When does Catholic Lent start and end?
and in a nut shell, what is the full purpose of it?
Lent starts on Ash Wednesday.
It is a season of penance to be marked by prayer, almsgiving( charisty), and fasting. In early church history it was a time of purification for those wishing to join the church. It was also a time of purification for those who's sins had separated them from the church and who wanted to once again partake of the Lord's Supper.
According to the Roman Catholic tradition the season of Lent officially ends at the sunset on Holy Thursday. This was made official during Vatican Council II. The Holy Thursday Liturgy marks the beginning of the Triduum.(trid oo um), which is Latin for three days. The Triduum ends with sundown on Holy Saturday as the Easter Vigil begins the Easter season.
The Liturgies of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Saturday are seen as one celebration. There is no dismissal rite for the Holy Thursday and Good Friday liturgies. During this time the faithful are encouraged to observe the "Paschal Fast" Fasting on Good Friday is required but it is recommended to carry the fast through until the Easter vigil.
Iamacatholic: Although most of the time you give correct information you repeatedly answer this question wrong. Would you please check your facts on this? I would suggest reading "The Order of Prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours and Celebration of the Eucharist". This is normally referred to as the Ordo.

I'm a catholic and with lent starting today, it thought it would a good question to ask. I always noticed that they never passed out wine during lent... Is there a reason why? Thanks!
The Catholic church has never handed out wine. It's been Transubstantiated into the blood of Jesus, remember?
I'm catholic and i want to know how long i've gone without candy. I'm a chocolate fanatic and i gave up candy for lent
since Feb 21, Ash Wednesday. 40 days not counting Sundays so a total of 46 days you will have gone without it by Easter.
The pillars of Lent (what you are suppose to do) are
Sacrifice (giving up something)
Prayer (enhancing your prayer life)
Almsgiving (acts of charity)
Did you do all three or just give up candy ? Because that is the least important pillar.
To be honest, I've never fasted for Lent before, but I want to for 2009. I'm a bit confused so if someone can help me out with my question, that would be great. Also another question: Do you have to give up meat or can you give up something else...like smoking or cursing? Does that work too? Thanks.
Catholics (at least 14 years old) in the United States are obliged to abstain from the eating of meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays during the season of Lent.
Catholics (from 18 to 60 years old) are also obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday.
Self-imposed observance of fasting on all weekdays of Lent is strongly recommended. This is where people also give up chocolate, sarcasm, or something else for Lent.

With love in Christ.
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent.
In the UK in 2006 this was 1st March.
It is always 46 days before Easter Sunday.

Southern Illinois Catholic: Lent Question
This blog was created to discuss the Roman Catholic Church in the Belleville Illinois Diocese and the Church in general. Sometimes economic and political matters enter in, generally with Catholic consideration. Peggy is responsible for all posts. Comments are currently moderated. You may contact me by email at plr0617@gmail.com. Peggy is a member of Catholics Against Obama (though no such formal group appears to exist). So, since Lent ended last night, does any one here break out on Holy Thursday the cholocate or ice cream that one might give up for Lent? Is it permissible to do so? I have never broken the "fast" until Easter Eve, when we celebrate with my dad and his wife, color eggs and so forth. Before that tradition when we moved here, I did wait until Easter to break the "fast." During this time of the Easter Triduum (from the Mass of the Lord's Supper until the Easter Vigil) the Church strongly urges that all, especially all Catechumens, keep the paschal fast. "The elect are to be advised that on Holy Saturday they should refrain from their usual activities, spend their time in prayer and reflection, and as far as they can, observe a fast"
Catholic Guilt? It Must Be Lent... - Life: As I See It
Today marks the beginning of the most solemn and depressing week imaginable when you are the proud card carrying member of the Catholic Church; Palm Sunday. Nothing puts an exclamation point on "catholic guilt" more than the season of Lent will. Doesn't matter what the weatherman says--Holy Week is always a cloudy, miserable week...even Mother Nature thinks we should suffer.
Come Good Friday, even if the sun is shining all morning, at approximately 11:59 a.m. the clouds roll in with thunder and lightning sure to follow. And, like clockwork, at 3:01 p.m. the clouds always part with the sun peaking out as if to say, hey, it's going to be okay. We always saw this as kids from inside--no one was allowed outside from noon until three...went against the rules. We'd steal glimpses out of the window while we were kneeling in silent prayer.
