How Catholic is St Joseph's University in Philadelphia?

I really want to go to a Catholic school that values its Catholic faith and tradition, and is not just Catholic in name. I know that many of the Jesuit schools nowadays have lost most or part of their Catholic identity, but I'm holding out hope that St. Joe's is an exception to this trend. I have checked out the Newman Guide for Catholic Colleges, and St. Joe's wasn't listed.

In addition, I think it would be best for a student, former student, parent of student, or faculty member of St. Joseph's to answer this question. If you do not fit this criteria, please let me know what makes you qualified to answer this question. Thanks.


It is a HUGE party school. A few years ago it was ranked by Maxim magazine as having the 7th (or so) hottest girls in the nation.

It's a "Catholic" school but it's not religious by almost any stretch of the imagination. I have personally witnessed people smoking pot directly outside the church.

I grew up in the area and I know the school pretty well. I know some people who are currently attending or have graduated from SJU. Interestingly, they are all Jewish.

If you want a Catholic university, this is NOT the place for you.

How can I find out the cost of catholic schools in my area. I live in Thibodaux, LA.?

    St. Joseph School in Mantua will close at the end of the current school year.

    The decision will leave Portage County with only two remaining Catholic elementary schools.  

    Declining enrollment was a major factor in the decision, according to the Diocese of Youngstown. In mid-March, only 59 students in kindergarten through eighth grade registered for the 2010-2011 school year.  

    The Rev. Michael Garvey, pastor of St. Joseph Parish, informed parents of the decision by letter on Friday and during weekend Masses this past weekend.

    St. Joseph Parish was founded in 1864 and the school opened in 1962. The staff includes Principal Beth Frank, seven teachers and several part-time aides.  

    In announcing the closing of the school, Garvey acknowledged that “St. Joseph School has been an important part of the Catholic communities of northern Portage County for almost 50 years.  It has remained an outstanding school to this day.”
