Public Vs Catholic High School? Help?
Dowling vs SC North #119

hello. This year ill be in the 8th grade at a Catholic School. I get straight A's, and I will be put into Algebra 1 in the 8th grade. When i graduate, im having trouble deciding what High School to go to. One is a public, new, started in 2005, is just like 1 minute away from my house. It looks awesome on the outside. Its North Point School for Science, Technology and Industry. The other, is a catholic one. Its like the "big sibling" to the school I go to now because most of the students go thier after they graduate. When I graduate from HS, I want to go to Columbia University, then on to Either Harvard or Yale for Law.
If my grades stay perfect, and I participate in alot of Extra Curriculum Activities, etc, will going to a Public School Affect being accepted at a Top School?? Ehh... idk what to do. Im confused now. Can Someone give me advice and stuff? Thanks.

What school you come from affects college admission only if it's a horrible school and you didn't receive a satisfactory education--which for you doesn't seem like a problem at all!

My advice would be to try the public school, you will meet new people and have new experiences than what you've know in private school (it's more laid-back and more like the real world, private schools tend to be more sheltered and strict.)

You still have a lot of time to worry about college, just focus on getting good grades and taking the best classes you can, but don't forget to also enjoy life!

Good luck!

The Catholic school appears to be typical of many Catholic schools, students of varied abilities and a good solid education. It doesn't appear to have a super rigorous curriculum, from the number of National Merit (based on PSAT scores) recognized seniors. At top prep schools with rigorous curriculum where many students matriculate to the Ivies, you will see 40 - 50% recognized (and about half Finalists), 20%+ at schools a step down academically. The public school looks quite good for a public school, so this is what is probably making your decision more difficult that it would usually be. And being so close, that's very convenient.

Just a guess, but it seems like you'd probably have a better chance at getting into a good college from the Catholic school. It's likely from what I read about the schools that the Catholic school will have better college counseling, and that really helps when you're applying to top colleges. You'll need to have exceptional college grades to get into Harvard or Yale Law School, tougher than getting into the colleges.

Even at the best public schools it's quite a bit more rowdier than private/Catholic schools. That can be a distraction from your studies. Also, as you know, private/Catholic schools will keep on you to do well, it's expected that you will work hard and go to college. With higher expectations, there are better results.

You need to decide which school is the better fit for you. Go to the Open House, etc for the Catholic school, go to events at the public school if there isn't shadowing or open house. Sports, theatre, anything. If your parents are willing to pay tuition, and if the fit is equal, you might consider the Catholic school.

To get into Columbia or other top colleges you need to stand out. Look at my post here to see some kids who were highly considered by the Ivies, each one was accepted by an Ivy. My dh does admissions interviews for local applicants to his Ivy alma mater.

Before you decide you want to go to law school, spend some time in a law office, and be sure you love to write. Being an attorney means writing all day (and night). You have to have a good knowledge of literature and history, so you can write interesting, clear briefs, etc that the court (clerk!) will actually read. It also means working all the time, I mean 12 hour days every day, if you want to be successful, work at biglaw.

Good luck!

The Hawk - Staff Editorial: School#39;s out forever; Philly loses two ...

On Friday, Oct. 9, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced the closing of two Catholic high schools. In June 2010, Cardinal Dougherty High School and Northeast Catholic High School for Boys will close their doors after decades of declining student populations. Local students and their parents are upset, particularly because the same Archdiocese that has decided to close Cardinal Dougherty and Northeast Catholic is also planning to open a new, $65 million state-of-the-art high school in Royersford this fall.

Apparently the value of "men and women with and for others" doesn't hold its own against budget concerns and socioeconomic status.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has defended its decisions against a rising outcry of criticism from local parents who believe that money, rather than Catholic values, lie at the heart of the high schools' closings. In an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer, Bishop Joseph P. McFadden, who oversees Catholic education, said, "Our hope is that Catholic secondary education will be available in every area of the diocese and will be accessible."
