what was the year of vocations in the Catholic church and its results?
What year did this happen in and what are the statistics for vocations of ppl joining to be priests in that year, where can I find them?
Ant stats on falling vocations etc.? pls cite where these are from.
While I don't recall anything specifically entitled the "year of vocations," I know that this year, starting on June 19, 2009, has been dedicated as the "year for priests." That's probably what you're referring to.
Statistics aren't in yet for 2008 or 2009, but in 2004 there were 405,891 priests worldwide. In 2005 there were 406,411. In 2006 there were 407,242. In 2007 there were 408,024. So the absolute number of priests (and, incidentally, seminarians) is increasing. The absolute number (though not percentage) of Catholics is also increasing, however, and at a slightly higher rate. This means that overall each priest is now responsible for a greater number of Catholics. We would like this Catholics/priest ratio to go down, if it could. In two years' time, when the 2009 information becomes available, you should look not only to see that the number of priests is increasing (after all, the whole world's population is increasing) but also that it is increasing at a higher rate than it has been and in proportion to the number of Catholics worldwide.
2004: 1.098 billion Catholics = 2,705.160 Catholics/priest
2005: 1.115 billion Catholics = 2,743.53 Catholics/priest
2006: 1.131 billion Catholics = 2,777.22 Catholics/priest
2007: 1.147 billion Catholics = 2,811.11 Catholics/priest
A video to encourage prayer and discernment for Vocations to the consecrated life.
Should Roman Catholics who are in discernment about consecrated life and looking at vocations possibilities have any hesitation about exploring Eastern Rite religious communities? Would such a person have to go through extra steps to be accepted into that church before proceeding, or would they go in just like any other postulant?
I think one problem you would have to be aware of is that most Eastern rite Catholics celebrate their liturgies in languages which would be unfamiallier to all but a very few westerners. This could be a significant impediment unless you are a very quick learner.
I can't find this in the catechism. Also, if you know of another source please let me know.
Thank you.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church discusses vocation including the laity in paragraphs 871 and following: http://www.nccbuscc.org/catechism/text/p t1sect2chpt3art9p4.htm
With love in Christ.
I'm divorced; my children are all grown up and financially independent; I've had 16 years of Roman Catholic Education. I originally came to Thailand as a Jesuit Lay Volunteer Missionary and live in Thailand now. Now that I'm free from parental responsibilities etc., I believe God is calling me to some form of the Roman Catholic Clergy vocation. My Bachelor's degree is from Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass 1968; my Master is in Education from USC, L.A. Cal 1974. I've been running my own tutorial service in Bangkok since 1986.
I'm in excellent health.
Why not become a Deacon of your parish? Deacons can be married with children.
Every time I attend Mass at OLC, the Franciscan leads a Prayer for Vocations.
Are the type of guys that usually become priests instead "teaching English" in Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia?
Would the Romans do better if they eliminated girls as acolytes, thus having the Priesthood become attractive again to their traditional base?
Fr. Joseph, I am sorry someone used this question to attack through their answer.
People vileness never ceases to amaze me.
It's probably their benefit plan...........not enough sick time perhaps.

Landmark Study on U.S. Catholic Vocations Reveals Dramatic Changes
- Study surveyed 4,000 in training or final vows in U.S. religious communities since 1993
The demographic composition and preferred lifestyle of religious communities in the U.S. are undergoing dramatic changes according to a first-of-its-kind survey of newer members.
The landmark “Study of Recent Vocations to Religious Life” was undertaken by the Center for the Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA), a Georgetown University-based research center, on behalf of the National Religious Vocation Conference (NRVC), a professional association of religious vocation directors, based in Chicago. The study sought to determine best practices for religious institutes in attracting and retaining new members.
Holy Cross Brother Paul Bednarczyk, executive director of the National Religious Vocation Conference (NRVC), applauded the findings.
