Catholics,
I found the following information about praying the rosary. Do you think this is true?
In 456 AD, Hindus are thought to have introduced the concept of praying with beads to the world. The earliest reference to a rosary (boberkhas) is in their "Jain Canon" (456 AD). These boberkhas had various numbers of beads 6,9,12,18,36 (any sub-multiple of 108). Islam (610 AD) uses a rosary of 99 beads, one for each of the names of God. Buddhists have 108 prayer beads on the string. The Rosary is of pagan origin and no Christian prior to 1000 AD used beads to pray.
Catholics pray repetitive words with Rosary Beads that were first invented in 1090 AD, by "Peter the Hermit" and made popular by St. Dominic in 1208 AD. Catholics believe that Mary appeared to St. Dominic in 1208 AD, at the church of Prouille and revealed the Rosary Beads to him. From this time, Catholics prayed 15 sets of 10 consecutive "hail Marys" in a row (150 times), in the Rosary.
However, in 2003 AD, Pope John Paul added a new set of Mysteries, so now it is 20 sets of 10 "Hail Marys", (200 times in the Rosary, in total.) Catholics will vainly appeal to Psalm 136 that alternates the same phrase 26 times with 26 different blessings God gives us.
Christ gives us instruction on how to pray. Notice in Matthew 6:7-15, he specifically states for us to NOT use vain repetitions.
But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Kevin, isn't "ingrain" somewhat like brain washing? I pray from my heart. I don't need to repeat someone else's prayer. God wants us to pray from our heart not our minds.
Repetition is not saying the same prayer now and then. It's saying the same prayer over and over in one sitting. Jesus did not keep repeating himself. He may have said something more than once, but never 10, 20, 50, 100's or even 1000's of times. That's what repetitive prayer is.
Jesus Prayed to the Father 3 times in his agony, Father remove this cup.
Why did he repeat himself?
CONTEMPLATION.
Hello everyone! I created this video to help anyone who wants to pray the Rosary. It is a beautiful prayer to Jesus through Mary. :) Enjoy ...
I've been told catholics pray the rosary to go to heaven. is this true? Do you believe your sarifice and good works get you to heaven? Think about this, you are God you told people how to act and they disobey not only that they curse you not only that they try to prove you wrong. They laugh at you, but you forgive them and give your ONLY son as a SACRIFICE for all the wrong these people have done. When you face the Lord do you believe your sacrifice matches God's? No amount of prayer will get you to heaven. Ephesians 2 8:9 It is by GRACE of God you are saved, THROUGH FAITH. Not by your good deeds so that no man may boast.
What is your answer catholics?
they pray the rosary....Because the priests told them to. the bible didnt said so.

I try to pray everyday. Sometimes I fall asleep praying though. And sometimes I pray throughout the day (on the bus, walking to school, etc.)
Daily
After an interview I saw of Anne Rice, in which she stated she doesn't get out of bed in the morning until she has completed her Rosary,
I adopted the same practice.
It works great; I get it done , my day starts right and my day runs smoother.

THERE ARE FIFTEEN PROMISES OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN TO CHRISTIANS WHO FAITHFULLY PRAY THE ROSARY
1 To all those who shall pray my Rosary devoutly, I promise my special protection and great graces.
2 Those who shall persevere in the recitation of my Rosary will receive some special grace.
3 The Rosary will be a very powerful armor against hell; it will destroy vice, deliver from sin and dispel heresy.
4 The rosary will make virtue and good works flourish, and will obtain for souls the most abundant divine mercies. It will draw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
5 Those who trust themselves to me through the Rosary will not perish.
6 Whoever recites my Rosary devoutly reflecting on the mysteries, shall never be overwhelmed by misfortune. He will not experience the anger of God nor will he perish by an unprovided death. The sinner will be converted; the just will persevere in grace and merit eternal life.
7 Those truly devoted to my Rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church.
8 Those who are faithful to recite my Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plenitude of His graces and will share in the merits of the blessed.

