Can A Married Man become A Roman Catholic Priest?
Father Francis Chinh Nguyen

Can one change his faith, become a Roman Catholic, and go on to become a priest while still married?

There are a few cases where married ministers were allowed to become Catholic priests, but they are quite rare.

If a married man converts to Catholicism and he is not already a priest, then no, he cannot become a priest while married. He can though become a deacon (that's the closest a married man to get to becoming a priest), but you do take a vow that if your wife dies, you will not remarry. You can then continue your journey towards becoming a priest.

In the cases where a person is a minister and converts to Catholicism and wishes to become a Catholic priest, everything is taken into account. The family must be in agreement with their decision and the priests who interview the minister pray and discern if he is truly called to the priesthood or not.

We believe in the lay person priesthood that the congregation shares, but we also believe that there are men who are called to the priesthood of Mekilzedeck (sp?) who serve as our shepards under the authority of Jesus.

How can a 60-year old American man become a Roman Catholic priest, brother or monk?
Kneeling

I'm divorced; my children are all grown up and financially independent; I've had 16 years of Roman Catholic Education. I originally came to Thailand as a Jesuit Lay Volunteer Missionary and live in Thailand now. Now that I'm free from parental responsibilities etc., I believe God is calling me to some form of the Roman Catholic Clergy vocation. My Bachelor's degree is from Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass 1968; my Master is in Education from USC, L.A. Cal 1974. I've been running my own tutorial service in Bangkok since 1986.
I'm in excellent health.

Why not become a Deacon of your parish? Deacons can be married with children.

Does anyone know of a Roman Catholic Priest in Portland OR that will marry in a non Catholic chapel?
Vestment from Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo_MG_4487

My fiance and I found a beautiful chapel to get married in. It was once a Catholic chapel, but isn't any longer. The lady who rented the chapel said they have had a couple Jesuit priests marry people there in the past. Does anyone know of any Jesuits that will do this in the Portland OR area?

Although the usual practice is for a Catholic marriage to be celebrated is in a parish church, the bishop can give permission for the marriage to be celebrated in another suitable place.

Your chapel may be considered a suitable place. Ask your parish priest first.

For more information, see the Code of Canon Law, Canon 1118: http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG1104/__ P40.HTM

Can a Roman Catholic priest absolve a woman who confesses she has had a termination of pregnancy?

This is a general enquiry, therefore please don't assume it's personal.

Some pregnancies terminate involuntarily, but I assume you mean a woman who voluntarily aborted a pregnancy.

God's mercy is unlimited, with sincere contrition your sin will be forgiven and you will receive absolution from your sin. If you are a Catholic the Sacrament of Reconciliation is for you.

The words the priest prays over you are these:

God, the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of His Son
has reconciled the world to Himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us
for the forgiveness of sins;
Through the ministry of the Church may God give you pardon and peace,
and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

If you are not a Christian, your sin will be absolved with a Christian Baptism.

Should you be in-between, a Baptized Christian and a non-Catholic. A priest would be happy to guide into making a "perfect-contrition" with which God will absolve you of your sins.

  • First known black Roman Catholic priest in U.S. on his way to ...

    T he Rev. Augustus Tolton, the nation&rsquo;s first known black Roman Catholic priest, could become St. Augustus.</p><p>Cardinal Francis George of Chicago announced this week that he will appoint a commission to assemble facts about Tolton&rsquo;s &ldquo;heroic virtues&rdquo; and introduce his cause for sainthood to Rome.</p><p>He also invited anyone who can report spiritual or physical favors granted through prayer in Tolton&rsquo;s name to submit their testimony to the archdiocese.</p><p>&ldquo;We need his prayers and his help, especially to become a more united church,&rdquo; George told the Catholic New World, the Chicago archdiocese&rsquo;s newspaper.</p><p>Tolton&rsquo;s rise to prominence began with his family&rsquo;s escape from slavery in the Hannibal, Mo., area as the Civil War began. Baptized before crossing the Mississippi River to Quincy, Ill., Tolton and his siblings became members of the Catholic Church. Later, a parish priest there encouraged him to join the priesthood.</p><p>Because no American seminary would admit a black man, Tolton traveled to Rome to be ordained, and the Vatican sent him back to Quincy. There, he oversaw an integrated congregation, despite opposition from the town&rsquo;s white priests.</p><p>The archbishop assigned Tolton to Chicago to start the city&rsquo;s first mission for African-Americans. Tolton raised money for the parish building and oversaw its design before dying of a heat stroke in 1897 at age 43.</p><p>Vanessa White, director of the Tolton Center for African-American Catholics at Catholic Theological Union, said Tolton&rsquo;s story resembles the lives of many saints in the Catholic Church.</p><p>&ldquo;Many of them did not have an easy road, and neither did he,&rdquo; White said.</p><p>&ldquo;To think that every seminary in the U.S. was closed to him &hellip; but that did not stand in the way of him being able to fulfill his call.&rdquo;</p><p>Tolton&rsquo;s grand-niece Sabrina Penn, author of &ldquo;A Place for My Children&rdquo; and biographies about Tolton, said she was thrilled.</p><p>&ldquo;Hallelujah,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;To be born into slavery and become a priest and have the honor to be called a saint is just awesome.&rdquo;

    Catholics Mark Good Friday Under Cloud of Pedophile Priest Scandal ...

    Around the world today, Catholics are re-enacting their savior's last steps toward crucifixion in somber and sometimes literally painful ceremonies. In Jerusalem, Rome and Mumbai, believers are shouldering heavy wooden crosses in miles-long parades. The Vatican asks its followers to try to feel the suffering of Jesus, his mother and his followers because of what they believe happened on this day 1,977 years ago. Christians around the world mark the Holy Week of Easter amid reports of alleged sex abuse by Roman Catholic priests in Ireland, Germany and Italy. Here, believers carry wooden crosses Friday along Jerusalem's Via Dolorosa, the route where tradition says Jesus carried the cross on which he was to be crucified. Click through for more Holy Week photos. Here in Portugal, little...
