It is the Eurcharist, ie. the holy communion which the priest , prayed over that ordinary looking wafer and by God's power turn them into holy communion. Its more than just a spiritual food to nourish baptised Catholics' soul in their journey towards God.
Its the most treasured in the Catholic Church as its the most visible form of supreme Gift from heaven and its the precious body and blood of our beloved Christ Himself.
And of all, its called holy communion, because when received in state of grace and without mortal sins, its a holy 'communion' with Christ Himself as we ate his body and blood.
I know its sound ridiculous but in the bible it stated that alot of his followers left after hearing that as they couldn't accept what Christ said : to eat his body and drink his blood. He could have stopped them but he let them go, as he can't give in as its a fact. And the Catholic Church still uphold it.
Do you see the police outside the Catholic Churches on Sunday arresting people for cannibalism? There's your answer.
By the way, I have been a vegetarian all my life and when I was a little girl taking communion, I had no problem realizing it was not really meat.

The Catholic Church claimed that the prayer was dictated to St. Gertrude the Great by Lord Jesus to release 1,000 souls from Purgatory EACH time it is said.
"Eternal Father, I offer Thee the most precious blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen."
That's interesting. I had never heard that before. I guess that is part od the idea, because if everyone said that prayer then there would be no souls in purgatory, therfore no point in purgatory etc.
Question is, if it does work, where do they go?
1) Papal infallibility
2) Marian theology (Mariolatry)
3) Confession and absolving of sins by priesthood
4) Infantile baptism
5) Catholic catechism's authoritativeness
I am a non-denominational Christian. I cannot possibly recognize the heretical dogmas that have infiltrated this supposed sect of Christianity. According to the doctrines of the Catholic church, the Pope is infallible (inerrable, errorless) to err when citing, defining, interpreting, recording, translating, etc. Christian scripture, doctrine, and moralistic teachings. Now, as you might realize by now, I find this theological concept to be a complete absurdity. No man is infallible. Case closed. Then we have Marian theology, or what I more appropriately deem Mariolatry. Mary ascending to Heaven without sin? Really? Where in the Bible is this recorded? Next, Christ's precious sanctifying blood cleanses and absolves our sins, NOT earthly priests. Infantile baptism is untenable. Finally, the Bible is the authority. Period!
I'm highly satisfied that you are answering with such poignant responses! Firstly, I need to address the first respondent. Indeed, you are incredibly uneducated if you contend that the Pope is imperfect, because that is not the definition of Papal Infallibility. For a succinct definition, please view:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papal_infal libility
The doctrine was fervently debated when instituted in 1870 and remains a contentious topic. Though only implemented once (in 1950, when Pope Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary as being an article of faith for Roman Catholics. Go figure!), it is undoubtedly a fallacy.
J, you say that you are amazed that I claim the Bible is the sole authority. Why?
Also, you challenge me to tell you where in the Bible does Jesus criticize other Jewish sects, claiming that "there is no passage." WOW. I am appalled by your unintelligence! Jesus contended with the Pharisees, Sadducees, and other Jewish sects of his time. This is extensively documented.
Disciple, I would first like to thank you for providing such an elaborative response, especially given the brusquely laconic replies which preceded yours. Frankly, I ran out of room (1000 character limit) for additional annotation. Now, I apologize if I came across as condescending, but I will not apologize for my solemn rebuke. Here is why. She asked me to cite a passage where Jesus criticized other Jewish sects. Then she rashly announced, "There is no passage," and that I need to "follow His (Jesus') lead." I find this offensive because, as a devout Christian and staunch upholder of the faith and a literal interpretation of the Bible, I am living the Way. Moreover, when someone is indeed uneducated regarding the topic at hand, disputatiously proclaiming prevarications, it is my earnest duty to "Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine." (2 Timothy 4:2)
J. should read Luke 11:37-54 for their proof of criticism.
St. Francis de Sales wrote:
If you wish to labor with fruit in the conversion of souls, you must pour the balsam of sweetness upon the wine of your zeal, that it may not be too fiery, but mild, soothing, patient, and full of compassion. For the human soul is so constituted that by rigor it becomes harder, but mildness completely softens it. Besides, we ought to remember that Jesus Christ came to bless good intentions, and if we leave them to His control, little by little He will make them fruitful.
Let the true peace of Christ be reflected in you.
