Can I have my 5 month old christening (catholic) at home?
IMG_9317_edited-2

We would like to get my 5 month old christened, I am catholic so would like a catholic christening, I dont currently go to church. Could we have this ceremony at home? How do we go about it? Thanks

Maybe.

All Catholic sacraments are intended to be events where the entire church community comes together to celebrate and worship God.

A private Baptism would not fulfill this goal but your personal circumstances may allow it. Just ask your parish priest.

With love in Christ.

The Old Catholic Church

Many people ask me about the Old Catholic Church and its validity. Here is a brief history and background of the origins of the Old Catholic ...

How can I cheer up an old catholic man?
Votivkirche by night

There's this old man on my meals-on-wheels route, and every time I deliver his meal he has me make his bed, and while I'm doing that he tells me that Baptist theology is "crippled" (I'm a Baptist) and then tries to get me to go catholic.

I don't really mind, I think it's funny. Anyways, he told me that he was feeling a little depressed on friday, and it made me sad.

How can I cheer him up? I have the "Word of Promise" audio Bible, and I was going to burn him a copy of the Book of John or something.

He can't really eat anything, so I can't bake him brownies or anything.

What do I do?

You're a dear and thoughtful young lady. Bless your heart for seeing him as a man in need of kindness, your desire to respect his faith, and your charitable amusement about his "Baptist" comments!

You've received many very good suggestions here. I would just like to underscore one in particular, and that is to find out if Holy Communion is being brought to him as part of the community ministry of the local parish ... and if not, please call the parish office and ask them to contact him. Often that's the only way we're aware that homebound Catholics are in need of this -- when someone who cares about them calls.

I hope you're able to follow up on some of these suggestions. Even just one of them would mean a lot to this man -- and your thoughtfulness even more. God bless you!

19 year old non-practicing catholic wanted to attend synagogue for the first time?
Muckross House, Killarney, Co. Kerry, Ireland.

I am a 19 year old non- practicing catholic. I've always been interested in Judaism and have wanted to experience temple for awhile now. I plan on attending the synagogue a block from my house tomorrow & have no idea what to expect or prepare for. Am I aloud to be there? Ithe only advice I've been given so far was to wear a shawl over my head..... Any help/suggestions?

A lot of this depends on what type of synagogue is a block from your house.

If it is an Orthodox or Chabad Synagogue, then you should plan to attend Sabbath morning services. Where clothing that covers your upper arms and legs at least to your knees. Don't show cleavage. Chabad services usually begin after 9AM. Other Orthodox services likely begin between 8:30 and 9AM and run for about 2 1/2 hours.

If it is a non-Orthodox Synagogue, plan to go to the Friday night services.

In either case, don't even think of wearing a shawl over your head. Check when the service you're planning to attend begins.

Good luck.

What are Old Catholics and how are they different from the Catholic Church?
BRA-Mariana-0903-43-v1

The group known as "Old Catholics" are a break away church from the "first Vatican council" who didn't agree with the dogma of "Papal Infallibility"; specifically, they believed that infallibility on matters of faith only applied when voted by a select group of bishops & not by the Pope alone. These "dissident" bishops met to unite in Utrecht Germany so the "Old Catholic church" is also known as the "Union of Utrecht Catholic Church". This church is not to be confused with the "Latin Trendentine Church" which broke away from the Pope after the "second Vatican council" of 1962.

Old Catholics reject the Infallibility of the Pope. Since Vatican I they have maintained the traditional Catholic teachings

Church and Vatican documents showed that in the mid-90s, two Wisconsin bishops urged the Vatican office led by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger — now the XVI pope — to let them hold a church trial against the Rev. Lawrence Murphy. The bishops admitted the trial was coming years after the alleged abuse, but argued that the deaf community in Milwaukee was demanding justice from the church, but this evil looking Pope said , No! Catholic League President Insists Scandal Involves Homosexuals Not ...

Bill Donohue, the controversial head of the Catholic League, was recently denounced for appearing to suggest that the parents were at fault in some way in cases of child abuse against the church. Now, he has argued that coverage of claims in Wisonsin referring to “child abuse” are wrong since “the vast majority of the victims [were] post-pubescent.”

This tool claims to have the ‘facts’ like he knows what facts are considering that he believes some guy just magically rose from the dead and currently hangs out in the clouds.

It’s people like Donohue that ought to be smacked – repeatedly – upside his empty melon. And, it is abundantly obvious the Church doesn’t subscribe to the saying, “the buck stops here.” Gee, what would Jesus do?
