This is not to run Catholics down.

I asked a question earlier & one answer said the Catholic church is the true religion because it was the first Christian religion.
Does being the first or even the biggest automatically make the Roman Catholic's the true religion ?
There must be more to it than that.

The Bible itself foretold that there would be a great falling away or apostasy [2Thess 2:3] and it also foretold that the true knowledge would become abundant in the time of the end. - Daniel 12:4

What does that tell you? Doesn't that indicate that the first, oldest and biggest would most likely be the one filled with the results of that great apostasy? And when it said the true knowledge would become abundant during the time of the end doesn't that indicate that a smaller group would be formed that would be used by God and have his favor?

Broad and spacious is the road to destruction says Matthew 7:13,14. Does it not seem that one of the biggest would be the least likely to be found on the road that is narrow and cramped with few finding it?

Even if they were first, BEING FIRST DOES NOT MAKE THEM THE TRUE CHURCH if they were part of the great apostasy. In a way what actually happened is a parallel of what took place with the Jews. They were God's chosen people (equivalent of the true church) but they rejected Christ and they no longer are the true religion. The original Christian church did the same thing. They allowed pagan customs and beliefs to be mixed with the teachings of Christ and adulterated it and so while they were used by God down through the ages to some degree, he rejected them as the time of the end approached just as the Jewish people were rejected by him earlier, and true Christianity began to be restored.

Even the Catholic Encyclopedia says this:
"Various other signs are spoken of as preceding or ushering in the end, as a great apostasy (II Thess., ii, 3sqq.), or falling away from faith or charity (Luke xviii, 8; xvii, 26; Matt., xxiv, 12), the reign of Antichrist, and great social calamities and terrifying physical convulsions.”—Volume 5, page 533. So they recognize that this apostasy was foretold but either they don't recognize themselves as being part of it or they feel that through confession they can continue to be forgiven without having to make any changes. Sort of a once saved always saved self-righteous attitude. It didn't work for the Jews and it won't for any other "Christian" religions that are part of the great apostasy. The problem is not limited to Catholics.

Hi, i was just thinking about it today, and that i know nothing about it. I don't want people saying anything bad. My boyfriend of over a year is a catholic and i'm intrigued to know a little bit more just for my personal knowledge, as i don't know much about it at all. Any information is appreciated, and also if someone could explain why many people don't like catholics? As i've never understood that, but apparently people don't and i wanted to know why?

You want us to explain the faith to you and then tell you why people don't like us? That's a tall order toots.

However, I am going to give you the best advice for learning about us -- get the book "Catholicism for Dummies" (not that you are one) because it is the BEST over-all about our faith. Easy and entertaining to read plus it covers the most important theology, doctrine, and dogma of our faith.

Why do people not like us? There is many theories: taught bigotry from their churches is just one. Mainly I think it's fear and a lack of willingness to learn about us. We've been around 2000 years and were founded by Christ Himself. There is a LOT of misconception about our faith and practices -- just stick around here for a while and see for yourself.

I preferably call it the "Age of Ignorance". Why was the Roman Catholic Church so powerful during these times? What caused it to become this way all throughout Europe?

The Middle Ages are commonly dated from the fall of the Western Roman Empire (or by some scholars, before that) in the 5th century to the beginning of the Early Modern Period in the 16th century. In central Europe is was the only major Christian Church in existence that still exists today. This period was before the reformation so the only other major Christian Church was the Orthodox Church. Both of these Churches go back to the beginning. The Protestant reformation and the new theologies had not been invented yet.

The Catholic Church is the largest Christian church, representing over half of all Christians, and is the largest organised body of any world religion. Could it be that the Catholic Church is an unnecessary authority, created for power? [or something along those lines of thought]

Or could it just possibly be what it has always maintained itself to be,the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic church founded on St.Peter with Christ as the head!

its basic precepts? Did this solve the problem? What new problems did his successors face as a result of Henry's move?

He wanted to divorce and kill his wives which is against catholic law so he started the first protistant church and strted persicuting catholics cause he was kind of an a hole