(It was from VenomFangX when I asked him about the sacraments and stuff)...Personally, I think it's a bit harsh...the Catholic and Orthodox church are the only authentic churches in my eyes. Protestants took the Virgin Mary away from the child Christ and went out of their way in not taking the sacraments. God have mercy on us all!
I go to a baptist church.
Sacrements are NOT in The Bible.
<< Ephesians 2:8 >>
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God
Catholics use sacrements, which are a denial of the once and for all sacrifice of Christ Himself.
Catholicism is not the biblical faith that Jesus Christ taught. Catholicism is a works righteous system; it makes you 'do' things to earn your way to Heaven. Martin Luther challenged the Catholic Church with his 95-thesis, out-lining the importance of understanding justification by faith alone, not of religious works from the catholic system.
I am persuaded that the roman catholic church is the evil harlot mentioned in the book of Revelation chapter 17. It talks about an evil harlot from rome who has commit fornication with the world that sits on seven hills and is drunk with the blood of the saints, that is rich beyond measure, and robed in purple and scarlet with a golden. Rome has always been known as the city on seven hills, and the bishops and cardinals from the Vatican system dress in scarlet and purple, are rich beyond measure and arrayed with precious stones, and the pope has a golden cup. I have studied the roman catholic church, and most shocking of it's many departures from the Scriptures is the fact that the recent pope kissed the quran in public! That is pure spiritual fornication. Not to mention the vatican is one of the wealtheist establishments on Earth, and Jesus said
Matthew 19:23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
Not to mention, no pope was ever mentioned in The Bible (Peter was not a pope or a roman bishop). The papacy is a tradition of men, where the roman bishop is regarded as head of the church, which God condemns. The roman government was NEVER to have ANY authority in the church. The catholic church is satanic deception used to slander the good name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Many turn away from Christ because of the atrocities and bloodshed the catholic church is responsible for, such as the inquisition where all non-catholics were tortured to death by the hundreds of thousands.
Jesus told us to put down our swords and not kill anyone, but the catholic church has never had a history of obeying the Lord Jesus Christ. Imagine if I went and killed someone, and told everyone that you told me to do it! What a lie that would be; it is called slander. The catholic church is Satan's attempt the slander the Lord. Many of the things catholics do are strictly forbidden. Jesus said:
Matthew 23:9
Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.
Clearly a violation of Jesus commands is when catholics call their 'priests' father. Not to mention, The Bible teaches that only Jesus is our High Priest. We have teachers, but they are equally able to talk to God as we are. Also, we are to confess our sins to God, not a man in a box. Whenever you confess to anyone but Jesus Christ, you are confessing your sins to an anti-christ and denying this scripture;
<< 1 John 2:1 >>
My little children, I'm writing these things to you so that you might not sin. Yet if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father-Jesus, the Messiah, one who is righteous.
An anti-christ is anyone who dissolves the importance or work and person of Christ. When someone sets themselves up as the forgiver of sins, they are making themselves an anti-christ; we must confess to Jesus, and Jesus alone!
Furthermore, catholics praise dead saints like Mary, and make her the 'mother of God', which is a false and pagan title. She is just a human vessel who was used to birth the flesh of Jesus Christ, she was a sinner who needed forgiveness just like any of us. And no, she did not die a virgin, she had a child with Joseph.
Catholics are guilty of minimizing the importance of the completion of Jesus' work on the cross, which is the ONLY thing that saves us, through false doctrines like penance, indulgences, purgatory, and the eucharist (none of which are found in scripture). No amount of religious works, going to church, traditions, festivals, sacriments, or anything else can save you. Only faith in Jesus Christ saves you, and His work on the cross. Unfortunately, catholics forget that his work on the cross was completed as His resurrection, and insist on portraying Jesus still on the cross with the crucifixes with little Jesus' statues pinned to it, celebrating the victory of sin over the sinless Christ, rather than honoring His resurrected reality by having an empty crucifix, which speaks of a resurrected Christ who conquered the grave and sin. Lucifer's happiest memory is Jesus on the cross.
The most abhorent teaching in the catholic church is the eucharist (or transubstantiation), which teaches that the bread and wine taken at the Lord's supper is actually the blood and body of Christ. By believing this, they are denying the once and for all sacrifice of Jesus Christ upon the cross, and re-sacrificing Himself over, and over, as if His once and for all sacrifice was not suffecient. If you ask a catholic what were to happen if you did not partake of this eucharist in the mass, they would say you can not have your sins forgiven. This shows they believe the eucharist is what saves you, but that is a lie. Jesus said we are to eat bread and drink wine to REMEMBER His sacrifice that saved us!
