I don't agree with how it was handled (I am not catholic anyway), but I understand the era and the times when this happened.

I also understand the news was brought forth rather late in the person's life who was accused.

The person is dead and has been for a long time. I think if you really examine the FACTS you would see that one of the people claiming to be abused did bring their information to the local authorities who did NOTHING.

Why blame the church when even the local secular government did nothing? Want to fish for a blame game I guess.

The real issue is why people did not press on the issue at the time and let it go. Very disappointing.

What is the jehovahs family worship nite all about?
st.lawrencescreened

I have been raised as a Roman Catholic and I am very active in my church (St. Lawrence) so I understand what worship is from that point of view. I have many jehovah family members and they do not think their worship is like mine. They have a new family worship nite and so I am curious what the jehovahs on here will tell me about it. I will reserve what my cousin told me and wait patiently for the answers to flow here.

Thanx.

As you have asked this politely, please take this correction I politely make. Jehovah is God's name. Our name is Jehovah's Witnesses, as we all bear witness to our Almighty Creator and his Son, Christ Jesus.

We no longer have two evening meetings at the Kingdom Hall (not counting the Sunday Bible talk and study of the Watchtower) but one, combining the Theocratic Ministry School, Service Meeting and study of the book "Keep Yourselves in God's Love".

Families are encouraged to study the Bible together one evening (or whatever time is convenient) each week. This not only draws the family closer together as a unit, but helps each member grow in spiritual, scriptural knowledge. They also develop a stronger basis on which to defend and teach the truths of the Bible.

Thank you for your question and don't hesitate to ask your family members who are Jehovah's Witnesses any question you have about us and how we worship our Creator, Jehovah.

How many here know the Story of ST.Laurentius?

I copied this from a astronomy letter i recieve so for the anti Catholics to know this came not from a Catholic site...........

258 A.D., to distract the masses from constant war under his reign, the Roman emperor Valerian ordered the merciless execution of dozens of leaders of the Catholic church. Among those martyred was one of the seven deacons of Rome, Laurentius, just 33 years old. The Roman authorities, rarely subtle, tortured Laurentius by roasting him alive on an iron stove. Though doomed, Laurentius taunted his captors and cried out, ""I am already roasted on one side and, if thou wouldst have me well cooked, it is time to turn me on the other.'

With that brave comment, Laurentius, now called St. Lawrence, became the patron saint of comedians. But the date he died, August 10, was also known throughout the world for an annual display of meteors or "shooting stars". In medieval Europe, this meteor display became known as the fiery "Tears of St. Lawrence". We now call them the Perseids, the finest meteor shower of the year, visible from late July through mid-August.

LH, I didn't know this.
Those Roman's were barbaric.
Thanks and God Bless.

Why was St. Lawrence one of the most honored martyrs of the Catholic Church

Little is known in detail about Lawrence, but the legend of his last days seems to be plausible.

It tells us, in the first place, that when the pope was seized, Lawrence accompanied him and asked, with tears in his eyes, “Father, where are you going without your deacon?” The pope answered, “You shall follow me in three days.”

Inspired by this prophecy, the deacon prepared for death by distributing among the poor all the church funds he had on hand, even adding to that welfare fund by selling some of the sacred vessels.

When the prefect of Rome learned of this distribution, he concluded that the Christians were very wealthy. So he summoned Lawrence and ordered him to turn over the church's treasures, to be added to the fund supporting the Roman army.

Lawrence asked only for a few days to make an “inventory” of church possessions before he presented them.

When three days were up, the deacon returned to the prefect accompanied by a large crowd of his poor: the blind, the orphaned, the aged, the lepers, the crippled, the widows and the maidens. “These,” he said to the prefect “are the treasures of the church.” (If our winning heaven depends on our care for our neighbor, then the poor are certainly our ransom!)

The prefect was furious with Lawrence's answer. At once he arrested him and condemned him to the most cruel death he could think of - roasting alive on a grill. That is why St. Lawrence's symbol in his pictures and statues is a gridiron. The story goes on to say that the deacon did not hesitate at one point in his torture to tell his executioners, “Let my body be turned; one side is broiled enough!”

The martyred deacon became one of the most revered of Roman saints. Prudentius, the Christian poet, attributed to his prayers the eventual conversion of pagan Rome. A handsome basilica - still standing - was erected over his tomb. Great church writers from all over spoke his praise: St. Augustine of Hippo, St. Ambrose of Milan, St. Gregory of Tours. Indeed, his name, inserted in the “Roman Canon” of the Mass (the First Eucharistic prayer) was invoked whenever the Mass was offered. Churches were dedicated to him throughout Christendom, and “Lawrence” has ever since been a popular baptismal name.

Persecution complex ?
2D8O2342

St.Paul is probably the best known case of persecution complex. It seems like he could not put pen to paper without reminding the receivers how much he had suffered, how many lashes he received, how long he had been in prison, how many times he had been shipwrecked, how horribly he was tortured... his fingers were probably itching to add how many times he'd been killed.

My question is, did he start a trend?

I see this in the Catholic church's focus on martyrs and martyrdom. If you see a Catholic procession with statuary, most of them show someone being tortured and mutilated in gory detail. Many of their saints are famous practically only for that. St. Sebastian stuck with arrows, St. Lawrence roasted on a spit.. others beheaded, bits cut off, fed to lions, etc.

Even today, here on Y!A, Christians are about the only group where people regularly come online to ask why are they soooo persecuted. There are other groups who might be forgiven for this, such as the Falun Gong in China, but what do Christians have to complain about so much?

What is it with Christians and wanting to portray themselves as persecuted?
Hey, fishy guy with no name. No, I'm not asking you to apologise. I'm merely trying to make sense of the fact that Christians constantly complain of being persecuted even when they're not.
Korban: yes, suffering is something that everyone experiences in life (and everyone tries to avoid, Christian or not). My point is that Christians seem to actually want to show the world that they are suffering, and actually exaggerating things. No offence, but it does remind me of a child with a finger held up in the air with some sticking plaster on it, wanting everyone to notice it.

Well, Christianity IS about pain and suffering.
You become a christian because of the promise they can spare you eternal pain and suffering through the temporary pain and suffering of their founder. In the past, if you would not join, they would cause you pain and suffering. In their quest to identify with their founder, a lot of christian mystics sought out pain and suffering. They even venerate martyrs famous for their pain and suffering.

I think it's just wallowing in the notion - a perverted masochism.
Blllaaahhhhh.

The tradition of visiting seven churches on Holy Thursday is an ancient practice, probably originating in Rome, where early pilgrims visited the seven pilgrim churches as penance. They are Saint John Lateran, Saint Peter, Saint Mary Major, Saint Paul-outside-the-Walls, Saint Lawrence Outside the Walls, Holy Cross-in-Jerusalem, and traditionally Saint Sebastian Outside the Walls. Pope John Paul II replaced St. Sebastian with the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Divine Love for the jubilee year of 2000.

We didn’t make it to 7 churches.  But 6 out of 7 is still a very good number considering our circumstances.  Back home, it’s fairly easy to visit 7 churches even if one’s doing it on foot because there’s a Catholic church in practically every street corner.  The Philippines, after all, is largely Catholic.
