Considering churches have bingo, raffles, night at the races, instants and casino bus trips, is it morality or fear of lost money that motivates their opposition?
But the Catholic Church isn't against gambling so long as it meets four conditions:
1. What is staked must belong to the gambler and be at his free disposal (you should not bet with someone else's money or with what your family needs to live).
2. There must be no unjust compulsion.
3. There must be no fraud or cheating.
4. It must not be grossly inequitable (an expert poker player should not clean out a complete novice).
So, no, I wouldn't say it's hypocritical. But see for yourself. Read what the Catholic Encyclopedia says about it: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/06375b.h tm
www.romereports.com The US Conference of Catholic Bishops has vast knowledge and experience combating sex abuse after it dealt with the abuse ...
Why are so many saying they want the US Conference of Catholic Bishops to write our immigration laws according to what their beliefs are with no other faiths allowed any input ? Why is the US Conference of Catholic Bishops the only way ?
I don't. These people would give this country away and empty it's depleted coffers completely, while retaining their own wealth. The catholic church cries out for help for folks in need, takes pennies from brainwashed folks that can't afford it and says it always needs more, while remaining possably the richest organization in the world. Self interest goes a long way when the people they will help will be mostly in their thrall one way or another.
U.S. Catholic bishops have long supported immigration reform that includes a pathway to citizenship for people who illegally live in this country. The bishops also want to promote faster family reunification. To convey that message to Congress, the bishops have organized a postcard campaign. They’ll urge parishioners to send a million-and-a-half pieces of mail to Capitol Hill and demand passage of an immigration bill.
Bishop John Wester, who heads the migration committee for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, says Barack Obama made immigration reform a priority during his presidential campaign. Bishop Wester says that despite high unemployment, the urgency surrounding immigration hasn’t changed.
"You know, I would ask the question, 'When is the perfect time? When are we ever going to have that window when everything is just perfect?' Well, it’s never going to happen."
The bishops may have a tough time selling legalization to their flocks. A December Zogby Poll indicates that two-thirds of Catholics polled support encouraging illegal immigrants to go home. Only one in four supports legalizing their status.

I find this interesting despite high unemployment, meaning Americans who are broke, cannot find any jobs, do not have any insurance, unemployment benefits have dried up at this point the Catholic Bishops, central concern is not about the people of America but they spend all their time and money for purposes not intended. If two-thirds of Catholics polled support encouraging illegal immigrants to go home. Only one in four supports legalizing their status, this would mean the church is losing more members than it is gaining and granting amnesty would fill the empty pews of the Catholic Church. If the Catholic Church had not abused the word of God and have paid out billions in scandals or hush money, these same Catholic Bishops, need to start asking for Catholic Church reform. All of this legalization to their flocks cost the taxpayers money and the Church benefits from it. I never seen any Catholic Bishops, addressing problems of Mexico openly and debating the Mexican Gov on just why are so many having to leave and why want you make changes, does not happen.
According to canon law, any Catholic public figure who uses his/her post to further abortion has incurred a latae sententiae (automatic) excommunication. Most US bishops do not enforce these excommunications.
In my opinion, if a politician wants to be "pro-choice", that's all well and good, but he has no buisiness proclaiming himself a Catholic while doing so. One does not get to pick and choose which parts of doctrine are correct and agreeable. Either you ARE a Catholic, or you are not.
Wouldn't it be fitting and just for the Archbishop of San Francisco to bar Nancy Pelosi from the sacraments of a Church she obviously only uses as a prop to gain votes? Plainly, she doesn't believe what she professes to believe.
enig: Incorrect. Catholic teaching regarding the death penalty has never been formalized. While a few popes have written against it in encyclicals, it has never been treated the same as abortion, which is the taking of an INNOCENT life.
fred: What about them? In what way has that got anything whatsoever to do with this? First of all, such a crime doesn't carry a latae sententiae excommunication. second, many of them were defrocked. Third, one cannot simply "un-ordain" a priest. Ordination imparts an eternal character upon the soul. He is ordained "a priest forever in the line of Melchizidek".
If you'd like to debate Church history or canon law, I'd love to, but don't talk about things you obviously do not understand.
crafty: As terrible as rape is, it doesn't take a human life. Abortion does.
i never thought of it this way. i think you are on to something. if the Church did this for politicians what about our brothers and sisters who drive to Mass every Sunday with Pro-Choice bumper stickers. can we throw them under the bus too? :) just kidding...
btw we are so blessed to have Justice Clarence Thomas apart of our parish in VA. live your beliefs. Nancy Pelosi vs Justice Clarence Thomas

Did this happen becasue the Republicans lost in such a bad way that the Congress has a Liberal majority?
Would this have happened if the Republicans remained in control?
Are the Catholic Bishpos jumping on the gay bandwagon?
The Catholic Bishops are not jumping on the gay bandwagon. The guidelines state that the gay parishoners cannot make known their sexual orientation or practice any kind of gay relationship.
This would have happened if the Republicans remained in control. These things will happen again and again until future generations ask "Why did your generation have such a problem with gay relationships".

From the US Conference of Catholic Bishops: - Susan Campbell ...
. Many people are affected when a priest abuses a minor, but the individual most impacted is the victim who has suffered a violation of trust that can affect his or her entire life. The abuser, the family of the abused, and the parish community are all affected by this sin and crime, but the primary person of concern must be the victim. . If people wish to volunteer for the church, for example, in a parish or school, they must follow diocesan guidelines on background checks, safe environment training, policies and procedures, and codes of conduct. No one, no matter who they are, has an automatic right to be around children or young people who are in the care of the church without proper screening and without following the rules. . Awareness that child sexual abuse exists and can exist anywhere is a start. It is then critical to build safety barriers around children and young people to keep them from harm. These barriers come in the form of protective guardians, codes of conduct, background evaluations, policies and procedures, and safety training programs.
US Catholic church moving faster on abuse cases | Washington Examiner
&Mdash; The action against the priest was swift and public.
Within five days of receiving a decades-old child sex abuse allegation against the Rev. Melvin Thompson, Denver's Roman Catholic Archdiocese investigated, alerted law enforcement and announced his suspension to parishioners and the public.
The archdiocese says Thompson, 74, maintains his innocence. Some parishioners have complained the process was unfair and too fast. However Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput called prompt action "painful but necessary."
The episode highlights the challenges American Catholic Church leaders face as they follow through on a promise to be more transparent in dealing with priests accused of abuse, while respecting the rights of both victims and the accused.
The case comes amid a worsening global clergy abuse scandal focused on how Pope Benedict XVI has dealt with problem priests in his past church roles.
