What is the saying that is in top of the roman catholic cross?

Many crosses and all crucifixes have either the abbreviation "INRI" or the Latin phrase IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDAEORVM, which translates to English as: "Jesus the Nazarene, the King of the Jews".

This phrase appears in the New Testament in the Gospels of Matthew (27:37), Mark (15:26); Luke (23:38), and John (19:19).

The Copts also cros left to right the reason that my Coptic friend gave was it symbolosed changing from a goat on the left marching off into hell had to the she sheep at Christ's right marching off to salvation as the Roman Catholics made the left to right cross standared some time in the high midle ages. 11-13th centuries. The Patriarche of Rome was the only Patriarch in the western Roman empire and it's jurisditction included not only western Europe and borded the Patriarch of Constaniople on the Agian aroung the western Blakans and Eastern Italy but it also included parts of North Africa and borded the Coptic Patriarchate near what is present day Lybia it would not be un thinkable that both the left to right and right to left. As Norht Africa had long sicne fallen to the Muslims by the time the rulling was made it would be logical to conclude that right to left was clearly viewed as the Greek way and the Pope switched left to right to spot his own flock.

Trying to find out what the," IHS," on a Roman Catholic Cross stands for.I have been told many different thing
2011Portugal_1393

I saw this cross on a church in Manhatten and it had the letters " IHS," across the center of it. Can anyone tell me what this means. I have been told several different translations, but want to know if any one answer is correct. I have been told they are the leteers of Jesus in Greek. I have also been told it means, In his service and several other forms of Jesus name. Thanks for any help you can give me.

IHS are the first 3 letters of the Greek name of Jesus.

Jesus Christ in Greek is ΙΗΣΟΥΣ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ and written in the English alphabet is "IHCOYC XPICTOC" or "IHSOYS XPISTOS"

Starting in the third century the nomina sacra, or names of Jesus, were sometimes shortened by contraction in Christian inscriptions, resulting in sequences of Greek letters such as:

+ Jesus +
IH (iota eta)
IC (iota sigma) (first and last letter)
IHC (iota eta sigma)
IHS (iota eta sigma)
JH (iota eta)
JC (iota sigma)
JHC (iota eta sigma)
JHS (iota eta sigma)

+ Christ +
X (chi) as in Xmas
XP (chi rho)
XC (chi sigma) (first and last letter)
XPC (chi rho sigma)
XPS (chi rho sigma)

+ Jesus Christ +
IX
IC XC
IHS XPS
JX
JC XC
JHS XPS

The Greek letter sigma has been translated as both "C" and "S"
The Greek letter iota has been translated as both "I" and "J"

+ INRI +

Many crosses and all crucifixes have either the abbreviation "INRI" or the Latin phrase IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDAEORVM, which translates to English as: "Jesus the Nazarene, the King of the Jews".

This phrase appears in the New Testament in the Gospels of Matthew (27:37), Mark (15:26); Luke (23:38), and John (19:19).

Why do Catholics claim that the physical movements of making the cross is Roman Catholic orginated?
Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria (Carcar City, Cebu)

The Trinitarian Order which is the GOD-HEAD and begin with Christ Immanuel birth. He established the Holy Trinity. Our Lord's Order of restoration would signify the joyful mystery of this. So when using the physical movements, Christian, Lutherans and Catholics would acknowledge His Order.
Therefore Trinitarian Unknownly!! What ya think?
(Ora le..bet I do penance for ask'n this one)
Blessings to all!!

I have no idea why. But I do know the cross itself was a symbol to the ancient chaldeans thousands of years before Jesus came round calling on us. It was the symbol of life used by some of the higher priests .. later the egyptians took it and used it for awhile .. and so on.

    Anecdotal Evidence: `The Cross Staggered Him#39;

Our neighborhood was almost exclusively Roman Catholic, mostly Poles, Czechs, Slovaks and Italians. We were among the non-churchgoers and our holidays were thoroughly secularized. My mother muddled the messages – the right sort of religion kept at the right distance was good but not for us. Good Friday was notable: Between noon and 3 p.m. we were not to play army or make any disturbance that might offend the Mass-goers around us. I’m still not a churchgoer but my mother’s prohibition of raucous fun while neighbors remembered Christ’s suffering – and perhaps her sentimentality – remains fast among my instincts.
