what to do regarding college?
Holy Ghost

My two schools of choice regarding going to college is mass. college of pharmacy and health sciences and sacred heart university. Now these are two completely different styles of school. My dad is hell bent on me going to sacred heart because of the discipline of catholic school and the environment it is in....and frequently points THAT out. MCPHS however is in Boston and has a different style of living....KEEP IN MIND MY DAD IS NOT THE TYPE OF PERSON YOU FIND COMFORT DISAGREEING WITH...I still have to wait and see how much i got from FAFSA

I'm sure you probably realize this and your dad will never believe it but students at Sacred Heart party just as hard as students from any other school so there really isn't much "catholic discipline" going on.

Sacred Heart College School HAKA 08

I need some tough criticism. Will you tell me if this is a good story/idea for a novel?
Clouds from my office window

Hey, I really want to know if I have what it takes to be a writer. This is what i want to do with my life. Be completely honest. it will not hurt my feelings at all. I can handle the truth.

How we operate

The last year of high school is a tough transition in your life. You are thinking where am I going in life? What college am I going to go to? Am I going to stay friends with the people I know the most? It’s difficult being a senior in high school. Not know how your life is going to turn out is pretty scary, but falling in love with your best friend and trying to tell them when you are about to leave to pursue your dreams is not the easiest part of being a senior.
Some people have it pretty easy finding the right person they want to be with, others not so much. Pleasant Creek Missouri, home of the gremlins. It’s tough being an average girl at Sacred Heart catholic high school, with pale skin black hi-tops skinny jeans and a hoodie with your dark brown hair pulled up every day. You look over at the girl who’s got your man you want to be with for the rest of your life. Over there, with her clique, gossiping about sex, hook-ups and if she has anything in her teeth, that would be the girl I envy, Sarah Jean. Yeah she’s got the look, perfect teeth, perfect red, her curves are perfect, the clothes that she wears are mostly designer, not to mention perfect boyfriend. Nyland Davenport, captain of the soccer team, and my best friend. You are probably thinking, how he can be my friend. I’ve been friends with Nyland all my life, we basically grew up together. His mom and my dad were high school sweethearts, and eventually grew apart, his mom moved to North Carolina to become a doctor, and fell in love with his dad. Right when they had Nyland they moved back to Missouri to raise him here, and that’s when I come into the picture, Caitlin Sanford. Nyland and I were inseparable, until when he was 10 he mom died in a car accident. It was tough on him, but we were stronger than ever. Well when you hit your double-digit age, you can’t exactly be friends with a boy, so I met my other best friend Samantha Jane Page. She is one of a kind, she is basically the other me, except ten times funnier than and not as uptight as I am, and she’s tall for a normal girl. Sammy is skinny and has long blonde hair that flows perfectly around her face, even though she does nothing to it but shampoo, condition, and blow dries it. She has Sparkling blue eyes, with a button nose. Her pearly whites light up the room every time she smiles. She could actually be a model if she would actually try to look cute. It just seems like yesterday we were in junior high.
I never really thought that my senior year of high school, my parents would leave me but they did, they are really involved with their work, and moved to Italy to work on this big top secret project. So they let my brother, Nick, who basically is a lazy bum watch me for 9 months. It always surprises me how close we are, he always gives me great advice, and I hang out with him every time I’m not with Sammy or Nyland.
If you think my life is awesome, it’s not, I always end up screwing up something, come to find out I screw up a lot of stuff. But in the end, I always find the right path to success.
The bell rings, and Mrs. Walker lets us out early since we are seniors and all. Sammy and I run downstairs to the lunch line. “I hope its Sloppy Joes.” Sammy says with a gust of wind right after. We get to the line, and we get our food, and sit at our table, just us two, no one else. “Ugh, this is such a gross lunch.” I said. “I am so taking your sloppy Joseph then.” Sammy said. “Fine with me,” I replied. Sammy is chowing down on her sloppy joe. I look around to find my other best friend but he is nowhere in sight. Finally I turn back around in my seat. “You know he is probably getting his lunch.” Sammy said. “He always gets his lunch before me.” I exclaimed. “You know, you sound like a stalker.” Sammy said while eating with her mouth full. She was right, I observed him too much, but what if it’s not enough. Sometimes I just wish he would notice how much I care about him. I look around again, and there he is with his shaggy light brown hair, his dark brown eyes, his complexion almost too perfect for a teenager face, his letter jacket fitting his tight body, his jeans that he sags just a little below his waist, and his Nike size 12 shocks. Watching Nyland walking toward me was like seeing a Greek God. I sometimes thought that he had a certain glow around him, and everyone seemed to watch him as he went by.
“Hey you,” He said as he nudges me with his arm, his muscular arm, I got chills when he touched me. “Hey what’s up?” I said with my voice a little shaky. I could tell when I was too much when Sammy would kick me under the table. “I’m just about to go to snack bar” Nyland replied. “Why do you go to snack bar? It's lame.” I was right snack bar is lame. All people do is shoot aro

Nope, you don't have what it takes--yet. Writing is a skill which requires practice and qualified critique and/or classroom work for the typical writer to achieve potential.