all these promises are true and can be counted on

the work of perfection of your soul is not your job to do, but God's alone. Just like we don't save ourself, God helps us by his grace.
Your first answer said where is that in the bible? But if you are catholic you should know that everything is not in the bible, we have many traditions too, of which St.Paul spoke about and told us to hold tight to them. your job is just simply say the rosary keeping your heart and mind on the mysteries on which you are meditating on. The bible tells us that the one who is saved is the one who runs the race--to the finish line , the one who perserveres to the end.
I used to hate saying the rosary, but I decided to start the 54 day novena of petition and thanksgiving. I've been saying it every day since October, prayers have been answered, not all of them but I know if I keep saying it , only good can come from it. What really inspiried me was when I heard father corapi's tape on the power of the holy rosary. He explained things going on his life and how it was his mother faithfully praying it for her son John corapi (before he became a priest) and if you can get your hands on it, you too will be inspired to start praying it. We can't see the spiritual effects from our prayers, but in faith we continue on, not seeing but beleiving, and if we struggle in our faith, say the prayer Lord I beleive help my unbelief. Don't just say the rosary and then look for signs of favor every where, but say it and be at peace, Jesus told us, "be anxious for nothing", pray hope and don't worry, was Padre Pio's mantra. It's hard, theres no question, but look at it like this, if it were easy, everyone would be doing it. The truth is, people leave their christianity at the door of the work place, dont think Mary's rosary is without the power you need in your life, Padre Pio called it his weapon, just say it, and keep on saying it until you have gotten through 7 days , and then 7 more and on and on. I love to say the rosary with an audio. they have them online. Father corapi has a virtual rosary on his web site, and http://feeds.feedburner.com/rosarycast http://www.rosaryarmy.com

well, as a practicing catholic, I disagree with you totally.
I love what you wrote. I'll check out Fr Corapi because he's an amazing priest. The rosary isn't one of my daily devotions but I do enjoy praying it. Prior to my conversion, without knowing how I prayed the rosary one night with the Sisters of the Most Blessed Sacrament on EWTN. Although I don't usually feel the effects of prayer, I did that night and I sometimes wonder if Mary interceded for me in my conversion.
How many time per day/week Catholic peoples pray with this prayer? what the meaning of the beads? and please give me the history and meaning of this prayer?
the beads tell them how many times to say the prayer...
the bible says not to speak repetitious prayers though.
*shrug*
i think they have like 5 beads and then a different bead and they say the hail mary 5 times, and then the other bead, they say a different prayer.
i cant remember its been years since ive done it/seen it.

Rosary Reflections – The Sorrowful Mysteries « Almost There
My favorite mysteries of the Rosary are the joyful mysteries. I’ve always liked happy stories. Chris’s favorite mysteries are the sorrowful mysteries. When he first told me this, I didn’t quite understand. They are hard for me to pray and think about. It’s uncomfortable to dwell on this deepest of all tragedies. Then a couple things happened to change my perspective and draw me into the depths of the sorrowful mysteries.
Chris sent me a link to a blog post written by Fr. Dwight Longenecker about the difference between Protestant and Catholic understanding of the life of Christ. In essence, he describes the liberal Protestant approach as focusing on Jesus as a good person and nearly ignoring his death. The conservative evangelicals, he says, focus on the redeeming sacrifice of Christ’s death and nearly ignore his ministry beforehand. All this rang true to me, consistent with my experience. Then Fr. Longenecker says:
...Holy Week#39;s Sore Loser: Christ#39;s Victory Over Sin Chafes Forces of ...
So the Christian celebration of the Lord´s passion, death and resurrection is accompanied by the yearly ritual of Christ-bashing in the mainstream media. You will recall that just a year ago Newsweek Magazine celebrated Easter with a cover story titled “The Decline and Fall of Christian America,” while the Discovery channel aired a documentary that portrayed Jesus as a political opportunist. This Lent, the attacks have been more pointed, targeting Christ´s vicar, the Pope. The last few weeks have seen a frenzy of accusations against the clergy, the bishops and the Pope himself regarding cases of sex abuse in Germany, Ireland and the United States. The strategy has been that of pre-Geneva Convention warlords: fire as many shots as possible into the air and hope that something will hit the mark. Since the media are held to no rules of engagement, innocent casualties and wanton destruction are welcomed as tactics to weaken the adversary. To the secular minded it seems inexplicable that the Holy See doesn´t leap to its own defense, brandishing sheaves of files, swiftly rebutting each accusation, and decrying this defamation from the cupola of St. Peter´s. This is not Rome´s way. Not when the Landsknechts sacked Rome in 1527, forcing Pope Clement VII to flee for his life; not when 86-year-old Pope Pius VI was trundled off by Napoleon and driven around Europe until he died; and not when the Italians claimed Rome and drove Pope Pius IX into exile within the Vatican walls. There are two main reasons for this. For all their pretensions, newspapers are not a court of law. They are bound to no rules when considering evidence, nor is there a process for establishing the worthiness of witnesses for the prosecution. They can pick and choose what to publish and what to silence, or simply ignore. The media´s self-styled tribunals bring more sales for the editors and more reasons and resources to keep attacking the Church, but little in the way of justice.
