Can someone who is not Catholic enter a university with such affiliations?
St. Johns Abbey

I'm particularly asking about Loyola Marymount University in LA. I read that it is a Roman Catholic university but I was wondering do they admit only such students? I like LMU and consider applying there but I am an Orthodox Christian from Europe. Is religion a problem?

I'm a faculty member at LMU, I've worked there for 19 years, and I'm Jewish. That should tell you something! Yes, almost half of the students at LMU are not Catholic these days, so you would fit in very well. One of my colleagues is Orthodox Christian from Bulgaria, and she likes the parallels between her religion and Catholicism. It is not a problem at all.

Can I go to a catholic university if I am not catholic?
A crowd to watch Peter Kreeft

I am looking into the University of Dallas in Dallas, Texas.
It says that it is a catholic university.
I am southern baptist.
Can I still go to this school?

sure.... just realize that there will be religion classes or other things that will be taking place that will be rather different than your Baptist upbringing. also, if they are not funded through anything but themselves.... there may be different rules and regulations because they don't have to follow federal guidelines (for example, allowing the student health center to talk about abortions might be one thing). as long as you are open to that.... head on in for a great education!

What is a good catholic university with a good music program?
CA_College_Oct2011_1304

I'm looking into colleges and have decided to go with a catholic university with a good music programs. I was looking into Notre Dame but I dont know how good there music program is (band program)

College of the Holy Cross (west of Boston) is one of the top academic colleges of all the nation's Catholic colleges with an academic raring of 98 by the Princeton Review. It also has a very strong music department and they offer several music scholarships. It is the oldest Catholic college in all of New England.

What are the pros and cons of attending a Catholic University?
CA_College_Oct2011_1311

I'm thinking of attending a Catholic University...I'm not the most religious person to know but i respect other peoples morals, values, ideas, and beliefs. They have a great business program and a friend of mine says they have a great atmosphere...but i still want to know the ups and downs. Thanks!

Depending on the university,

+ Great supportive religious atmosphere
+ Generally more morally conservative
+ Tends to be a smaller, more close-knit community
+ A lot of service opportunities

- Can be frustrating when people appear hypocritical - professing one thing and failing to live up to it themselves.
- Can feel exclusive if you're not Catholic or religious.
- May be more conservative or restrictive than you'd like.

It really depends on the place, though. I think a slightly larger college with a more diverse population would be optimal since a small, religiously affiliated college can be tough for non like-mined individuals. Check out their website, talk to your friend more, see if you can find other people there and get their opinions on it. Good luck!

Catholic University of America Honors Program?
CA_College_Oct2011_1307

I applied for early action and got into Catholic University of America and now I want to do the honors program. Since my acceptance letter didn't say anything about the honors program am I not in? Or do I have to apply separately? Basically, how can I get into the honors program?

You should apply for it. Had you been part of the program the acceptance letter would have mentioned it./

  • John Paul the Great Catholic University in San Diego | A.ngel.us

There are a lot of good universities where a student can learn about media production, and there are a handful of Catholic universities really dedicated to the teachings of the Church.   Now there is a university that is both.  John Paul the Great University in San Diego, California is offering students a chance to learn the tools and techniques of modern media while within a nurturing environment of Catholic culture and fellowship.  I am excited to see what this school can become and the good works it can do.

From their website:  “John Paul the Great Catholic University is a visionary teaching institution focused on and dedicated to molding students into future innovators and creators, leaders and entrepreneurs. Students have the opportunity to acquire a deep and personal knowledge of Jesus Christ. Catholic ethical, moral, and social values provide a guiding compass for everything we do.”

I was honored to be present for the First Annual Dean Hoge Memorial Lecture at Catholic University on March 24. It was delivered by Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas of Tucson, Ariz., vice-president of the U.S. bishops' conference. Jerry Filteau’s account of that evening provides a good summary of what he said.

I want to talk about what he did say. I knew Dean Hoge when he headed the Life Cycle Institute and discussed his ongoing research interests with him on occasion. He focused much of his work on Catholic priests, but one of his major concerns was mandatory celibacy for priests. Yet Bishop Kicanas omitted that issue in his address. It’s not hard to figure out why he omitted it. It’s a “hot button” issue, and the Vatican shows no sign of wanting to change the rules. Bishops like Kicanas probably don’t want to raise any eyebrows in the Vatican.