As of this moment, your writing is terribly wordy and unfocused. You can work to change that, of course.

I'll critique just a bit to show you what I mean.

The last year of high school is a tough transition in your life. [My life? Why are you bringing me into your story? It's better to lose 'you' and find another indefinite pronoun--if you need one at all. IMO, it would be better without any: The last year of high school is a trough transition in life.] You [Me? Leave me out of it!] are thinking[, W] where am I going [in life--delete--it's understood]? What college am I going to go to? Am I going to stay friends with the people I know [the most--delete--it adds nothing.]? [Good place for a new paragraph.] It’s difficult being a senior in high school. Not know [<--Agents and editors often reject on finding two mistakes. Here's your first.] how your life is going to turn out is pretty scary, but falling in love with your best friend and trying to tell them <--and two. Where's my 'REJECT' stamp?] when you are about to leave to pursue your dreams is not the easiest part of being a senior. [Wordy sentence.]
Some people have it pretty easy finding the right person [they want to be with, others not so much--the bracketed part could be deleted]. Pleasant Creek Missouri, home of the [G]gremlins. [<--What does this have to do with anything, since the school is not the public high school. and I doubt there are real gremlins in town.] It’s tough being an average girl at Sacred Heart [C]--and three, in case the agent is soft-hearted.] catholic high school, with pale skin[,] black hi-tops[,] skinny jeans[,] and a hoodie with your dark brown hair pulled up every day. [I'm sorry, but you did say you could take criticism. Not only does this sentence feature a high school with pale skin and very specific clothing, but it's got a hoodie with its own hair! Be mindful that descriptions of clothing are almost never necessary and rarely add a thing--but they date your work very quickly, as fashion changes.] You look over at the girl who’s got your man you want to be with for the rest of your life. Over there, with her clique, gossiping about sex, hook-ups and if she has anything in her teeth [huh?], that would be the girl I envy, Sarah Jean. Yeah[,] she’s got the look, perfect teeth, perfect red, her curves are perfect, the clothes that she wears are mostly designer, not to mention perfect boyfriend. Nyland Davenport, captain of the soccer team, and my best friend. You [Not me!] are probably thinking, how he can be my friend.[?]

It's hard to show the needless wordiness in the confines of YA. Let me take a one-pass rewrite of the part I copied. I'll come back and edit.

Edit: your wrote

Fast rewrite:
The last year of high school is a trough transition. Where is my life going? Where will I go to college? Will I lose my old friends? Falling in love with your best friend right when you’re leaving to chase your dreams doesn’t make it any easier.

It’s easy for some people to find their special someone. In Pleasant Creek, Missouri, home of the Gremlins, it’s even tougher for an average girl at Sacred Heart Catholic. I hide in my hoodie and hope my clothes fit in, but Sarah Jean, the most perfectly formed, perfectly dressed, perfectly perfect of all the perfect girls in her clique, has the guy I want to spend my life with. Nyland Davenport, captain of the soccer team, and my best friend. [127 words]

I managed to cut the word count by almost half. What's missing that needs to be there? Nothing, really, except a tendency to repeat, to state what the reader understands, to use more words than you need to to make a statement.

It's a learned skill. You improve with practice. Take any page of something you wrote, count its words, and see if you can reduce the count by at least a third, better a half, without dropping content. It's slow going, but it forces you to write lean, the way agents and editors demand.

You work at it, and I guarantee you'll get better.

Which colleges (3) are best for pre med of the following:?
Sacred Heart

Siena College(NY), Fordham University (NY), Quinnipiac University(CT), Fairfield University (CT), Sacred Heart University(CT), Marist College(NY), Binghamton University(SUNY), Massachusetts college of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MA), Philadelphia University(PA), Loyola College(MD), Catholic University of America(DC), St Johns University(NY), and James Madison University (VA).

I don't know much about those schools. I would personally shoot for a large state school.

The biggest things to get into medical school, aside from GPA and MCAT scores, are that you have had interesting and meaningful experiences in:
1) Community Service
2) Medically related volunteering/work
3) Research (most important for those wanting to go to a research heavy school)

Everything else that you do outside of these three areas is what makes you unique, interesting, and can only improve your chances. I personally feel that one of my strongest features when applying was my dancing experiences. These three things, especially 1 and 2, are critical to many schools, because it shows both a tendency towards compassion and charity, as well as provides you with a basis to prove why you want to go to medical school. Because of this, here are my personal recommendations on selecting a school.

