The nickname "Methodist" was applied to Charles Wesley at Oxford in 1729. It had been used in the previous century to describe medical men of a certain sort and, occasionally, in religion. Christ Church men koked about "the whimsical Mr Wesley, his preciseness and pious extravagances."
This is a fantastic sermon by Paul Washer. Although not a popular message, it sums up the problems I identify with the Church of today. The quot ...
Seems like feminist thought has crept into Christian thought in this brave new world in 2006. Any thoughts or comments?
Some of the more progressive churches are wanting to adopt more "inclusive" language in their liturgies and hymns. I know of several churches, more mainstream than you might expect, that have removed what they consider to be gender-biased language. For instance, I recently heard the phrase "Father/Mother God" uttered in a prayer by a minister. Also, many more churches are accepting women as religious leaders.
Can you please explain how their place of worship reflect the belief of Christians' religious tradition.
Pastor Billy says: the Real Presence of Jesus Christ is found in every Catholic Christian church. There is a tabernacle in every church in which the remaining consecrated hosts are held. The entire church building contains the symbols of worship, candles, incense, bells, stain glass imagery, decorated walls, music all of it reflects beauty of God's creation. I almost forgot, ancient liturgy in worship just like the first peoples of the book (Jews).
Some people answering are a bit confused, many Protestants are instructed to answer "the church is not a building" so sad because they miss out on so much. The buildings are our history as well. For example look to Judaism and the temple in Jerusalem. Christian history is found both in the physical and spiritual, the buildings are the physical stones of our faith as the members are the living stones.
Are the mainline Christian church teachings getting better or worse in your view? Please explain and state which church group you are discussing.
What is the best way to get Jesus Christ's True Teachings ?
Stated another way: If you are in your car suddenly falling 2000 ft or more off of a mountain road, would you state:
1. Church save me !
2. Bible save me !
3. Jesus save me !
4. other ----- !
Thank you for all sincere answers !
Peace and progress !
Lets see ... if churches were interested in teaching what Jesus taught then you could find a statement of beliefs or doctrinal creed that reads something like this:
* make God first, and focus on Him
* don't focus on what you make with your hands
* recognize the worthiness of your Creator and Heavenly Father to be worshiped by using His name in no cavalier way, but instead as a sweet blessing
* take 1 day in 7 as a day of rest from caring for yourself, just like God rested
* take special care to honor your parents
* don't slay one another
* don't take things that belong to others
* have truth in speech and attitude
* don't lust for what is not yours
* be poor in spirit
* mourn
* be meek
* hunger and thirst for righteousness
* be merciful
* have a pure in heart
* make peace
* have joy when treated badly
* be the salt and light of the earth
* be devoid of anger
* be prompt to reconciled to your brother
* hold nothing against another
* have a spirit of agreement
* turn the other cheek
* go the second mile
* love enemies
* pray for those that persecute you
But instead every church doctrine viewpoint THAT I HAVE EVER READ never contains a single one of those points ... NOT ONE.
Trust not in the harlot's teaching ... it leads away from the Lord Jesus Christ. Search it out for yourself with a Bible and a pen and prayer. That is my advice.
My understanding is that Mary's "Assumption" was not part of the Christian belief system until several hundred years after her death.
When was she officially declared a saint, in which century?
How did the Christian church decide that she was taken bodily into heaven?
Are there any Protestant religions that believe Mary ascended into heaven in the flesh?
The Christian church never determined this.
This legend is ascribed first to Semerimas, and survives in more well-known fashion as Venus, Diana, Astarte, Isis, Ishtar, etc... - all the mystery pagan religious had a female deity that was assumed up into heaven.
After 313 AD, when Constantine united the empire by blending Roman Paganism with Christian Iconography, many of these pagan practices died hard and were maintained by the subjects of the empire.
This "miracle" was transferred and attributed to Mary along with the Immaculate conception, etc... approximately 451 AD, close to the time of the council of Chalcedon. This kept the pagan mystery female deities alive and well under the new alias of "Mary." With so many other names, one more couldn't hurt!
They are all pagan doctrines, not Christian doctrines. The Catholic Church is the only denomination that ascribes to that particular form of paganism. The Eastern Orthodox church has some similar influences, but not quite as bad as the western church.