Luke 22.19, Jesus said, This do in remembrance of me.
Jesus said in order to be saved, you must be born again. Catholics have no idea what this means, and usually say they were born again when they had water dropped on their heads as a baby (also a false teaching). In order to be born again, you need to cry out to God that you are a sinner, repent from your sins, and place your faith firmly in Jesus Christ alone for salvation, and receive the Holy Spirit of God, as the book of Acts promises in Acts 2.
I attend a baptist church, where I worship the Lord, but I do not for a moment think my church attendance saves me; I am saved by grace, through faith in Christ, and I go to church to worship the Lord who saved me.

Analysis: "Since I was taught by Pastor Joe Billy Bob that the Catholic Church was evil and satanic, I'll just whip out some scriptures that conveniently support my bias.
The Catholic Church is bigger, richer, and older than mine, so I have to tear it down as much as possible."
"having a golden cup in her hand"
"The chalice occupies the first place among sacred vessels, and by a figure of speech the material cup is often used as if it were synonymous with the Precious Blood itself. "
"The earliest specimen of a chalice of whose original purpose we can feel reasonably confident is the chalice of Chelles, preserved until the French Revolution and believed to have been wrought by, or at least to date from the time of, the famous artificer St. Eligius of Noyon, who died in 659. The material was gold, richly decorated with enamels and precious stones."
"And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour"
"the cardinals wear scarlet and the bishops wear purple"
"The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth"
"The Seven Hills of Rome east of the river Tiber form the geographical heart of Rome, within the walls of the ancient city."
"vatican city is a landlocked sovereign city-state whose territory consists of a walled enclave within the city of Rome."
"I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus"
40 million Christians were killed by the church headquartered in Rome because they wanted to only follow the bible (the bible was also preserved by people not associated with roman catholics (the most complete of all found in a Greek orthodox monastery))
"MOTHER OF HARLOTS"
the church of rome called Mary the mother of the church after they said the assumption is how she went to heaven.
"CATHOLICISM IS 'MOTHER' CHURCH -
ALL OTHERS ARE DEFECTIVE" pope John Paul 2000
"Given the title is mother of harlots, and you claim the Church calls itself "Mother Church," would imply her childern were harlots. That is all protestants are harlots. So I don't think you have put any rational thought into this idea."
the catholic church doesn't have a lot in common with protestant churches. they call themselves the mother of all churches the protestant churches don't, the evangelical churches say that Jesus only knows who belongs to His church.
the church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints doesn't have anything in common with the bible. calling something a church doesn't mean it's Jesus's church. people can follow another Jesus.
Revelation is the most explicit "Come out of her, my people, so that you will not share in her sins". We come out of Babylon, so that we do not sin in the same way as Babylon does. And her sins are piled up to heaven (Rev 18:5).
"Given then you claim the title is incorrect you are saying she is the mother of nothing and thus can't be the mother of harlots"
she's the mother of people who continue to disregard Jesus's teachings and partake in her sins (praying to the dead, worshipping Mary, having mass, transubsitiation wanting communian to literally be Jesus blood and body, letting the pope change any doctrine he wants). people who aren't members of that church have come out of her. you can be a Christian and be non denominational, not all Christians came from the roman catholic church.
This is a good analogy and COULD possibly be true but will have to study some more to be sure. I must admit that I have never seen it put this way but am kind of inclined to agree with you.
Christ Church » Good Friday Readings and Meditations
. In a way, it is our task to hang upon the words of the one who hangs on the Cross for us and for our salvation.
We meet to ponder the deep mystery of human redemption in the passion and death of Christ. For centuries in the West, there has been the tradition of gathering on this day to ponder the mystery of Christ crucified through meditation upon .
And yet there is a challenge. The seven last words of the Crucified are rich and powerful, disturbing and disquieting words that concentrate so much of the Scriptures for us, especially those books which as Christians we call the Old Testament, as well as the whole story of Jesus Christ revealed in the witness of the New Testament. The Seven Last Words belong to the tradition of the Church in her faithful response to the Words of the Crucified as found in all four Gospels but as necessarily seen in relation to the whole of the Scriptures. We cannot ponder the words of the Crucified except in relation to the whole pageant of human redemption revealed in the Scriptures.
