Civil marriage before catholic marriage. How does this work? ?
The Marriage of Mary and Joseph

My fiance are having a catholic ceremony in May. Our reasoning for the catholic ceremony is really for our family and we our both catholic although I am not really a practicing catholic. I just lost my job and we need to get married ASAP so I can get on his insurance. So we were just going to go to the courthouse for a civil marriage and then still have our catholic service. How does this work? Will the church find out if we have a civil service first?

Yes, the church will find out when they tell you to get a marriage license, and you already have one that is signed and says you are married.

If you don't live together and don't have sex in between the time of your civil marriage and your Catholic wedding, it should be no big deal. Just TELL THE PRIEST -- don't try to hide it.

Also, you don't have to get married ASAP to get on his insurance -- you can do COBRA until the wedding. U.S. employers are required by law to offer it to you. And you could also get private insurance -- call your insurance rep for information.

What the hell does a catholic priest know about marriage or any real adult relationship?
Retro Save the Date Olive Oil favors

if you want a divorce from a catholic marriage you have to go to counseling with a man who has never even had a sexual relationship(supposedly)

Yeah, seems pretty screwey...kinda like a social worker fresh out of college with no kids.

How many gay marriage ceremonies have been performed in Mass in Catholic Churches?
Love Potions Maple Syrup wedding favors

It seems like the only thing anyone can say in opposition to gay marraige is that it would force churches to perform those ceremonies. OK, we have a great test to see if that's actually an issue.
1. Mass legalized gay marriage.
2. Catholic church is opposed to gay mariage
3. How many gay marraiges have been forced on the Catholic Church in Mass?
That's Massachusetts....not the act of Mass

Scroll down a little and you see this exact claim. This is about the 10th time I've seen it on here...
It can't possibly happen RLP as everyone else on here knows. Churches can marry whoever they want and sure as heck can have denominational limits on who they marry.

The answer is ZERO of course.

None that I have heard about but I also have never heard anyone claim that churches would be forced to do anything either..

Can a civil judge annul a Catholic Marriage?
Love Forever canning jar theme wedding favors

How can it be that a civil judge can annul a Catholic marriage?

Because marriage is governed by civil law and requires a civil law license!! Whilst churches can carry out marriage services the person doing so must be authorized by civil law and the marriage must conform completely to civil law!!

So no church has anything to do with the regulation of marriage and if they fail in anyway to comply with civil law the marriage is null and void and in all probability they would have committed a criminal offense!!!

• Marriage Vows •

I (...), take you (...) to be my husband/wife.
I promise to be true to you
in good times and in bad,
in sickness and in health.
I will love you and honor you
all the days of my life.

Or

I (...), take you (...) for my lawful husband/wife,
to have and to hold,
from this day forward,
for better, for worse,
for richer, for poorer,
in sickness and in health,
until death do us part.

Or

In the name of God,
I (...) take you (...) to be my husband/wife,
to have and to hold
from this day forward,
for better, for worse,
for richer, for poorer,
in sickness and in health,
to love and to cherish,
until we are parted by death.
This is my solemn vow.

The bride and groom exchange the same vows and there is nothing about 'obeying.'

• Exchange of Rings •

(...), take this ring
as a sign of my love and fidelity.
In the name of the Father,
and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.

  • My marriage is just no fun anymore

I have been with my husband for 9 years now, he adopted my daughter and has helped me raise her as his own. She is 11. The first 4 years of our relationship was full with drama, fights, jealousy, and insecurities on both our parts. Then there was few years of greatness. We are doing fine, good jobs, great house all that type of stuff, but it seems like all we do is argue. He complains about everything, nothing is ever good enough for him. I have thought about leaving many times and what keeps me there is my daughter. She loves her Dad and I can't imagine making her go without, because I couldn't afford the lifestyle we have on my own. I know these aren't reasons to stay in a marriage, but I'm catholic and divorce just isn't an option when you have grown up Catholic....

The Georgetown Voice » Catholic Charities changes benefits after ...

Catholic Charities in the District of Columbia has enacted two significant employment policy changes in response to the District’s recent legalization of same-sex marriage. New employees will no longer be able to receive health benefits for their spouses and will be required to pledge that they will not violate the tenets of the Catholic Church.

Although new employees will not be able to provide health benefits to their spouses, they will still be covered under the new policy and be able to provide benefits to their children. According to Catholic Charities spokesperson Eric Salmi, the less than 10 percent of Catholic Charities’ 850 employees in the District who currently take advantage of spousal health benefits will continue receiving those benefits.

In addition to the change in spousal benefits, Catholic Charities added language to its hiring letter requiring all new employees to promise “not to violate the principles or tenets of the Church,” though Salmi said that this policy is not a direct response to the same-sex marriage legislation.
