Gay/Lesbian Question as relates to Catholic teaching?
Retreat on beach

I'm honestly curious, does the Catholic church "ban" gay marriage itself? My understanding is that Catholics do not believe in sex before marriage, but would that really apply if the gay/lesbian couple is married? Is there a specific teaching that forbids gay marriage or gay acts? What is their reasoning behind this?

The Catholic Church believes that God himself is the author of marriage and has created it for one man and one woman.

The Church further teaches that being homosexual is not a sin but that all single people (heterosexual, bisexual, and homosexual) are called to celibacy.

What is the Catholic teaching on abortion?
On Site Programs

and why does the Catholic Catechism favor "self-observation and use of infertile periods"?

+ Abortion +

Catholics believe that from the moment of conception until natural death, each human being is endowed by God with dignity and rights. Therefore abortion is viewed as the murder of an innocent and defenseless human being.

You shall not kill. (Ex 20:13; cf. Deut 5:17)

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you. (Jer 1:5; cf. Job 10:8-12; Ps 22:10-11)

My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately wrought in the depths of the earth. (Ps 139:15)

Early Church writings: You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish. (Didache 2, 2: SCh 248, 148; cf. Ep. Barnabae 19, 5: PG 2, 777; Ad Diognetum 5, 6: PG 2, 1173; Tertullian, Apol. 9: PL 1, 319-320)

+ Natural Family Planning +

The Catholic Church believes that God allows natural forms of birth control.

Judeo-Christian tradition has taught for thousands of years:
1. Single people should be celibate.
2. Married people should be faithful to each other (adultery is wrong).
3. Married couples should welcome God's gift of children and, therefore, artificial birth control is against the will of God.

What is catholic teaching about competition?
Sabbaticals St Lucia2

is competition good or bad in catholic??? I think It's bad in catholic value because competition is comparing person with person and make one feel proud and make another feel lacking and so bad.

<<What is catholic teaching about competition? is competition good or bad in catholic???>>

Theologically, there is nothing inherently wrong with competition in and of itself. However, those involved in forms of competition must not cheat.

<<I think It's bad in catholic value because competition is comparing person with person and make one feel proud and make another feel lacking and so bad.>>

Life itself is a competition of sorts, or a combination of competitions.
In life we win some and we lose some. It doesn't matter so much so long as we have the Wisdom to allow the experience to make us better than what we were before.

The idea that competition is bad because there has to be losers, and those losers may "feel bad" is not a theologically based assertion. It's a politically correct assertion.

What are the chances that God & Heaven really exists according to Catholic teaching?
Sr Angella at Franciscan Institute

I'm Catholic but sometimes it sounds so far-fetched that a Christian God really exists with all the suffering and evil going on in the world.

What are the chances that our souls will actually go to a place called Heaven?

I just had this discussion with my mom, who has recently become atheist. I believe that human free will causes the majority of suffering in the world. I believe that even in cases of natural disaster, it was human's choice to park his trailer in tornado alley or build so close to the beach. So, I do not think suffering is a punishment from God, but a result of free will. Someone chose to drink and drive, someone chose to smoke cigarettes, etc. I do believe that there is eternal life waiting for the believers.

Here is some background so that you can research your own answers.

The seven major themes of Catholic Social Teaching are:
• Life and Dignity of the Human Person
• Call to Family, Community, and Participation
• Rights and Responsibilities
• Option for the Poor and Vulnerable
• The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers
• Solidarity
• Care for God's Creation

Mirror of Justice: Catholic Teaching and Big Government

March 25, 2010 Catholic Teaching and Big Government

I appreciate the comments, both posted to the Mirror of Justice and by email, on my continuing series on what I believe are the serious flaws in the health care legislation enacted this week, as well as my hopeful suggestion that the potential is still out there to do it right ( Post 1 and Post 2 ).  (I'll post the third in the series, on the fiscal implications of the health care bill, this afternoon.)  I especially welcome my colleague Rob Vischer's direct engagement, asking "is the Church opposed to big government?"

I am tempted to respond simply, well, if the Church isn't yet opposed to big government, it should be!  But the better answer is more nuanced than that, even if one believes, as I do, that our Catholic-grounded belief in the dignity of each human person and in the liberty that God bequeaths to all of us should lead to a presumption against government solutions when adequate alternatives are available.
