I'm used to.

The central difference is that Catholics believe that the Eucharist (Communion) is the actual Body Blood Soul and Divinity of Christ.

These Bible Verses are the heart of the Differences:
Gospel of John 6:35-71

Mt 26:26
Lk 22:17
1 Cor 10:16
1 Cor 11:23-29
Ex 12:8
Jn 1:29
1 Cor 2:14-3:4

Major significant differences.

  • Service Economy « The American Catholic

One often hears polemics against the fact that our country is now dominated by the “service economy”. It is one of those phrases that gives a strong impression, yet is oddly difficult to pin down.

If I may be indulged in an open-ended post:

    1) How would you define the “service economy”? (with examples)

    2) Is the service economy new, or merely expanded/changed, versus what you would consider a more traditional time? (Whether that is 100 years ago or 500 years ago.)

    3) Is it a problem that the service economy is so large, and if so why?

To me, “Service Economy”, or “Service Industry” is as opposed to manufacturing”". 60 Years ago, when manufacturing was a large part of the over all U.S. economy. Before the world economy became so powerful, driving American manufacturing to foreign countries, where wages were lower, in order to meet the price competition, the highest wages were in the manufacturing sector. In search of profits, the American economy turned to other industries. One of the industries that offered increasing personal and corporate income is the financial industries. In my mind, this was a tragedy. The finance industry produces profit through the use of the savings of other people. This can go on only so long, until all the available savings have been totally consumed by the financial industry. I liken it to the Biblical “Money Changers”, and lawyers. Neither of these actually “create” anything but wealth for the bankers, investment advisers, sales staff, stock brokers, and government administrators (bureaucrats). Other than that, there are many true “service”industries; such as janitorial, yard maintenance and repair work. These service industries include those tasks that the everyday worker once performed for himself, and have always been traditionally low-paying. While 60 or more years ago, there were true “custodial”workers, whose jobs were not so much to create goods, but to conserve what we had already created.

Pope#39;s Way of the Cross: 2010 service focuses on essentials of ...

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Instead of sharp commentary on current social ills or controversies, the meditations for Pope Benedict XVI's Way of the Cross service this year were a pared-down catechesis on the essentials of the Christian faith.

Even the meditations' author said some might find the straightforward text surprising given that he is normally very outspoken and often addresses events unfolding in Italy and in the church.

Retired Italian Cardinal Camillo Ruini was a leading voice of the church in the last two decades as he served as head of the Italian bishops' conference from 1991 to 2006 and as papal vicar of the Diocese of Rome from 1991 to 2008.

But the 79-year-old cardinal said he wanted to keep the commentary and prayers for the Good Friday evening service at Rome's Colosseum simple and to the point.
