I know where I live eagles are a very popular mascot for Catholic schools.
Where do you live that has state-funded, public Roman Catholic education (or other religious education)? It exists in Ontario, Canada, under the "Separate School Board" which I think is a great thing. All other religions are grouped under the "Public" school board, and are publically funded as well. There are two school boards in Ontario, therefore.
Where else? Curious, thanks!
Practically every Catholic school in Canada is funded by the state. Unfortunately, this puts requirements on what they teach (health class, etc...)
In the US, Catholic schools are generally privately funded, which means they tend to be more faithful. Catholic schools vary as far as how "Catholic" they are. It depends mostly on what the board decides.
I attend a very hard roman catholic high school (which has a very high academic reputation). I have a 2.9 gpa and live in wisconsin. Many of my friends, who attend public schools, have much higher gpa's. When I entered this school as a freshmen I had a very high gpa and could've gone to a public school and gotten a higher gpa. Would a school like madison factor in the academic reputation of my school vs. others. And if not, tell me other things that are important for getting into madison. please and thank u
ps. I will be a junior and I have had a substantial increase in gpa every semester
Pinky,
This is the thing. Any college you apply to, they will look at what high school you went to. If your particular high school is famous for it's high academic reputation then I guess the colleges in WI are also aware of your school's reputation, and in that case your gpa should not be the ultimate deciding factor.

Are these characteristics of a good Catholic high school? Or a bad Catholic high school? Right now I consider myself a Deist and I am not a Roman Catholic anymore. Anyway, here are some characteristics of my old high school:
According to a survey done by the school newspaper during my sophomore year, 89% of the faculty and staff supported the separation of church and state, 7% chose to not give an opinion and only 2% disapproved of the separation of church and state.
There was an opening prayer every morning and in the beginning of most classes.
In my 4 years of high school, I have never heard the word “God” or “theistic evolution” in a science classroom (save for the times we say an opening prayer). Darwin was greatly admired by my AP Biology teacher. The same teacher also told me she was a subscriber to Thunderf00t’s videos on YouTube. She disliked creationists as much as Thunderf00t did but she still didn’t approve of how he encouraged people to laugh at creationists.
As far as I knew, there were no Fundamentalist Christians in the staff. However I knew at least 15 people in the student body that were Young Earth or Progressive Creationists. There was only one guy that was an Intelligent Design supporter.
The theology/religion teachers rarely preached.
The school was very liberal when I was there (which isn’t a problem) and it seems to still be in the same condition. When I asked my little brother how the mock presidential election at the school turned out, 79% voted for Obama, 18% voted for McCain, and 3% voted for a third party candidate. 92% of the school said that they would vote “No” on Proposition 8 while 8% said they would vote “yes”.
Just for fun, the student life team also put up a poll on abortion. 3% of those who voted said that abortion was wrong in any given situation. 74% said that abortion is only right when the woman was raped, in cases of incest, and if an abortion would save the life of the woman. And 23% said they were pro-choice.
I knew of much more Agnostics/Atheists than Fundamentalist Christians.
I did not see any pregnant girls when I was there. Since there were only about 700 students in the whole school I think I would have noticed if someone was pregnant.
Well when I say that the religion/theology teachers rarely preached, it means they lectured/educated rather than indoctrinated.
sounds exactly like my old catholic high school was like. Everyone was very accepting and understanding. We had muslims, christians, jews, every faith you can imagine there. Creation was never mentioned, in fact in our religion class we were taught that the creation story in Genesis is a myth.
Honestly, catholics tend to be a lot more liberal-progressive than other christians. The only thing I wonder is, were those polls you mentioned polls of the teachers opinions, or was it the student body? because I know that at my high school we were ALWAYS taught pro life. I know that most of the students were pro choice, but the teachers had to teach pro life.
do you believe that they teach us to believe the Bible literally, and that Jesus was God?
would your opinion change if i said that i go to a roman catholic, diocesan high school, and i believe Jesus was just like us. In my theology(religion) class they taught us the contrary of what you are probably thinking. They taught of the holy trinity. Jesus was God in the flesh, God made himself flesh for these main reasons,
1. to save us by reconciling us with God
(restoring our love and friendship with God)
2. so that we may know God's love
(he shows us through his life that God loves us and is always ready to forgive us when we sin)
3. to be our model of holiness
(by his life he showed us how a christian should live)
4. to make us partakers of our the divine nature
(Jesus enables us to becaome sharers of his divinity)
that all came straight from my religion textbook, that i had homewokr in.
We do not pray to Jesus because he told us to, or because he IS God, but becuase of our deep appreciation and love for him. Why do we pray to saints? Because we have gratitude, appreciation, and love forthem, Its kind of the same thing for Jesus christ.
?
I believe in God and Jesus, I know too much about them to doubt them. My life has been a hoot, so I don't need a religion class to tell me what is real, I have a lesson learned file for that. I also believe what Joyce Meyer says......."Going to church and sitting in a pew doesn't make you a Christian, I could sit in my garage all day and it won't make me a car." I think you are a wonderful Christian, peace be with you.

PBS is running an intriguing documentary tonight on a legendary inner city basketball coach.
“The Street Stops Here,” which airs tonight at 10 if you get Arizona’s PBS, profiles Bob Hurley, basketball coach at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, N.J. He’s led the team to 23 state championships and three national championships since 1972, all while working a full-time job as a parole officer.
Here’s a preview:
If you catch the full feature (or order your own copy ), you can relive the team’s 2007-08 season. It’s the year that the team pursues its 23rd state championship and that the inner-city school, which subsists on donations, tries to raise enough funds to stay open for another year.

In a unbelievable twist of events Guyer will not be making the jump from Class 4A to Class 5A next season, multiple UIL officials have confirmed to me.
Loof Lirpa, chief of the UIL's 2010-2011 reclassification team, said the snapshot numbers Guyer turned in was tampered with by a rival school's administrator who has not been identified but put under investigation and on leave with pay.
Lirpa said the administrator in question found a way to hack into the school system and raise the number to more than 2,065, the cutoff number between Class 5A and Class 4A.
Lirpa said Guyer's actually number is 2,060 which makes it the largest Class 4A school in the state.
"This has happened before," Lirpa said. "It happens in El Paso all the time."
I have yet to get a hold of Guyer coach John Walsh but I am sure he and baseball coach Johnny Kinzy are square dancing together happy as can be.
