list of catholic saints

I am writing a 10 page paper on Roman Catholicism, and how Italy shifted from Roman gods to Roman Catholicism, but I cannot find a list of saints that actually shows what their purpose is, just their history. I need help finding a list that tells me some of the saints and why they are prayed to. Of if you know a few saints and why they're prayed to and want to post them, that would be a GREAT help!

I notice that the Saint Index on http://www.catholic.org/saints/stindex.p hp is missing saints from the Gnostic bible - I'm wondering where other lists of saints might be?

Gnosticism, which predates Christianity by a few centuries, teaches:
• The physical world is bad
• Only spirituality is good
• Humans are trapped in between
• Salvation comes from knowledge (gnosis means knowledge)
• Elitism, only a chosen few will be saved

All of which go against the teaching of Christianity
• The physical world is good. God said so in Genesis.
• Humans are physical and spiritual beings and both natures are good
• Salvation comes from grace and not merit
• God wants all to be saved

I have never heard of either of those and I can't find them on the website that I usually use to look up saints. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
