What is the best way within Catholic spirituality to fight laziness in oneself?
Candles in the church

I am a Catholic, very prone to laziness, especially with regard to housework. I also fight depression, but can't blame it all on the depression. I have no spiritual sloth, and actively avoid spending more time in prayer than in housework, reminding myself that my housework is a very important spiritual work. But my body feels very fatigued and I give up easily.
But I am losing ground.

Housework can get really overwhelming if you let it build up. I struggle with that myself!

What I have found best to do is to ask the Blessed Mother for assistance. I also have a sort of mental schedule. I know I will do 1-2 loads of laundry every day but Sunday (unless there is a laundry "emergency!"), I will wash dishes every day, and clean up the kitchen counters & stove every day. Then I also have a room assigned to every day. Like on Mondays, it's the living room. After the kids are in bed, I'll look it over carefully and I'll figure out what needs to be done. Usually it's just picking up, but sometimes it's also cleaning a spot on a window or dusting if it was forgotten over the weekend. I think in terms of "spot cleaning," actually, because it helps me -- cleaning is exhausting, but spot-cleaning is doable.

On Saturdays, we have our big cleaning day and the whole family is involved. My 4- and 5-year-olds pick up, dust and use spray-cleaner on the stoves, windows, french doors and mirrors. My 8-yr-old takes out trash, cleans the half-bath with clorox wipes, tidies book and toy shelves, and swiffers floors (I sweep first). My husband vaccums all the floors and furniture, and either he or I will clean the other bathroom & scrub both toilets, and then I mop the kitchen and bathroom floors, the dining room hardwoord floor, and once in a while the living room hardwood floor if it needs it. One Saturday a month, I clean the girls' room with their help and another Saturday, I clean our son's room with his help. The rest of the time, we just make them pick up every night before bed so it never gets awful.

Once in the spring and once sometime in the fall, I actually take a day off work to do the big stuff -- blinds and curtains, taking down or putting up storm windows, moving all the furniture and deep-cleaning all the floors, and as I move through the rooms, I purge stuff that we don't use or want any more (all donated to Catholic Social Services if it's good enough to use). The less stuff in the house, the easier it is to clean, believe me! But it's easier to do when nobody is home but me.

I gotta tell you, though, my house is never *spotless* and that's okay. It's what I would call "clean" most of the time and "very clean" after Saturday cleaning day, but not perfect. I guess I have lower standards than some people, but if I tried to make it perfect, I would never, ever, accomplish anything.

Well, I'm playing on the computer instead of sweeping, so I'd better get going. Good luck to you and may God bless your efforts.

Why was the question about the top contributor being Catholic in Religion and Spirituality removed?
Santa Pau

I didn't think it was offensive.

I don't know what the question was, so I'm not able to answer with full comprehension, but I do know that there are some members here who are very much NOT proud of the fact that the top answerer is Catholic. there's one user who's sole effortseems to be to pass him up as top user, but his accounts keep getting banned because he's not exactly posting answers in a Christian manner, if you know what I mean.

So questions about him tend to die rather quickly because some people don't want that fact acknowledged.

What is Christian Spirituality when it comes to the Catholic Religion?
Young man raising folded hands against a blue sky

How does one understand Christian Spirituality?

Serious answers only please!
Thanks!

It depends upon the person. For all Catholics our goal is to die to ourselves a little more each day so that Christ can live more fully in us. How we do that will depend upon the person.

Just as Christ's body has many parts and the Holy Spirit gives many gifts, each Catholic's spiritual journey is different. For many Catholics their spirituality is marked by their sense of justice and service to the poor.

There is the Lectio Divina is a Benedictine prayer form based on praying with Sacred Scripture. Lectio Divina has four "moments": Lectio (Reading Scripture), Meditatio (Reflection on the Word), Oratio (Praying), and Contemplatio (Silently listening to God).

For others it is an examination of one's life, discerning the will of God, and living the Resurrection.

These are not the only expressions of spirituality you will find in Catholics and many combine different aspects to express their spirituality.

Catholic spirituality is based on the life and teaching of Jesus Christ, who is the founder of the Catholic Church.

Define Catholic Spirituality....

I'm very new to this and learning step by step as you can tell.

Serious answer only.. k?
Thanks! :)

There are many different forms of Catholic Spirituality.
Eastern and Western traditions make up the wholeness of the Catholic Church.
In the Western traditions there are many different religious orders such as the Franciscans, Benedictines, Carmelites and Jesuits. Each have their own form of spirituality. Spiritual practices, traditions, etc.
The same in the Eastern traditions.
This is ALL part of Catholic Spirituality. In fact the word catholic means "according to the wholeness" or as some say "universal".

So there is no easy answer to your question. You might want to talk to your priest more about this.