1) Has a research program that is large enough to sustain undergraduate participation.
Look for schools that have undergraduate thesis projects, undergraduate fellowship positions, etc. A school with Research 1 designation is great, because that means there are tons of research projects going on. If you never publish or present a paper, that's fine. However, doing so can be a major boost, especially if you are author or co-author, or even 29th author of a paper that makes it into a major journal like Nature. It does not necessarily have to be medically related research, but I would recommend it if you are contemplating MD/PhD.

2) A moderately well known school.
I personally would recommend limiting your choices to one of the top 200 or so schools. You want a school that has had a decent number of pre-meds, because this increases the chances of an admissions committee knowing something about the opportunities available at your school. It also increases your chances of getting good advising from a pre-med office. I am a member of the faction that believes that prestige is not a significant factor in the admissions process. Having gone to a public school that isn't even ranked in the Top 100, I have interviewed at a number of the Top 20, 10, and 5 schools. I personally believe that your own merits outweigh the name of your school significantly. This is not to say that I believe a 3.5 is the same as one school than another. Admissions committees often have "experts" on a given school, or look at statistics like the average GPA and MCAT score of pre-meds in past years. Thus, a 3.5 at Princeton might be more impressive than a 3.5 at John Doe public school, simply because the average GPA and MCAT score at Princeton is a 3.5/33, and a 3.5/28 at John Doe. Clearly, it was harder to earn a 3.5 and 33 at Princeton than a 3.5 and 33 at John Doe (though, the equal MCAT scores would somewhat minimize this). Suffice it to say that a 3.5 and 28 at Harvard isn't going to beat out a 3.8 and 31 at John Doe, all other things being equal. This being said, I feel that opportunities at the more prestigious undergrad schools outside of academics are excellent. However, I feel that any big public school like OSU, ASU, etc will have similar opportunities by virtue of their sheer size. Any school that made it in the top 200 should have enough of everything for you to succeed if you are good enough. If you are good enough at one place, you are good enough anywhere, so long as you aren't handicapped.

3) A School with a medical school or that is near one.
The inside man always has an advantage. If you went to Harvard College, you will have a stronger shot at Harvard Med. This is because you have three years to build relationships with the medical school, do research under doctors affiliated (and thus get letters) with the school, and become an expert on that school. The opportunity to work with doctors at any medical school probably increases your chances everywhere. There is always the chance that they will be recognized, and its a great way to get insight in academic medicine.

4) Go to a school near a reasonably sized city.
Cities have a lot going for them by virtue of their huge populations. There are all sorts of activities available in research, community service, and just fun things that will make you a more well rounded and interesting person. Being near a city means you will also be near at least a few good hospitals or clinics. This saves you on travel time and ease of access, as it is likely students from your school have already built connections with nearby schools.

What path do you guys think I should take?
Sacred Heart

Well I was accepted to St. John's University in New York (a city that I would absolutely LOVE to live in) and Sacred Heart University in small city Fairfield in Connecticut (where i currently live). Both are private Catholic universities and pretty expensive. With financial aid and stuff I'll still have to come up with about $7000 out of my pocket and a good $6000 from my FinAid pack is in loans. I don't want to be $40000 in debt when i graduate. I can't even decide which school to go to now finances is making it harder. Another thing I can do is take a year off and start my acting career. Or i can go to a community college for 2 years (the last thing i want to do, btu its cheaper). What should I do? I want to go to college, but acting is my passion. I was planning on juggling my acting career and college, but i don't think i can do that and college seems too expensive. but i DO need something to falll back on. OMG i don't know what to do! HELP!

You are smart to think about this now. Go back to St. John's financial aid office and see if you can get a student job either with the school or in the city while you attend. There are a lot of jobs in NYC so you should be able to get one or two and work partime during the school year and full time in the summer. Also check into VISTA or the National Guard. These programs will help you through school. Good luck.

Catholic Church in Central PA (Pennsylvania)?
Sacred Heart

I live in Lewistown, PA. There is Sacred Heart (mine), St. Jude's and not much else. I know about Our Lady of Victory, over in State College, but other than that, are there any Catholic Churches in the Central Pennsylvania area? Thanks, and peace be with you.

    Andalusia

On Saturday, the Traveling Literati along with our friends Michele and Stephen took a trip down to Milledgeville, GA, to visit Andalusia , the farm where Flannery O’Connor lived as an adult. All of her works were published while she lived on this farm with her mother Regina.

It’s about a three and a half hour journey to Milledgeville from Greer, so we were on the road by 7:30. We arrived at the farm a little before 11. What a beautiful place it is! The house is a two-story, white house with a red roof and a huge screened-in porch with rocking chairs, Southern and inviting (of course!).

Because Flannery had lupus and was unable to navigate stairs well, the front parlor was made into her bedroom. Inside, you can see the bed where she slept and some other original furnishings. There’s a desk and typewriter placed where they would have been when she lived there; however, because those original pieces were donated to the college in Milledgeville in the 80s, the desk and typewriter at Andalusia are period pieces and not Flannery’s.
